Idolwatch: Stefani's Eleven Ten
Reviews of last night's Idol performances are here. People who write "Discuss" in their blog posts are annoying, but--discuss.
Bottom line, it was a night of not-their-best perfs from the best singers (LaKisha, Blake, Melinda, etc.) and of fairly good outings by some not-the-best singers (Gina, Phil), so most of my reviews are somewhere in the meh middle. I blame society.
Anyway, have fun with--what? Who do I think is going home this week? Mmmmmyeah, I was kind of hoping you'd forget about that. For my bottom three, I'll say Haley, Phil and Sanjaya, though I'm not nearly as confident as the past couple weeks. Sanjaya's luck may have just run out last night--he didn't come close to his bizarre Kinks barn-burner, and America may finally feel they have permission to vote him off. Still, I'd be crazy to go against him and his legion of zombie speed-dialers.
I'm going with Haley instead: you can only survive so many weeks of "But you looked really pretty, though" comments from the judges.
[Update: Yes, I changed the headline; no, I can't count. After watching this much Idol, I'm lucky I still even know there are numbers above ten.]
[Update again: You'll probably notice that the reviews are still illustrated with pictures from last week's performance, which makes my totally ill-informed fashion critiques of, say, Jordin Sparks' outfit (I mean, just look at my author photo) even more puzzling. I'm told there's a holdup on Fox's end moving out pictures from last night, but I'm assured they'll be updated, in time for season 7 at the very latest.]

OMG PLEEEEEASE send Sanjaya home already. It's not really amusing anymore. Last night he had the look of an axe murderer in his eyes. And let's not even talk about the hair. I think he believes that his hype will win the competition for him, and that he doesn't have to do any work. I truly think the competition is damaging him.

IMO Sanjaya was giving us "permission" to let him go. He's made the tour, he's a happy camper.
Loved Gina last night - I think she is really giving her all to go for the big prize. (others I think are sometimes just looking for the exposure or just don't "want it" bad enough). This is important to her.
I'm slightly worried about Chris S. tonight - he just seemed off last night - very nervous almost, out of breath. Voted for you guy!
I'm going to throw caution to the wind and put Lakisha in the bottom three tonight - think she has lost some of her spark - she's becoming a yawn for me...am I crazy???
But yeah, I can say buhbye to Haley or Sanjaya pretty easily.

For anyone who thinks that Blake's rendition of "Love Song" was unique (like the judges) he used 311's version for the performance!!!..... HELLLOOOOOOO!!!!
Loved Gina and Phil's performances!
Anonymous.... you are not crazy, Lakisha seems to be doing the same type of songs.... She's good, she can sing, and yes, she's becoming a yawn....
Loved the hair Sanjaya.... but yes, you need to go.

I'm waiting to hear Melinda do something current. I'm reserving judgement on her until then. She's losing me with all these showtunes and oldies. Show me something current. I'm about 99% sure she can be trendy but until I hear it who knows for sure.

Yeah, I've found it strange that only about half the critics writing night-of or day-after things like this have made mention of the fact that this may have been the first time Blake WASN'T original. But with 311 being a bit of an obscure band in the "American Idol" set, I'm not stunned by it. That simple fact will actually probably gain him more favor because people think it was an original take on it.

I don't think it matters that much what Blake does, he still is the freshest contestant they have. He's the only one not throwing runs into every other note and/or imitating a pop star. I'm sure we can say he used someone else's rendition, but he sure as heck doesn't sound like 311 when he performs it. I'm for Blake because he is the most different, and I think he has the most performance ability. I'm excited to see him week in and week out. Referring to Simon's comments, he is much like Chris Doughtery, because I was all for Chris winning last year. He was different, fresh, could sing, and could perform.

Why is Sanjaya still on there? I guess much like Bush in the White House, it just shows us how stupid America as a whole is becoming.

Joseph,
Pardon me for sounding so crass, but guys like Chris who sing like they are straining really hard to take a crap is not good singing. I know it is a certain style of rock, but it isn't fresh. You can find thousands of Chris's at bars across the country. It ranks right up there with all the singers who think they have to whine every song in angst.

Loving this year like every other - - my favs - Chris R, Blake, Melinda and LaKisha - though the last two are starting to lose me . . . .
