Anna Nicole Smith, American
Anna Nicole Smith, 39, died today. She wasn't a TV star, exactly, though CNN describes her as that; by the time she made her reality TV series she was already disturbingly down the path of dissolution and collapse, and it made her show excruciating to watch even for somebody paid to watch excruciating TV. [Update: Biography Channel doesn't waste any time--they just announced a special for Saturday night.] She wasn't a supermodel, exactly, though she became famous as a Playboy Playmate and Guess jeans model. If I have to sum her up, she was an object, and an object lesson. She was somebody we spent a lot of time looking at, and then judging.
There was plenty that was tragic about Smith's life--tragic in the common sense of "sad": being entangled for over a decade in an ugly legal battle over the nine-figure estate of her late, octogenarian husband, her son dying just after the birth last year of her baby, and, of course, dying young herself and leaving her baby daughter in the midst of a paternity dispute.
But there was also plenty that was tragic in the classic sense of ambition, overreach and downfall. She made herself into Marilyn Monroe, right down to the collapse and early death--that will probably be a line in all her obituaries--but then Marilyn Monroe made herself into Marilyn Monroe. Judge it all you want, there is something essentially American about all the body sculpting and image-crafting. America is about new starts and self-invention, and the pilgrims and noble refugees don't have a monopoly on it. Smith was more self-made than most of us who call ourselves that.
Flame me, or flame her, if you want, but if Smith messed up her life, she did so through wanting the things that so many Americans want--fame, fortune, success, notoriety--wanting them worse and single-mindedly and clumsily and ultimately self-destructively. She was no role model, but she was America supersized and gone sour. And I don't feel like judging her for it.

I agree. It's sad on so many levels, I just don't feel like judging her about it. I'm not sure what she's famous for, but it just seems sad to die young after all she's been through -- and yes, most of it was of her own creation.

If most of it was her own creation, how can you not judge her?
-
4
Waaaaaah. Blame society. She brought it on herself.

I agree that Anna Nicole Smith is a lesson in gross, unrefined and uncensored lust for the American dream, as you say. Much like today's Paris Hilton, she sought any and all attention, be it good or bad, and whether she was a tragic figure or just the latest in a long line of self-destructive narcissists is entirely dependant upon your point of view. However, I don't think anyone will disagree that the greatest victims in this whole affair were her children. Imagine, for a moment, the life that faces this little girl now; was it worth it for Anna's last front cover headline?

Anna Nicole deserves some peace and quite. She is a mother who lost her son and was probably tortured by the thought that her actions contributed to his death. I think the media should show some compassion to her family and baby. I feel sorry for the baby who will never get to know her mother and will be entagled in a legal battle for along time. I think the paternity suit should be dismissed and they should respect her final wishes regarding who will raise her child. The paternity suit was pursued by a sperm doner not someone who really wanted to be part of the baby's life but by someone who wants publicity.

Well said. I admit to watching her show - as a guilty pleasure, and I also admit to feeling a bit of guilt today. Like a traffic accident waiting to happen, it was clear she was in trouble and yet the network, her handlers, and all of us kept watching it. What other outcome could there have been? (save a televised intervention only to be followed up with cameras at Betty Ford...)

Compassion !? Lets see why she died before we judge. She was a sick woman. That didn't even think of her own childern.Thier still fighting over who the father is. So where does the baby go from here. How sad !!

I am surprised at how sad this death is making me. I never cared for the way she was portrayed in the media nor was I a fan of some of her life choices. I do believe though that she has been controlled by so many, be it the courts, her exes, her lawyers, mentors, etc., that her choices may not have necessarily been hers altogether. I am suspicious of Howard K. Stern...I hope her death is fully and justly investigated. RIP Anna.

