Idolwatch: Where Is the Yo?
My weekly American Idol performance review has been bumped up from the blog to its own page at time.com, where it's getting the big, flashy, multimedia treatment. (Well, there are words and pictures. That's two media, right?) Check it out, then come back here and tell me why I'm an idiot. Consider yourself the fourth judge.
But enough about the singing: did anyone else catch Ryan's "grab the microphone" pantomime while Chris was on stage? This is a family show!
Oh, and I suppose I should make a prediction, though I'm loath to ruin my 100% record from last week. Your bottom three: Phil, Stephanie and Gina. Going home--though I hate to say it--I've got to go with Stephanie. Prove me wrong, America, prove me wrong!

That page is flashy, I dig it! I am hoping that America put out the call for Stephanie and she gets to saty at least one more week!

No tomatoes from me - you're pretty much right on as far as I'm concerned. But Gina MUST stay! At least for awhile - she is a breath of fresh air in the diva-laden bunch. She truly seems to WANT this opportunity so I hope she at least makes top 10 for the tour. (Did you notice how crushed she was to receive a negative nod from HER idol Simon?)
Yes, nice flashy page! Look forward to checking it out each week... -

Sanjaya is coming out!! All contestants need to beware. This young man has the personality, the class, and the showmanship to steal the show. He simply needs a little bit of coaching. As was evidenced by last night's show, he can steal the hearts of millions of little girls. His smile can light a room. He may sing softly, but at least there is no spitting and sputtering, no growling, a nice appearance, and he exhibits a desire to learn from those who so harshly critique him. He by himself or he and his sister would make a lovely duo for any recording company!

I think you were pretty much spot on in most of your comments and the page does "flash" in the positive sense of the word. I've no idea who will go when, but I think that for sure these five should stay in the running.
Blake Lewis
Lakisha Jones
Jordin Sparks
Chris Sligh
Melinda DoolittleI, too, think that Sanjaya might well be staying on just because he's young and beautiful, if not bold. He gets a "bold" point, however, in my opinion for coming out as he did tonight even though there's no way surely he could be the Idol or runner-up. Gina, Stephanie, and Phil may be staying even though I think that Gina fails as a rocker (never make in in the rockers competition) and Stephanie just does not have the ability to stay on pitch and pull off a consumate performance with consistency. Phil was not as much vanilla suck-up as usual. The excellent band and back-up singers could, of course, make anyone sound good on the right song. I'm not sure who the bottom 3 might be, but I think that Haley whose name I can never remember and Chris should be. Chris, in my opinion, has once more failed to pull off his Timberlake imitation.

I truly believe we are loosing site that this is a singing competition when we put Sanjaya even in the same categoty as LaKesha Jordin and Melinda. He may be a nice kid, but this is a singing competition and he really needs to go home.

Sanjaya absolutely stinks as a singer and should already be home watching Idol on TV with the rest of us no-talents. How he could still be there is beyond me......but then Taylor Hicks won last year, so go figure. I had McPheever all last season.

I'm new to AI and I find myself to be a loyal, yet frustrated viewer. Is this REALLY a singing competition? ACK! Whoever IS keeping Sanjaya on, will you please, please stop voting for him?! It's becoming painful to watch his performances. As James himself said (in his new Time.com column no less), he can't sing and he doesn't seem to care. Last night was surely MUCH more show over substance. I can understand why VFTW does its thing, but come on. Can y'all please help us out a little by putting Sanjaya out of his and our misery?!?! Please and thank you!

I don't know why everyone keeps busting on Sanjaya. They ask you to vote for who you like.If the American people like him then who cares. If the judges have a problem with that, then why don't they vote for the next American Idol. They put him through. You can see he feels funny when he doesn't get voted off.He knows he is not the best but the people are voting for him.I don't think Taylor Hicks was all that and he made it.I myself love Doolittle. But America votes.

Sanjaya needs to go home!! If not soon he will ruin the show and the season.

Sanjaya is mocking the whole show at this time and after this weeks performance he is playing the show just to see how long he can stay and and sound like crap
-
11
Sanjaya is definitely not a good singer. But at least he showed a bit of confidence and looked like he was having fun.
The little girl did not just cry for him. She was crying throughout the whole show. -

I can't be too hard on Sanjaya. He's a kid who caught a huge break. Gotta live up those 15 minutes any time you get them... and he's got enough forces behind him between VFTW and the substantial Indian-American community (seriously, I stumbled on that on by accident, but you can check the websites) to float through another couple of rounds before the bullpen distills a little more. And I don't think it's just a singing competition. Simon keeps saying it is, yet he makes disparaging comments about song choice (i.e. it's gooey, makes me want to jump off a bridge, etc.) even when it's a phenominal vocal. So it's about more than singing. It's about a Marketable Package. While the women have some powerful voices, the biggest moneymake I see (meaning the act with the most Top 40 Potential) is Blake. He's got a hook, he's got a personality that he's (so far) unwillling to stray from, and he's good. I think he's getting a contract no matter where he gets booted. But he's got a shot to go all the way.
