American Idol Scorecard: Trapped in the Closet Edition

The final twelve contestants took the Big Stage last night, but the dramatic vocal performance of the night was a duet by Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell, as they continued their ongoing tango of homophobia, or -philia, I'm not quite sure which. During a sidebar on, of all things, Melinda Doolittle's shoes, Ryan sniped at Simon: "Stay out of my closet!" Simon: "Come out!"

It was a cry for help, though I'm not certain on whose part. Anyway, it was Diana Ross night, so here's a look at the performances of the other divas:

Brandon Rogers (You Can't Hurry Love): Brandon seems to be singing the Phil Collins Songbook, not the Diana Ross Songbook. And he forgets his words. YOU DO NOT FORGET YOUR WORDS! He tries to save himself with the classic "I had such a great time" defense: "I got caught up in it too much--I was enjoying it a little too much."

Melinda Doolittle (Home): Good choice for her to pick a dramatic song--from The Wiz--that allowed her to really belt it out. She still has too much smiley-itis, but she is learning to emote a little better. Paula actually breaks into tears, although maybe it's just the Coca-Cola talking.

Chris Sligh (Endless Love): Chris, sans glasses, says he changed the chord progression; Ms. Ross does not seem amused, and we can soon see why. He has apparently changed it into a Coldplay song. Now it's treacly and bombastic. Simon says he "murdered" the arrangement, but, maybe more damagingly, says he should have kept the glasses: "It's not you."

Gina Glocksen (Love Child): Diana advises her to "pronunciate" better in the pre-song coaching. She made a good pick--my favorite Supremes tune, it's probably the most rocker-friendly--but she doesn't quite have the vocal firepower to match the song or her ambitions.

Sanjaya Malakar (Ain't No Mountain High Enough): AI's Teflon King, his hair styled into soft ringlets, reminds us again that they should have kept his sister instead. Randy actually laughs at him: "That song was unlistenable for me."

Haley Scarnato (Missing You): Oh, right: she's still here. She misses notes. She forgets words. In a kiss of death, Paula tells her she looks lovely. On the bright side, Simon remembers her name this week and--he has a weak spot for the pretty ones--seems to be trying to throw her a lifeline.

Phil Stacy (I'm Gonna Make You Love Me): Phil's better at blasting a song than selling it: he has a big, big voice, but as before, his performance is a little shout-y and not very emotional. However, a big sign of his baby in the audience probably wins him an extra 500,000 votes.

LaKisha Jones (God Bless the Child): You knew she was going to kill this song before she stepped on stage; as Randy says, she did herself a favor by holding back and not oversinging, and unlike many AI singers, she delivered the song as if she actually knew what the lyrics meant.

Blake Lewis (You Keep Me Hanging On): Like Chris, he rearranged the song, setting it to a slower beat, thus walking in the hallowed footsteps of Vanilla Fudge. Unlike Chris, he doesn't ruin it, but he doesn't improve it either. Mainly, I find it really distracting wondering through the whole song when he's going to beatbox.

Stephanie Edwards (Love Hangover): I like Stephanie a lot--I don't buy the line that it's already a two-way contest between LaKisha and Melinda--but this is a weird song choice. The original is a breathy intro that leads into a climax without many lyrics. Breathy and subdued don't play on AI, so she blares out the sultry part and skips the climactic disco section altogether. Again, she sounds like Beyonce: singing "I don't want a cure for this," I keep expecting her to add "...for this jelly."

Chris Richardson (The Boss): This is a pretty unfamiliar song, but I think it's still clear that Simon was right: he was missing notes like a kid trying to pin a tail on a donkey. His charm and Justin-Timberlake-jack-in-the-box moves should keep him in another week, though.

Jordin Sparks (If We Hold on Together): Nice, if not too memorable. This ballad, we are told, was in The Land Before Time, which makes me picture her serenading a little orange Triceratops.

I'd send home Sanjaya, but who am I kidding? I predict this is the week Mr. Rogers leaves the neighborhood. You can't hurry love, Brandon, and you can't forestall elimination.

