Where You Lead, I Can No Longer Follow

Gilmore Girls is dead. The CW network announced the show's cancellation, after its May 15 finale, today. Variety has the news.

I feel a little sad and a little guilty, because I watched the show avidly for several seasons, then almost completely lost interest after Rory's first season or so at Yale. Was I wrong? Feel free to leave your reallyreallyreallyfast condolences here. But pace yourself. Network upfronts are the week after next, and I'm guessing this is not going to be the only goodbye we're going to need to say in the next several days.

This is hardly news. It was announced last year that this would be the last season. And this season's plot lines have definite "We're tying up loose ends" overtones. It is still hard to bear, though.

Bummer. The show was finally finding its feet again after a lackluster couple of years. I guess after the premature "let's kill Everwood and save 7th Heaven so we can kill that again this year," I was holding out just a wee bit of hope that the CW might be able to offer the shortened eighth season they've been dangling in front of our noses; the network doesn't have much in the way of drama left. But I guess they couldn't come to an agreement with the leading players. At least we'll always have reruns. Sigh.

On the upside, maybe this leaves room for Veronica Mars. Or maybe it's just that old wishful thinking again.

While I'll admit that I lasted a few years longer than you (I lasted until last season), I was ready to say good-bye. This season, it seemed like the psychological profiles of characters were re-written on a bi-weekly bases to suit the needs of the plot. And they a) made Lane disappear, and the b) lobotomized her. She needs a spin-off show.

This cancellation (especially given the wrangling ove the leads' contracts) makes sense. Now if they re-up "Smallville" and cancel "Supernatural," I will once again revert to believing that the execs at the CW share only the brain of a poodle between them (the "Everwood"/"7th Heaven" decision, anyone?).

James, you're not alone. This show died a bit when Rory slept with Dean, even though he was married (a very un-Rory-like thing to do). After that, characters made a lot of weird decisions thanks to the writers, who seemed to forget what the characters were supposed to be about.

Anyways, if there is a silver lining to this cloud, AlisonRose hit it on the head - now the CW MUST save Veronica Mars, which is quite simply on the top 3 list of best shows not enough people are watching (along with Friday Night Lights and 30 Rock, in no particular order).

I do wonder, though, if this means Lauren Graham will FINALLY get her deserved Emmy nod. Lorelai has been fantastic for a LONG time on this show...

I will miss GG. I think last season ASP knew she was on the outs and sabataged the characters to ensure the show couldn't last without her and her husband. The new writers this year butchered the show until about 4 episodes ago and they found a semi stride.....still nothing like the GG Glory days.....

Sorry, but I never saw it. A show with a name like "Gilmore Girls" sounded to "chick flicky" to generate and interest for me. I am probably safe to assume that there were no car chases or explosions in the show, correct?

If there were...then I mourn its passing and my missing it.

I'm just pissed they wasted the entire first half of the season on Christopher/Lorelia relationship.

The show was screwed up season six, but I held on hoping they'd fix it.

I want a do over for season seven.

@Karen: But it is news. No such announcement was made last year. In fact, up until essentially today, the CW had been negotiating with Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel to come back for an 8th season.

I have not seen an episode since this January because the show feels so flat. This is not a surprise, since the old writers left last year. Please! No spinoffs!

I, too, stopped watching the show after Rory went to Yale.

Unlike Buffy, GG never developed their characters or grew as a show. Some of the later years might be controversial but that's because Joss Whedon took creative risks and charted new territory for the show.

Buffy, the show and the character, kept growing and changing, getting more adult. GG pretty much stayed the same, year in and out.

But, the writing was usually good quality and for that alone the show will be missed.

Bottom line: This show, even at it's lowest points, was 10 times better than most broadcast programs. Writing, writing, writing.
    When will they learn?

I have been watching Gilmore Girls since the beginning. I will miss it. Sure they messed up last season and the first half of this one. Real life gets messed up too. Lorelia made a mistake and married Christopher. Life does not always make nice.

    Good riddance.

This was a great show, and it was finally getting good again. I will miss it! I just hope the finale really feels like a series finale...not a cliffhanger like the last few seasons.

As much as people complain about how this season's writers missed the mark on the characters (which they did - completely), I've always kind of blamed Amy Sherman-Palladino a little for leaving them such an awful storyline to start with. It's not a good show anymore, but it's not as if it's decline wasn't noticeable when she was still on the staff.