Live fast, die young and be the most beautiful corpse in the morgue! The making of an iconic figure is complete!Expect a slew of conspiracy theories to emerge out of this tragic event!
Isn't it that as the saying goes "life is what we make it"?Or in Anna's case it includes even her death?! -

Anna Nicole Smith!! Just the name brings sadness only because of the death of her son and now her.
Her daughter will only get to know her through stories from acquaintances and family. What a sad chapter. -

I hesitate to place Anna Nicole Smith in the same category as Marilyn Monroe, the latter being somewhat more iconic. Iconic because of the time she reigned and how she contructed her image. It was said of Marilyn she was far more intelligent, than the image she created, and that played a pivotal role in her unhappiness. Anna Nicole, I doubt, had any of that intelligence. She contructed a life in the limelight that she honestly could not handle and it killed her. I venture to say that once the cornoner's report is published it will become clear anti-depressants, alcohol and whatever else she put in her body was her demise. Her poor child will have to grow-up in this huge shadow. Here's hoping whoever raises her does so void of the limelight.

Yes, it is sad as their is a new baby that is without a mother. But how about this as a theory...as someone who seemed to be depressed and easily maniplulated, how about Howard Stern provided the pills for her son Daniel, claims to be Danylynn's father and then marries Nicole.
Now, Daniel is dead of an overdose and Nicole APPEARS to have committed suicide. Who's left to claim Nicole's inheritance (the in millions), from the estate of J. Howard Marshall II?
I guess that would be Howard Stern...how convenient?

I'm genuinely sorry to see anyone so young die such a sad and lonely death. Hopefully, God (if there is one) will unite her with her husband and son so that they can spend enternity together and that she can finally find the happiness she desired on earth.

What is ROFL?
Almost everyone was fascinated one way or another when it came to Anna Nicole Smith. She had that public persona in which she drew attention every where she went. She was papparazzi eye candy. Whether or not her life meant something is all upto perspective, but if was juicy enough, we wanted to know. Some would say she came from a life of deprivation, it was her right to seek all the things and blessings life has to offer. Yay Anna! Be happy with Danny in heaven! Maybe your broken heart couldn't sustain your pain and loss.
Now you know there is going to be an out right war between Howard and Larry. I just bet when the courts order Howard to present precious Dannielynn, he will present a different baby. Do the right thing Howard, for once is your selfesh life.

I think it's very sad that she never really had anyone around who cared for her. Instead of getting her help her so called friends just gave her more pills. The baby belongs with her real dad and if Howard isn't the biological dad I am sure the baby will be better off with the other guy even if Anna was still alive considering she was always on medication.

i think its very sad. but yes she had a lot of problems, but who doesnt. stay out of it and let the ones closest to her grieve.

I don't care what any one says, Anna Nicole was a beautiful, talented, and special lady. She was a lost soul. Sure, she was a little bit out there with her wild sexual rantings and her most obvious pill abuse, but this was her way of dealing with her issues. I believe she was just looking to be loved in her own way. And I also think that she put to much trust in the people around her and didn't really have any one in her life that she could turn to for help. I am mostly concerned with how she died. Am I the only one who is not suspicous of this seedy lawyer that she married? I know this sounds hard, but maybe he is responsible for both her and her sons deaths. I have always been known for my intuitions being right, and I have a strong feeling that he is behind some of her drug abuse and possibly even her death.

Would you really have the exact same opinion if she was still alive...
-

I know it was really wrong of her to do drugs and that is kinda what got her into this but i am also sad because she died at a mere 39. We all know that drdrugas are abviously bad, but common SHE DIED!!! I feel bad for her baby, no dad no mom no step-brother who is next?

In interviews since the birth of her baby and the death of her son, Anna Nicole has looked drugged and depressed. Her life is a study in sadness from her dysfunctional early days with her mother to the bad choices she made due to lack of education and foresight. Now another generation of this family will be raised in questionable circumstances...the tragedy continues. There is something very odd about the Howard Stern connection. Let's hope the Florida police investigate this with great care.
Did anyone really love and care about Anna?
