Vacation Robo-Post: What Looks Good to You?

The surest sign that we're into the You Are the Critic era is that the networks, which used to hold on to their fall pilots like the plans for the A-bomb, now give them out in dribs and drabs, or in their entirety, well before the new season starts. They show them on airplanes; they stream them online; they give out DVDs; they "preview" them so extensively in trailers that you may as well have seen the entire pilot.

Part of this is simply wanting to build buzz; part of it may be an acknowledgment that people are probably out there BitTorrenting the pilots anyway. Also, there may be a strategic reason: especially for special-effects-heavy shows, the expensive pilots generally look much cooler than the regular weekly episodes. (Which, usually, critics will see shortly before they review.)

Ironically, some of the new season shows I look forward to the most are the ones I haven't seen: Kid Nation (CBS sent a trailer), Nashville (Fox has sent nothing so far) and Swingtown (CBS is airing it midseason and held onto the pilot). Beyond that, as you've read in my Test Pilot posts this summer, I'm especially anticipating Reaper, Aliens in America, Pushing Daisies and Gossip Girl, with a few other shows on the could-be-good list.

But at this point I bet a lot of you have seen parts or all of as many shows as I have. What's on your watch list?

No Robo Mad Mans? You let us down, JP. Is this just a JOB to you?

  • 2

Well it won't be the reality show Anchorwoman on Fox. I just read a story that said it was pulled after the first installment. I can't believe as many people that did watch it tuned in. It was on my "must not watch" list.

  • 3

These are pilots I have seen
    Pushing Daisies
    Aliens in America

Pilots I haven't seen but want to watch
    Gossip Girl
    Viva Laughlin(sp)

    I think thats about it.
I really liked the pilot for Pushing Daisies and it's definitely a show thats on my must watch list.
I'm looking forward to Gossip Girl only because Josh Schwartz is associated with it.

So far: just Chuck (the pilot was hilarious) and Pushing Daisies. Bionic Woman could be interesting too.

  • 5

    I haven't seen any fall pilots yet....and I don't think I will.

I'm the kind of kid that didn't want any hints as to what they were getting on Christmas morning, because I always liked being surprised. Same goes with TV shows - I want to judge the pilots on their final, on-air performance.

That being said, I WILL be tuning in to see Pushing Daisies and Kville (or is it Ktown? Whatever, the Anthony Anderson show set in New Orleans), I may give Reaper and Gossip Girl a chance (damn you CW for pulling me back in after cancelling Veronica Mars), and will probably give Private Practice a chance (although I'm THIS close to removing Grey's Anatomy from the Tivo list after last season's complete dud, especially now that it airs the same time as CSI AND The Office.)

Agree with Chaddogg - I will probably give Reaper and Gossip Girl a chance, even though I am still holding a major Veronica Mars grudge against the CW. They did that show wrong, IMHO. How is it that the CW has one of the most promising line-ups of new shows this fall? Pushing Daisies (ABC, right?) looks interesting, but good lord if my TV viewing schedule isn't really jam-packed already. I will probably give it at least one episode, based on what I read about the pilot. . . . I am NOT a Grey's Anatomy fan, but I think Piz from VMars is in Private Practice so I will probably watch one episode of that too. Well, maybe not. I don't know. Schitzo moment. I can't wait for my other shows to start back up.

I have viewed the pilot for K-Ville and I enjoyed it. I will be adding it to my TiVo this season. I am so looking forward to Pushing Daisies, Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, Chuck, Bionic Woman, Life, and Gossip Girl.

I have deleted my season pass for Grey's and I will not be watching Private Practice even though it features both Piz and Taye Diggs - I have to pass.

Wow, how did I forget Bionic Woman? Definitely checking that out. And probably "Life", just because it has the guy from Band of Brothers in it, and looks vaguely like a "House"-esque cop show.

@shara - I think CW's lineup is so promising because they HAD to put on new shows....lots of lost programming there, and when you're a network struggling for ratings, you'll always be trying new shows. Plus, they have to take risks to get more respect - although you can debate how big of a risk they're taking when they're relying on so much reality TV drivel (not to insult reality TV in general, but rather CW's choices in the genre, aside from America's Next Top Model, which I'm told is good).

May I recommend a topic to robo-James (in case he's checking in?) How about a thread on what we're getting RID of on our TiVo lineups next season....I think there is a surprisingly large anti-Grey's Anatomy contingency out there.

What, no ones falling all over themselves to watch The Sarah Connor Chronicles? Seriously though, I would have expected SOMEONE to want to watch it (I doubt I will).

I'll probably watch Reaper and Aliens in America and that's it for my new additions to the DVR. Myabe Pushing Daisies.

Truth is, there's too much entertainment available and not enough hours in the day between school and work. My only bonus is that my girlfriend enjoys mostly the same things I do.

  • 10

Sarah Conner as in The Terminator? Never heard of it. What network has it?

  • 11

Given that I doubt all of the following will survive through November, in decreasing interest:
    Pushing Daisies
    Reaper
    K-Ville

I'm also giving two/three weeks to decide on:
    Journeyman
    Cane
    Chuck

I continue to get the feeling that all the sci-fi shows will cannibalize each other's audience and all that will be left standing by January 1st is ABC's schedule (along with possibly NBC's monday night shows due to the Heroes anchor). The DVD sets of all those canceled shows will sell like hotcakes though in 2008.

