Damages 2: Twice the Damage!
Has the Tuned In community embraced Damages? I had considered giving it Watch status this summer but last week's post drew an underwhelming response, so maybe the show doesn't merit it. Or maybe it's me.
Anyway, brief, mildly spoiler-y thoughts on episode 2, because it's been a while since I screened it. I was a bit skeptical about Ted Danson playing the villain (or the possible villain, or one of the villains...), but I was impressed with his performance, and with how they've written the character. Arthur Frobisher, it seems, is not so much evil as weak, vacillating on whether or not to make Katie "go away"--he wants to be offended at the suggestion, but he's not strong enough to stick with it; he wants to pull the trigger, but he's not strong enough to stick with that decision either. He seems like a plausible-deniability guy--a man who likes to ask, "Who will rid me of this turbulent priest?" and wait for others to magically disappear his problems.
As for Patty, this episode made her harder to nail down than the first, where Close ended in a state of pure Cruella DeVil-itude, tossing poor Saffron's doggie leash into the sea. She's still brutal, but she may just have the right motivations. I'm also interested to see how the storyline with her son plays out. I didn't have room to fit this in my column on women antiheroes, but I wonder if a show about a male high-stakes litigator would show him going over the family credit-card statements and handling child-care issues. (Vic Mackey on The Shield has to wrestle with getting care for his autistic child and so on, but he's not exactly at the pay grade where he can hire the problem out.) Yet the show also acknowledges Patty's status by having her husband offer to deal with their son, saying "Your plate is full"--although, as with everything on this show, there may be more going on there than it appears.
As for Ellen--she's still too much of a nonentity to me, but I do like how the show is continuing with the theme of her working-class background and how that affects her outlook. Oh, also: I haven't seen future episodes, but does anyone else think the apartment Patty set Ellen up in is bugged?

Yes, A TV Watch for Damages might be a good idea. I hope there are fans becuase this show, so far, is taut, exciting, scary and I believe Glenn Close is having a ball playing this woman. And Ted Danson, after doing comedy for more than 20 years, is just great playing a seedy man at the end of his rope. Caustic writing and beautiful cinematography are great. We need Ellen to become less of a lamb and hopefully get into a symbiotic relationship with Patty.

First time commenter!
I really enjoy Damages so far. Yes, it can be a bit cheesy and over the top, but there's nothing wrong with that.
I think Ellen for now has to be a blank slate, we have to wonder what has happened to her, the more blank slate she is, the more surprised we're going to be later.
And I'm really diggin' on Danson. He's so tortured! I love it. Rich tortured people are fun.

Another vote for Damages watch. Close is an absolute pleasure to watch, and the plot seems to have a lot of potential -- and I loved the Saffron's collar moment at the end...but wasn't she really doing Mitt Romney

James,
I apologize for hijacking the thread, but have you screened any of the "Masters of Science Fiction" that ABC will be showing in August? Any thoughts?

5
@keith: Haven't yet. It's first on my list, after all the other stuff that's first on my list.
-
6
Ah, you have one of those lists too. I came across Schwartz's review of it on your sister site CNN. Just wondered what your take was.

After two episodes, Damages is falling into the Dirt/Nip Tuck category of FX dramas that I'll watch once in a while, instead of the Rescue Me/The Shield/The Riches group that I watched obsessively. Close is excellent, of course, and Zeljko Ivanek is always welcome. I'm just not really into the suspense thriller plots. Maybe I've been watching too much John from Cincinnati, but I'm starting to think plot is overrated. At least when most TV stories' sole purpose is to toy with the viewers and make them tune in for next week's shocking twist!

Love "Damages" would love a watch! I downloaded the pilot episode and watched it on my iPod at work yesterday (on my lunch...) and I watched the 2nd episode when I got home from work - I TiVo'd that! I am pretty much hooked!

I, too, think a Damages watch is a must. The show is great - excellent writing - great performances, especially from Ted Danson - who would have thought that and Glenn Close is as brilliant as always. This is a must watch program for me.

I like Damages and will continue to watch it, but let's be honest: it wouldn't be worth is if it wasn't for Glenn Close! The only other actor on the show that can match her is (surprisngly) Ted Danson.
I'm wondering if we're supposed to find Ellen and her perfect boyfriend irritating, because just as I'm about to yell, "shut up!" and the screen they flash forward to her covered in blood and I think, ok, I want to see how she gets there...
...oh, and the apartment is DEFINITELY bugged.

I've enjoyed it so far--almost seems more like a movie than a TV show. That said, I'm wondering how they could do a second season.
Re the other FX shows, Rescue Me is really losing me this season. The same old angst, over and over. And the whole thing about not having named the baby yet is ridiculous. We're supposed to believe this Irish family with lots of death in its history hasn't had the baby baptized (I don't practice anymore, but I'm pretty sure the Church generally requires a baby to have a name at baptism)?
Also, I haven't seen this week's episode, but Franco's girlfriend's reaction last week to his "proposal" was pretty unbelievable, too. He vomits repeatedly and then pulls out the ring, and she just completely dismisses the puking? Ah, romance.
And then there's the chief's suicide.
Finally, Tommy just seems like more and more of a selfish p***k. I really liked this show the first couple seasons, but I think it's gone downhill steadily. I would think that's just to be expected, but The Shield has kept things going for more seasons.

I'm really enjoying this show a lot. They mystery is great, but I find myself really intrigued by the characters as well. No one is who they appear to be or, at least, that's the way it feels.
It will be interesting to see if they can keep the intensity up for the entire season. I'm all for a TV Watch.

While I might be biased, my husband is a camera operator on Damages, the show is excellent and it is just getting started. Glenn Close, Ted Danson and Zeljko Ivanek bring something new to primetime TV and I appreciate everyone giving it a chance. Contrary to what you could be thinking, I do not know what's going to happen at the end of the season, my husband never tells me, but I think none of us will be disappointed!! Thanks for watching!!!

I found Damages implausible, heavy-handed and derivitive. It had predictable plot-points and is by far Glen Close's worst work... sad to say because she's my favorite actress.

So far, so good. Amazing, really. Great television, from script to performances to cinematography. Glenn Close is absolutely captivating, and Danson is a nice surprise. I really hope that the show catches on with more fans so that we are treated to more than one season.