"Mr. Rodgers leaves the neighborhood" - good one!
    Thumbs up on your choice.

And I'll definitely put Ryan in the pot with the rest of the divas this season.

I agree with most of the appraisals of the performances, with one exception. I LOVED what Blake did with the song. He showed real creativity, originality, and effort in transforming that song. I thought that the judges went overboard into trying to criticize and homogenize this kid - he did something wonderful, interesting, and compelling - my husband and I were both really impressed, and agreed that Blake's performance was the most memorable of any American Idol performance we have ever watched, possibly second only to Fantasia's amazing "Summertime".

Jen C, I'll agree with you on creativity and effort. In theory, I want more contestants to do their own arrangement of songs, a la Chris last year, and I think one of the biggest mistakes Idol contestants make is to imitate rather than interpret songs. That said, I just found the end product kind of dull--but that's totally subjective. I hope he keeps doing it, though.

  • 4

I thought Blake's arrangement was interesting also, and at least he is showing some producing chops. If he does not win he probably will get plenty of offers to produce or arrange songs. That is where the bread and butter is.!!

  • 5

all the guys need to go, not a good one in the bunch. How did they get there.

  • 6

Oh I am sorry that was Sanjaya? I could have sworn it was his sister especially with those locks of curly hair and the two earings!!!!

  • 7

I agree with you about Melinda.
She still has too much smiley-itis yaaaaaa that true.
And regarding to paula comments, none of them are true.

  • 8

The judges have me confused at times. If a singer takes a well known song and changes it slightly to his style, he/she is told "you should sing this great song the way it was to begin with", if they do that then their remarks are, "you sound karoke, you have to stand out"! They have who they feel they will make the most money out of and trash anyone else that might be close. I think this year they would be happy with either LaKisha or Melinda....pretty obvious. By the way, I feel Chris Sligh has real potential.

  • 9

The biggest mistake Blake made was not using the brass and the strings enough in his arrangement. His idea was cool and points to what others should be doing more often, but it simply lacked some excitement/punch. That would have done it, IMHO. I find it really sad that there aren't any big voices in any of the guys. Why couldn't they find another Bo or Chris Daughtry? Someone who could match the girls' big guns.

  • 10

I agree, it's time for Brandon to change addresses! Sanjaya surely will be the next to depart, followed by Gina, Haley, Blake, Chris, the other Chris, Jordin, then Stephanie and Phil follows. Melinda and LaKisha will battle for the crown. Actullay, Melinda is wasting her time and should be signed to a lucrative contract TODAY. She doesn't really need the amature-circuit exposure of Idol but it won't hurt her.

i think you guys doing god job

  • 12

I Sanjaya is still in this competition because his entire family & their friends are backing him

  • 13

I'm hoping Sanjaya will be gone sooner than later, you know I really feel for him because, I think he is trying his hardest but, he just doesn't have what it takes. Melinda never ceases to amaze me, she is flawless, i have alot of love for her! You guys should check out http://www.jinglesforpringles.com/?market=1 I found out that you can win tickets to the American Idol Finale though Pringles, they are doing a contest where you upload your own original Jingle for Pringles. I'm thinking it could be alot of fun, i checked out the site and there weren't many videos there, so the chances of winning are actually pretty good. Some food for thought for you die hard Idol fans! I know about this because I work with Pringles!

In order to get SanJaya off the show you will also have to get rid of about 2 billion Indians. that's a lot of work. So we might as well start thinking about Sanjaya being the next American Iodl. There is no way in Hell that sanjaya would still be on the show if this wasn't true. I am glad I finally got this Thought off my chest.

  • 15

HEY TONI THERE IS NO RACIAL ISSUE HERE. SANJAY DESERVES IT THATS ALL. DONT BLAME ON INDIANS. YOU TRY THEN YOU WILL KNOW. IT DEPENDS ON VOTERS LIKE AND DISLIKE. DONT BLAME ON INDIANS. HOPE HE DID WELL TILL NOW. JIM

SanJaya is still on beacsue there is a website out there that has you vote for the worst performer. ALSO, Howard Stern is having his listeners vote for him as well.

