SUPER BREAKING OMG FLASHING RED SIREN! Rosie Leaving View
Last fall, Rosie O'Donnell stormed onto the set of The View like a hurricane making landfall, swelling the ratings and becoming a constant publicity machine for the show after taking over from Meredith Vieira. But storms don't blow forever, and at the top of this morning's edition of The View, Hurricane Rosie announced that she's leaving the show's panel of hosts in June. Which means Donald Trump needs to start lining up a replacement feud with Oprah, and fast.
Rosie's brief explanation was that it was just business: "I've decided that we couldn't come to terms with my deal with ABC," she said. "They wanted me three years, and I wanted one year"--which seems plausible enough, one year being about the time it would take to put together a solo talk show, get syndication clearances and launch in fall 2008. It's no shock; Rosie is daytime ratings gold, she has a lot of options (at one point she was reportedly in talks to spin off her Nip/Tuck character) and she'd have no reason to lock herself into three years of anything. (No replacement's been found yet, says Walters.)
I'm sure plenty of people were parsing her co-host's reactions. (Her conservative foil Elisabeth Hasselbeck was I'm sure just devastated, saying diplomatically, "You are such a catalyst.") But whatever controversies Rosie has had, her leaving can't be good for The View, and I'm sure Barbara Walters knows it. I've always thought there was something a little don't-throw-me-into-the-briar-patch about Walters' supposed discomfort with Rosie's loose-cannon statements. (Trump, Clay Aiken / Kelly Ripa, the "ching chong" controversy, American Idol's supposed "weightism," etc.) Walters always meant the show to be a hot-button forum, and Rosie's fingers danced over those buttons like a speed-typist's.
The View has always had to balance good outrageousness with bad outrageousness (two words: Star Jones), and whoever Rosie offended, she rescued a show that had seemed to be imploding. Better that The View get attention for her mouth than for Star's weight loss. As if acknowledging this, Rosie followed her announcement with another call for President Bush's impeachment, for old times' sake. Her co-hosts should enjoy it while it lasts, until Rosie takes her mouth and goes home.

HEH! Some of this name calling is rude and ridiculous. Rosie doesn't represent me or many of you. After you write junk, name call, and brush your teeth, go to church and tell God how nice you are.
p.s. I don't agree w/ Elizabeth often, but, she makes alot of good points, whether you are straight, with kids, or the opposite. Keep Elizabeth on the View. She countered Rosie well, w/o name calling. -

Good riddance to her!!!!!!!! She is a very selfish and outspoken person - I personally can't stand her. I think Barbara Walters is blessed having this happen. Why doesn't Barbara get someone like Oprah to replace this goofy.....

Rosie, is gone?!?! You mean, the same woman who says guns are bad (unless they are carried by her kid's bodyguard) is off The View!?!? The woman who lured Tom Selleck on her show then verbally assaulted his beliefs is no longer paid by ABC??!?Awesome!!!!
I'd say, "Don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out!" But that'd be nigh impossible.

"and I'll stop watching the view as long as Elizabeth is on it........."
Oh, so you don't like opposing viewpoints?
Hypocrite.

I seldom watched an episode of The View before Rosie got there, and I haven't missed an episode since she appeared. I won't watch after Rosie leaves. Simple reason - the show is too boring without her.
I don't always agree with her, but I LOVE that she celebrates our country's freedom of speech - which means the freedom to express personal opinions.
SMART PEOPLE are smart enough to handle strongly opinionated people like Rosie and Elizabeth. They appreciated diversity and don't take an elementary school attitude and call their antagonist - "Stupid." I wish our country could just grow up!

Ya know, I think that this was kind of an opportunity than Rosie had been waiting for. She has always been somewhat outspoken, but she never had the "soapbox." Sure she had her own daytime show, but I think that viewers EXPECTED certain things from her...and her political views were not in those expectations. Plus back then she was hiding herself in that big big closet (which myself and others were like, "if that girl aint a lesbian, then my gayDar is all off!"). The View gave her that chance to scream and rant all she pleased.

I, too, am glad to see Tokyo Rosie's big mouth gone. But I must admit, I love hearing religion bashed....it is man's worst, and silliest, invention.

