Geraldo Makes Sense of It All for You

Geraldo Rivera, on Fox News' Your World with Neil Cavuto:

"You know, Neil, it is interesting. This kid is troubled in a way that's even deeper than the chip on his shoulder. In his creative-writing courses he wrote in ways that were filled with sadistic imagery and savage, violent images that the teacher, the professor, referred him to mandatory counseling. He's someone who's been stewing for an awful long time--he bought that gun five weeks ago. So this was not a spur-of-the-moment deal. This was a guy who had a beef with, an image of the world and an image of himself that he couldn't cope with. He didn't share it with anybody. And when his classes began and everyone in the class was asked to name, what's your name, what's your name, when the classes began, he'd refuse to give his name. When they asked on the written questionnaire, tell us a little bit about yourself, he signed his name, a question mark. So this is--and he's also, we find out now, on medication for depression. So what you have here, Neil, is one of those perfect storms, where you have a schmuck who hates himself and doesn't take it out first on himself but rather inflicts as much violence as he can before ultimately, you know, at least having the decency to take his own life. He should have started there with the suicide, put himself out of his misery, and spared the 32 innocent people for whom this community will grieve forever."

Um, noted.

sorry dude, but given that you wrote "Who Can Say What" in response to the Imus situation (not to mention Time making Imus some kind of victim of censorship in making your irrelevant musing the centerpiece of its Imus coverage) you aren't exactly in the best position to be criticizing Geraldo and Dr. Phil.

Not that don't deserve criticism.... they both said really stupid things.

But you are part of the same big problem --- people with a "microphone" who spout off without really understanding an issue -- or what is really relevant to an issue. Imus wasn't about censorship or "who can say what", and it sure as hell wasn't about rap music, or Al Sharpton, or anything else that you and your peers use to divert attention from the real issues.

Imus was about how corporations are completely comfortable with the kind of crap that Imus spewed on a regular basis until its no longer profitable for them. And Imus was about how your WHITE peers (and not you Black peers) think its okay to offer Imus "Insta-Redemption! (just add Hypocrisy!)" while at the same time thinking its okay to bring Jesse Jackson on the air to speak for the black community -- then accuse this chosen representative of hypocrisy by asking him about "Hymietown" remarks he made TWENTY FREE FREAKING YEARS AGO.

The simple fact that the VT tragedy became an immediate media circus ("Historic....the most campus deaths ever!") is what you should be writing about.... stuff like WHY Katie Couric is not merely going to VT to host the CBS Evening News tonight, but WHY this appalling but wholly private tragedy justifies the expansion of her show to an hour.

Dr. Phil and Geraldo would never get a chance to be idiots on air if the media wasn't treating the victims of this tragedy like a flock of vultures treats a freshly dead cow that has gotten separated from the herd. THAT is the story here....not the cheap shots you can take.

I like Geraldo better when he's playing himself on The Sopranos, or trying to find Al Capone's tomb.