    The website is
    http://www.votefor the worst.com

    Their intro page

Votefortheworst.com was started in 2004 to support voting for the entertaining contestants who the producers would hate to see win on American Idol.

    Why do we do it?

During the initial auditions, the producers of Idol only let certain people through. Many good people are turned away and many bad singers are kept around to see Simon, Paula, and Randy so that America will be entertained.

Now why do the producers do this? It's simple: American Idol is not about singing at all, it's about making good reality TV and enjoying the cheesy, guilty pleasure of watching bad singing. We agree that a fish out of water is entertaining, and we want to acknowledge this fact by encouraging people to make an even funnier show by helping the amusing antagonists stick around. VFTW sees keeping these contestants around as a golden opportunity to make a funnier show.

What an absolute waste of time is American Idol! Watching the various incarnations of "White Trash A Go Go," "Minority A Go Go," "Homo A Go Go," "No Talent A Go Go."

Where was the talent? Where is the talent? My God, when I was a student at Yale, our choir could and would blow everyone off stage! The only class? Diana Ross who still has the style, class, voice and most imortantly, the backbone to put herself out there for the world to see and hear! I admire, Diane, she is still working it!

    Continue to "Work Overtime"!

  • 19

Dianna sucked - she's still a diva but she stank! - Melinda and Lakisha blew her and EVERYONE away..

Oh and the homo stuff, that isn't PC ok? you should know better, if you're a Yale grad....ok?

  • 20

Wow, lots of interesting comments. I love Jordin, I think she is adorable and she has such a powerful voice. Lakeisha and Melinda ARE very good, but there is still a lot of show left and still time to turn things around. I was really rootin'for Gina, but I am sad to say she is falling behind.

As for the guys, does anyone else really miss guys like Chris Daughtry? I am so bored with the guys and wish there were more to get into. Even Ace and Bucky had people paying attention. I really enjoy this show, I just really hope it becomes more enjoyable.

what we did when we were in choir is nice, but it's a whole different ball game when it is just you up there. If you love to sing, then you can identify, if you don't then try to cut these kids some slack.

  • 21

Jordin is amazing. The more I hear & see her, the more I wish for her. She's so pretty & the sound & control in her voice - every week!

I'm glad Ryan isn't such a jerk like he was last season - he was really turning into an arogant/mean jerk.

  • 22

ACK! Whoever IS keeping Sanjaya on, will you please, please stop voting for him?! It's becoming painful to watch his performances. As James himself said (in his new Time.com column no less), he can't sing and he doesn't seem to care. Last night was surely MUCH more show over substance. I can understand why VFTW does its thing, but come on. Can y'all please put Sanjaya out of his and our misery?!?!

  • 23

Vote for the Worst is the reason why Sanjaya is still on. They actually think its funny. I vote for the best singer each time sometimes its the same as the week before other times its not. Sometimes I vote for someone I hate just because I thought they sang the best that night. But Sanjaya makes my ears bleed. Now Stephanie who can sing went home because of these people. Howard Stern is supporting Vote for the Worst and thinks its funny. We the voting public need to just stop voting if this is what's happening. Sanjaya can stay in this contest until the end if that group of followers has its way so I say lets just stop watching this nonsense and send a message to Paula, Randy and Simon which says you want to stick crappy singers in because its fun to make fun of them well we the American Public thinks this is horrible and we want no part of it.

  • 24

Guys remember there are 2 "big pictures" here...
1- The network gets big ratings, therefore big $$ with everybody tuning in to all the hoopla with Sanjaya.
2- The winner gets a contract with the music company...a sad waste of $ if Sanjaya goes all the way.

We've asked for this because we've accepted too much of this trash as "entertainment".Who cares what's "fair" anymore as long as we're entertained. In the meantime, our kids can't read and count - where's the outrage for that??!!?

  • 25

Well, don't stop watching! Sanjaya makes the show more interesting.I can't wait to see/hear him sing again:)
