How I Met the Music Industry
I know I'm coming to the Grammys a bit late. What can I say? I'm battling to keep up with my sleepless, indefatigable TiVo like John Henry driving steel.
My colleague and time.com editor Josh Tyrangiel has already done a yeoman's job reviewing the performances. (Although I would add that, to get the full effect of the Corinne Baily Rae, John Legend and John Mayer performance, you really needed to be sitting down with a cranberry scone and mochaccino.) As TV, well, it was quite a cavalcade of music stars: Sting... Prince... Alyson Hannigan and Cobie Smulders?
I know that TV these days is all about using every part of the buffalo. And arguably the Grammys have a similar demographic to How I Met Your Mother, i.e., Gen Xers and Boomers who are not quite as young as they perceive themselves to be. But inserting your network's stars into an awards show as presenters is a little more organic at, say, the Emmys. Does the Robin Sparkles episode of Mother suddenly make Smulders a music star? (Hannigan barely even sang in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical.)
I just hope NBC hosts the Grammys someday. Scrantonicity would totally rock.