Having Rosie was like a breath of fresh air. The regular news comentators never had the cahonies to tell the unvarnished truth. I just about died of happiness the day Rosie said that Bush needed to be impeached, and questioned why Gonzales wasn't in jail. Hiring Rosie was the best thing WAWA ever did.

34
I can't believe this many people watched that crap to begin with...it astounds me that anyone cares.
-
35
Rosie is good for only one thing. Making people angry. She vomits her propoganda without impunity nor reliable sources. It is good she is leaving. I dislike her so much I cannot even stand watching Sleepless in Seattle anymore. That is shame too, it was a great movie. So long blowhard.

36
I feel sorry for you people who are so nasty about her sexuality. Why does homosexuality scare you so--especially the men..hitting to close to home?
-
37
I am sorry Al, there are really more important issues in the world.
-
38
Who cares Zalisa? I could care less who she bangs. My problem with the Queen of Mean is she spouts propoganda and half truths and calls them facts. She is so blinded with hate and she sees only one side of the pressing issues facing our country today.

Now she can dedicate her time to the Million Mom, er... I mean 100,000 Mom March.
In 2004 it was only 1,000 moms. Maybe now Rosie can rally the other 999,000 since she'll have more time on her hands.

And we're back in Imus territory folks. (At least this development is related to actual TV, as opposed to Imus, who appeared on a rarely watched MSNBC morning show)
James, as one of your few regular posters, I must say: I love this column a lot more when it's talking about TV shows & plots/characters, rather than this. I understand it's your job (and certainly this is newsworthy), but all these posters appearing from nowhere are tiresome.
Now, any thoughts on Lost tonight? Get a critic's screening copy?

Chaddogg,
What can I say? There's a lot of TV on TV. As for Lost, they rarely send out advance copies, so I have to watch it like a regular civilian.
-
42
Oh well, I had to try...
As for replacements, would it make too much sense to lure Katie Couric over? I mean, CBS is probably looking to cut their losses at this point, she's got the Meredith Viera hard news reputation but is a proven winner with daytime audiences, and the announcement would surely spike viewership for the show in the same way as Rosie's did....
Any other options out there? Maybe Laura Bush after 2008? (Although you'd need to replace Elisabeth with someone liberal, I suppose)....anyone else?
-
43
What a shame. She gave a refreshing voice from the boring rhetoric on other programs.
-
44
I didn't always agree with Rosie's views, but I think that was the point of the show; to have differing perspectives on a myriad of subjects.
I respect those opinions that didn't like her, but find it oddly strange that they lampoon her for calling people names as they call her names. Can we say, hypocrisy...
Yes, Rosie tended to make everything anti-homosexual, which is wrong. But we all had the same choice to make -- turn the TV off and watch the Price is Right!
-
45
James, what wingnut blog linked to you?
What is most interesting is that Rosie haters betray their fear of open and honest discussion. Sure Rosie would say outrageous things -- and when she did she was criticized for them on air during the show. But the wingnuts despite the very idea of an outspoken progressive woman having a voice on TV. And Rosie reflected the views of the majority of Americans on the Bush administration---and talked about Bush the way REAL people talk.
So, Godspeed Rosie. You did a great job -- and you can know you did a great job because you sent the wingnuts into a lather

I won't be watching the View anymore after Rosie leaves! She was the only reason I tuned in. Before she came on, it was so boring. I think they got rid of her because she had the guts to say what most Americans are thinking and the conservatives couldn't handle it. Too bad this country has come to that. What a bunch of wimps! She will be greatly missed and I think your ratings are going to drop big time!!!

47
all the more reason to watch Ellen
-
48
Paul, that would be the wingnuts over at cnn.com, I think. (Just kidding, cnn.com! I love you! I love you and your sweet, sweet, addictive blog traffic! Please don't be angry!)

I only watched the View because of Rosie. It was a breathe of fresh air to see a celebrity speak honestly about anything, even if u didnt agree with her.
She was passionate and interesting and well read and diverse. I will follow her to the next endeavor.
Bye Bye The View

I only came here to say one thing. I didn't even read this trash article.
Why should anyone care? Think about it really hard what does this add/subtract or even change about our lives?