@Keith - Sarah Connors Chronicles (yes, as in the Terminator) is a midseason show for FOX. It looks pretty promising too, as a premise (fits into the increased sci-fi focus of TV, thanks to Lost, Heroes, Battlestar, and new entries Pushing Daisies (more fantasy than sci-fi, but still) and Bionic Woman).

There was a large influx of Sci-Fi shows two seasons ago as well when Invasion, Threshold, and Surface all came out and washed out by the end of the season. Invasion and Surface were fantastic and I liked the characters on Threshold although the plot kinda blew. Invasion was MARVELOUS although incredibly slow.

I don't think sci-fi is quite becoming main stream in this country though.

I do have one question, how come we don't have adult animated telivision akin to Japanese Anime? I find plotlines in Anime to generally outstrip anything you'll find on American Television and due to the short runs (26 episodes is generally max) the stories never plod along with meaningless information like you find in certain episodes of Lost or will find in Heroes as they start to reach for ideas. Note: I don't blame creaters and writers for this but networks who attempt to milk every penny out of a show... see- 24.

I find animated television most intriguing though because of what you can do on a far smaller budget (better action scenes, better locations, larger casts).

    Anyway, I like Anime =P.

    @Karma,

Funny, I felt the reverse. I was really into Threshold and thought Surface blew. I was shocked that Threshold was cancelled mid-season and Surface actually made it to the end of the season with a real question of whether it might make a second season. While I realize it was a TV show, it just stretched reality a bit too far. You can not take and old storage tank of some sort, weld a window on it and sink it to the bottom of the ocean and then resurface using an inflatable life raft. It would have been crushed like a tin can halfway down. To add to that, the main characters seemed to be poorly ad-libing their action sequences. Surface just really blew.....bad. Threshold was by far the superior show. I can't comment on Invasion as I didn't watch it.

I'm looking forward to Private Practice - I think it could actually outdo Grey's, because I think moving out of the hospital may get rid of some of the melodrama Grey's overdoes. (However, I will probably still be keeping Grey's on my DVR, although The Office will get viewing priority.)

Pushing Daisies looks interesting, and I'm thinking there's one other sitcom I've been wanting to see, too, although it's escaping me at the moment. Otherwise, not many others have really piqued my interest, but that could change as I continue to see more commercials over the next few weeks.

Off-topic, but I wanted to share this week's bumper crop of "what they said / what the captioner typed" on "Mad Men":

    ice floe / ice flow
    caviar blinis / caviar Balinese
    kibbutzes / kibitzes
tropical boudoir red / tropical bourdois red
Ethel Rosenberg pink / Ethel Rosenburg pink
ministry of propaganda / administrative propaganda
    Stonington, Connecticut / Stoneyton, Connecticut
not the soulless bulls**t / not the soloist bulls**t
paint some flats / paint some flags
    Nikita Khrushchev / Nikita Kruschev

and at one point, the captioner just gave up:
    L'chaim / (speaking Jewish)

There was also a reference to what might have been Lower Marion which came out as Lower Mareine, but if I couldn't be sure, no blame to our friend. Also no demerit for "Uraum" as the name of the Israeli fellow, even though it was spelled Yoram in the end credits. And I don't know what "afraid you'll miss 531" might be, unless it's a reference to missing the 5:31 train to the suburbs.

I've seen the pilots for Pushing Daisies and Reaper so far. I enjoyed both, but I LOVED Pushing Daisies.

I'm also looking forward to Chuck, Dirty Sexy Money, and Eli Stone (the latter being a midseason show from ABC).

  • 18

Like Chaddogg, I haven't seen any of the pilots and I won't until they air. Last year, I made a resolution to watch at least the pilots of all of the (scripted) network shows instead of deciding which ones to watch before getting a taste. That worked out well, so I'm going to repeat it this year. Because I'm going to see them all anyway, I don't feel a particular desire to pre-watch any of them, especially since I'd like to see the final version of the pilot.

I've also been restricting my information about the new shows because I want to be as unbiased as possible going into it, but I've of course heard good things about Reaper, Pushing Daisies, and Aliens in America.

I'm actually dreading watching some of the pilots and hoping they're not as bad as I've heard, like Cavemen (based on my like of the commercials, I was really hoping this would be good, but it seems as if it's not only really bad but also offensive) and Big Shots ("men are the new women"? *cringe*).

And then there is The Big Bang Theory, which I'm considering excusing myself from watching. As Maureen Ryan put it, "Are you kidding me with this nonsense?"

  • 19

@jon88: I'm behind on my viewing of Mad Men, but it's good to know that I shouldn't expect the captioning to get better. "Speaking Jewish"?! Hilarious.

Even more off-topic: a test to confirm that strikethrough does not work in comments.

Karma - i too am upset about Invasion and i agree with you that unfortunately SciFi still hasn't got a mainstream audience.

I've seen Bionic Woman and even though the pilot was so, so - i'll still watch it. Hopefully the finished pilot will be much better.

These i haven't seen (but am looking forward to):

Gossip Girl - the clips i've seen - this looks fantastic!! :)

    Dirty Sexy Money

Forgot to mention Moonlight - i haven't seen any clips or the pilot. But my love for Jason Dorhing holds no bounds...
