Memorial Day Robo-Post: What Am I Doing This Summer?

And without those Fall series, maybe dig for content in classics -- shows in reruns, and how they are standing up to the modern era. Everything from Quantum Leap to Hollywood Squares. Maybe...

Maybe it would be encroaching on the Nerd World blog if you weighed in on TV hardware/tech -- TiVO, digital delivery, etc. Just an idea.

I would love to here about the DVDs you will watch this summer as well as the Fall screeners that you will be checking out.

I don't think that you watch many, if any, procedurals but "The Closer" starts up again in a couple of weeks and I think that this is a pretty good show. Also - I hear the the TBS comedies (My Boys, House of Payne) are supposed to be pretty good - what do you think if those shows?

Here's another vote for the fall pilot screeners, although I'd wait for a month or two... I might just be speaking for myself but I'm feeling a little OD's on big finales and the like the last few weeks... with The Sopranos finale still to come, I feel like I've nearing the end of a sunday brunch that I've already overindulged at. I need a little time to let the meal digest. If you know of any fall pilots that are the equivalent of Gas-X, start with those...

I'd like to see

1) more critical analysis of news and public affairs programming on the networks, as well as "cable news." (this would be especially good when some relatively irrelevant story comes to completely dominate broadcas news coverage.)

2) an analysis of why some "professional competion" (maybe even compare similar shows -- "Hells Kitchen" vs "Top Chef") reality shows work, and others don't.

3) A look at the phenomenon of the explosion of "mixed martial arts" shows on cable.

4) Big Brother

5) At least once a month, a long and obsequious paean to me and my unsurpassed wonderfulness.

Please don't do Big Brother. Unlike the first season, where no one knew what to do, so they just kind of hung around sharing about themselves and having fun, now all they seem to do is make deals and break them. BORING. By the second season, everyone had figured it out.

I would love Big Love and p_lukasiak's 1) and 2) sound really interesting.

But I'll be happy to read anything that floats your boat!

I got hooked on Big Love last summer. So coverage of that would be awesome.

Also, the two new HBO summer series, John From Cincy and FLight of the Conchords both look promising.

And of course, we could just spend the whole summer trying to make sense of the amazing Lost finale.

As much as I would love to see James witty take on Top Chef, the antics of the contestants last season really kind of ruined that whole show for me. (For those who didn't watch, one of the contestants pinned another chef to the ground and threatened to shave his head. And the other contestants laughed and thought this was HILARIOUS. WTF?)

I'd like to see....hmmm....how about an indepth examination of why ER just won't die. Or how about, predictions about the next big HBO tv series ala Sopranos? Or ways to improve the ratings on Law and Order?

Or...how about you just take a few weeks off and let Chaddog run the blog? ^_~ Just kidding! More JPTV!

"The Closer" and "Psych" are two of my favorite things about summer!

Definitely give some much-deserved attention to "The Closer." It has maintained an amazing level of quality during its first two seasons, and I expect great things from season 3 as well. Kyra Sedgwick rocks. Give the show all the column space you can.

Look at the new Entourage and Eureka (on SciFi Channel).

I'll vote for:
1) Continued discussion of Lost (seriously, I'm still trying to wrap my head around that finale)

2) Summer television shows - I know USA has done great things here (Dead Zone, 4400 - are they coming back? And of course Monk and Psych)

3) HBO's new series, particularly Flight of the Conchords

4) A feature called "If I Ran (fill in the network)" - basically, you look at their planned fall schedule, discuss what you think are weaknesses/strengths and what you would do to fix the network (plus, this offers plenty of chances for discussions, one network at a time)

As for taking over the blog, C. Brown, I believe it is already in James' very capable hands....I'm nowhere near as creative as he is in coming up with great ideas to discuss.

4) The cable story - what shows are doing well, what are not as networks take the summer off (must be nice!)

My first thought in response to your request was "Less HBO!". I don't have cable - if it's not on the ordinary networks, I don't much care. But as I prepared to type this in, I realized that it was partly your previous lauding of "The Shield" that had me add the first few seasons into my Netflix queue.

So more ordinary network stuff would be great.

I would be curious to see results of your random channel surfing - pick a network that you don't normally watch, give it a try, and let us know what you find that's suprisingly good or funny bad.

I fully concur with Chaddogg's #4: a more in depth view of the network lineups, your thoughts/corrections thereof, and predictions for who will have their entire new lineup canceled first. Following/leading from that, a discussion of how "TV" will be changing in the future with new technologies, etc.

Personally, I doubt my TV will turn away from FX for the duration of the summer, so I have little stake in which shows you cover on a weekly basis.

Ditto on doing posts on various networks and what makes them and/or their shows tick. Networks like History, All of the Discovery channels, National Geographic, TLC, etc.

LOST discussion item of the week.

One more idea: a weekly "Show/Genre of the Past" that we'd like to see return to television, since this sparked some great discussion a couple weeks ago.

Basically, each week, James could go to his impressive vault of past television shows (either cancelled before their time, had a short run, or else had a long run but then got cancelled), write a paean to their brilliance (all apologies to p_lukasiak for stealing that witty turn of phrase), and then suggest a reimagined version of the show today, along with a network that would do well with such a show, and suggested cast. Always a fun idea.

(For example, prior to 2004, someone smart might have written in such a post: it'd be great, given the success of Survivor, to have a show like Gilligan's Island but where the characters are in actual peril....maybe like Fantasy Island, only no fantasies, only nightmares! And we could learn about the characters thru flashbacks to their lives before they got stranded!)
