Charles Gibson Discovers The Secret

ABC/ HEIDI GUTMAN
The argument behind the self-help concept The Secret--sorry, The Secret--is that if you want something, you can get it through force of will, determination and positive thinking. This may also be true of winning network-news ratings battles. In February, ABC won the first evening-news sweeps in 10 years over NBC, which--coincidentally or not--has just hired a new producer and sent Brian Williams to Iraq.
Also coincidentally or not, February just happened to be the month that the Oprah Winfrey Show--which leads in to local news in many major ABC markets--was flogging The Secret as if it were a brand-new set of lost Gospels.
It's an argument that gives ABC conniptions, naturally. The network will argue that no matter how strong or weak a lead-in, it's the strength of the news show that counts. Which may be, but it's hard to pinpoint just what was stronger, or weaker, or really in any way different, about ABC and NBC's newscasts last month.
Then again, I may not be the best person to judge. I'm not a big fan of the evening newscasts. I watch them only occasionally, out of professional duty, and while I think they do their job well enough, to me that job is pretty superfluous, and the differences between the newscasts too minor to matter. (The difference between the BBC news or the PBS News Hour and any of the network newscasts is ten times greater than the difference between any network newscast--even Katie Couric's--and another.) They deliver highly polished, bare-bones treatments of stories that you're already well familiar with if you've seen a newspaper, checked the news online or watched cable news over the course of the day. Yes, there's a set of viewers to whom the network news is still valuable. But the Grim Reaper claims more of them every day.
So I put the question to you: what makes you watch one network newscast over another? Is Charlie really that much more commanding than Brian? Is Brian that much more soothing? Is Katie that much more, um, Katie? Or is it all just about which channel Wheel of Fortune is on?
And yes, I realize that asking the question on the Internet is inherently flawed. Isn't part of the reason people still watch evening newscasts that they're afraid that, if they turn the computer on to get the news, they'll start a fire?

It's true that there are so many superior news sources out there, so the only reason to watch a national newscast is the level of comfort you feel with the anchor. There's the old cliche of "letting them into your living room", but it's true. I would have invited Peter Jennings to dinner any night of the week. Katie Couric? Not so much. She seems like the type who would hog the mashed potatoes and complain that we didn't have the right wine.

I am both outraged and in despair that thie
truly pitiful, warmed over, deceitful, scamming manipulative book and film, THE SECRET has been so flogged and blessed by so many in mainstream media. It has also been embraced by good, but disempowered people who are led to believe that
greed is a good thing and if gas and oil rates
go up, social services are cut out for the poor,
the rich get richer and the poor get poorer is
a matter of "drawing consciously or unconsciously
the LAW OF NEGATIVE ATTRACTION rather than the LAW OF POSITIVE attraction. Of course, despite
illness, poverty and natural disasters, all of us
need to learn from our mistakes and keep moving
forward. However, the Golden Rule and Conscience do not seem to be guidelines anymore to our culture or our businesses.
Slaves, minorities and economically exploited people all over the world have been told that the end of their suffering lies in positive "wishing, visualization, creating positive thoughts and then - maybe because of a one in a million lucky break with the lottery system, a free prize from all those selling products - as if they are gifts from the great creator, or a day or two free from pain means that these people have tuned into the "right universal frequency" regarding THE LAW OF ATTRACTIONS. There is an inference that if the exploitation and scamming of the most vulnerable continues, the the failure lies with them. Perhaps, the unconsciously called negative energy into themselves in a previous life, or didn't do work hard enough or were not determined enough to create positive thought, remain grateful and make a magical connection with the vibrations governing the universe. Meanwhile greed, warfare, scamming, public policies which
encourage debt (believing all people should know what "good" debt is and what "bad debt" is, policies which encourage over the top salaries and reduced taxation for the rich, exploitation of natural resources for the sake of "the free market" continue unimpeded. Why should I be horrified -- This sort of thing has gone on sense
the beginning of mankind but one would like to hope that the Golden Rule rather than gold would triumph in the end The Secret is no secret. The secret is that the truth is and always has been too uncomfortable to tolerate and is very inconventient for those who hold the reigns of worldly power. -

I am outraged that the book and film, THE SECRET has been blessed by so many in mainstream media, by the rich such as Oprah Winfrey and by good, but disempowered people. The guidelines for a good life set down by so many religions which include the Golden Rule and conscience have evaporated in our corporate run culture. There is an inference that those who are rich and powerful have simply tuned into the right vibrational frequency ordained by THE LAW OF ATRACTION. Meanwhile greed, warfare, scamming, public policies which encourage debt and self blame for the poor continue unimpeded. The Secret is no secret. The secret is that the truth is and always has been too uncomfortable to tolerate and too inconventient for those who hold the reigns of worldly power. The poor are led to believe that
they can not attain power through non-violent
political means so turn to an age old
non-secret -- the power of positive thinking and faith that if they do it right, they are in tune
with the wishes of the universe. But, if "success" does not come, they must take full responsibility for their failure. Please, for the sake of democracy, civil liberties, the Golden Rule and just plain common sense conscience have more anti "The Secret" activists to debate this issue in a little more
depth. -

OK, you forgot another factor. Charlie Gibson just started as World News Anchor. Before, it was a bunch of fill ins, like reporters for a few months (really boring), before that it was Elizibeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff, of course everyone knows what happened there, and then before that, you end up with ABC on top with Peter Jennings. So the lowest ratings were when they had no trusted name as their anchor. I really love Charlie. The actual news coverage isn't too different. It is the personality of the News Anchor. I love Charlie, he has this sort of comfort to him. I feel so safe listening to him. You get no sence of the voice of the writer online. People aren't afraid of computers. I am a teenanger. Teens don't get their news from websites. They get it from the TV (Network). It also takes to long to read an article. Just flip on the Tv and get everything you need to know in 30 seconds, vs. the frightning 10 page story online.
