It's Four and Out for Battlestar Galactica
SCI FI Channel Photo: Carole Segal
File this under Can't Exactly Call it Surprising, but reports are out that Sci Fi will announce officially today that Battlestar Galactica's fourth season will be its last. After 22 more episodes, the fleet will come to a stop, one way or another.
Unlike the ending-date decision for Lost, this isn't exactly a case of commerce bowing to the needs of storytelling, though it is being spun as the producers' creative call: BSG's ratings dropped last season, apparently enough that the expensive series cost more than it was worth to Sci Fi. But I do believe Ron Moore and David Eick when they say that the show, like Lost, was meant to have "a beginning, a middle and finally an end," and having one 22-episode stretch in which to wrap things up could be a good thing. (With Earth in sight by the end of season 3, 22 episodes certainly seems like enough time, given how slack the middle of the last season was.)
If this is cancellation, it's a kinder, gentler one. In fact, I'm less worried for BSG--which has a chance to go out on top--than for Sci Fi. With BSG, it seemed to have a chance to break out of its mold of sheer-entertainment genre series and take a place alongside the FXes of cable, with series that paid as much attention to character, theme and larger meanings as they did to pure genre thrills. But it hasn't capitalized on that chance as well as it could have. The new Doctor Who is decent enough, Eureka too irritatingly quirky, Painkiller Jane turgid and embarrassingly written. What Sci Fi needed was a BSG companion piece like Bionic Woman promises to be, but that got snapped up by corporate big brother NBC.
Of course, that's from the standpoint of critical esteem, and as we know, that and 50 cents will get you half a dollar. I like my sci-fi, but I'm not obsessive about it, and maybe to fans who are more devoted to the genre than I am, sci-fi is sci-fi is sci-fi. Is there anything you'll keep watching on Sci Fi network once BSG fraks off?

No, there isn't. Especially since it looks like the Caprica spin-off has been shelved indefinitely.

I have to admit that I only watched the first season and then lost interest. I have however been a huge fan of Stargate SG1 which is ending its run this month. I was a devoted enough fan that I continued watching even after Richard Dean Anderson left and the show jumped the shark. Stargate Atlantis will continue on even though it is sub-standard to SG1, but watchable. I've read that a new Stargate franchise is in development, but don't know if that is true or not.
I know, I know, it isn't as dark, cerebral and edgy as BSG, but it is darn good fun and entertainment.

BSG is probably my single favorite TV show at the moment, it is amazing story with fascinating characters, deep themes and awesome effects. I will be REALLY sad for it to go off the air, but I am grateful that we do have one more season to look forward to. The only other thing I have ANY interest in watching is Eureka. I am not saying that there isn't anything else good on SciFi, just that there isn't anything on SciFi that I plan on watching other than those 2 shows.

Once Stargate SG-1 & BSG are done I'll likely be done tuning in on a regular basis to SciFi. I'll still occasionally watch Atlantis & probably Dresden Files, but nothing that will make me sit down and cue up the channel vs. surf by it just to check what's on.

If SciFi's typical fare were more like the excellent mini-series The Lost Room, SciFi would have a better chance of jumping to the next quality tier of cable networks.

Taken was excellent. They need to do more mini-series like that.

Sad. But better to know 22 episodes in advance than to have to wrap the show in one hasty episode (Gilmore Girls). Maybe a new sci-fi drama will appear to fill the void soon. "This has all happened before, and it will all happen again."

Definitely will miss BSG -- best thing on TV, although Lost is right up here as well -- but I also like The Dresden Files (has that been picked up yet?) and Eureka is fun in a USA-network kind of way. By the way, am I the only person who gets confused with SCIFI and USA? I know they are part of the NBC-Uni group, but sometimes you flip by one, and without the network bug it would be tough to tell which one you are watching. Tell me again why The 4400 is on USA?
I'd also like to see more miniseries, too... it's obvious the big nets have abandoned that chestnut. Too bad the last Harry Potter books are being shoehorned into two and a half hour-long movies. How cool would a 10-hour Order of the Phoenix mini-series be?

At least this time SciFi treated a show with a bit more respect than they did "Farscape" (promise two more seasons, and then pull the rug out from underneath the show after one, leaving everything hanging). After "Farscape" was dropped, I pretty much stopped watching SciFi until they introduced "Battlestar." Though for the record, I actually rather enjoy "Eureka." It may not win a Peabody, but it's intertaining.
It certainly does appear from the forwardness of this announcement, which gives the series plenty of time to wrap things up, that SciFi has learned from some of their past PR blunders.
Now if only they'd syndicate "The Invisible Man" or put it on DVD. I don't know who at SciFi has it in for that show, but I'd love to see it return to TV.

I have to say, I never watched SciFi until a friend got me hooked on BSG, and once it's off the air I doubt I'll be tuning in to anything else. Since BSG was so good, I tried watching a few others, but it seems like everything else is mediocre at best.
I am sort of glad it's ending after 4 seasons, though. They might well have been able to extend the storylines into more seasons, but I'd much rather go out on a high note and not be sitting around in 2010 tuning in to find out what the latest improbable crisis was that was keeping them from finding Earth.

For the love of god! No more filler episodes! Ack! The Woman King nearly killed me! I love seeing Helo shirtless as much as the next hot blooded female (or gay male) but that was horrendous.
Being a amateur writer myself, I find that if I'm back into a time frame corner myself, I lose a lot of the chaff and fluff and really focus on the important stuff. And really, BSG has a lot to focus on in the last season.
Who is the Final Fiver?
Where is Earth?
WHEN is Earth?
What the Frack Happened to Starbuck?
What do Laura's visions mean?
Can Gaius Baltar get any twitchier?
Who does Tricia Helfer's hair? That color is amazing!
Can the Cylons and the Rag Tag Fleet ever get along? So really, I think the writers have their work cut out for them. But I have great faith they'll get it done SINCE THEY'RE MAKING US WAIT UNTIL JANUARY!!!
^_^ I think we should have a BSG discussion thread too! Like Lost without Benry!

Some of the mini-series that they have done are good, so I'll check those out (can't wait to see how The Diamond Age turns out!)
If Sci-Fi got the rights and started making Firefly again, I would be glued to it. Joss Whedon's misunderstood vision of the future ranks up there with some of my favorite shows of all time.

Sad to see BSG go, but I'd rather it end in a satisfying way than die a slow, lingering death a la The X-Files.
As for SciFi, for now I'll still stick with Dr. Who (though that's not a SciFi original) and The Dresden Files, which actually improved as the season went on.
(And yes, I sometimes get USA and SciFi confused as well--LOL! The 4400 really should be on SciFi.)

I can't believe people are honestly talking about SG-1 as good Sci-Fi programming. That show's writing tanked years ago and has been getting worse ever since.
SG-1 JUST NEEDS TO END.
I say BSG is probably better off quitting while they're ahead. Lord knows there's a lot of rock bands who could've taken a page from that book.
But can Heroes really fill the shoes of Lost and BSG?
