Which iPod Now? What Should iDo?
So a few weeks ago, my iPod--my ancient, pre-video iPod--broke. Stared making clicky sounds and showed that picture of an iPod with cartoon X's for eyes that is the most adorable way imaginable of telling you that you need to buy a new piece of electronic equipment.
I decided to hold off buying a new one, because the iPhone had come out, and I assumed that Apple would soon release a new iPod with a touch screen and widescreen video. Sure enough it would. And has. Behold the iPod Touch, now at apple.com--widescreen video, wifi, Safari, all those goodies. I could replace my iPod, and watch iTunes TV episodes on the subway in style.
Problem solved, right? Wrong. First, the Touch maxes out at 16GB--not enough to hold my iTunes collection plus video. The problem is, I use my iPod as a stereo component, keeping it hooked to the stereo at home, so I've gotten used to keeping all my music on it. Second, today Apple also announced the iPod Classic: 80 or 160GB of storage, but a small, old-fashioned 2.5-inch screen and no WiFi.
So what do I do now? Choose audio over video and get the Classic? Choose video over audio with the Touch and figure out a workaround for my music? (Maybe an Airport Express to stream iTunes from my computer to the stereo?)
Or do I now need to get... both?
Damn you, Steve Jobs! Damn youuuuuu...!
[Update: My colleague Leverus drops some nerdology on the subject over at his blog.]

Go audio.
Regardless of which one you get the screen will still be ridiculously small, if you're watching it on an i-pod you're obviously not watching for the cinematic experience anyway. Might as well go audio and maximize your enjoyment. -

Agreed with carlosthedwarf. While you may be able to "watch" while sitting on the train, what about walking from the train to the office, back, and then the train to your place? All that walking time is probably near to the "sitting" time on the subway, yet since you need to see where you're going, you won't be watching then.
Audio is the way to go. I can't really imagine needing a video iPod at all....which is weird, given my love of many different TV shows

Good points all. The complicating factor is, is rarely take my iPod walking anyway. (I use my Shuffle for that, and for running.) So it's really mostly a stereo component, expect when I bring it in the car. But if I had a video iPod, maybe that would change. And I'd never need to read a book again!
Still, I wonder: are there any Tuned In readers who use the iPod for video? Or are you more big-screen purists? Would be interesting to cross-poll the Tuned In and Nerd World readership on that one.

Just this past weekend, Keith Jr. begged me to take him to the local skate park. Keith Sr. works for a living and enjoys relaxing in the evening. The skate park does not really appeal to him in the slightest. Yet. Keith Sr. lives merely to satisfy the wants, needs and desires of Keith Jr. Keith Sr. struck a bargain with Keith Jr. Download a movie to your iPod so I have something to do for a couple of hours in the dark. It was simply amazing to sit on a park bench and watch a movie on such a small device. Go video, you'll find uses for it......like riding on the train.
Trust me, the older you get, the less important the music will become. But movies, they last a lifetime.

@Keith: If only an iPod lasted a lifetime! But I don't want to die that soon.

Sounds like storage is your greatest concern, and you're at home more than you're on the subway. I'd go for the classic.

You do realize that you don't have to KEEP video on the iPod. But you already knew that. Just load it when you want to watch something and remove it to make more room for music the rest of the time. Multi-taskers are always better than a uni-tasker. But you already knew that if you watch Alton Brown on Good Eats on Food Network. That man loves him some multi-taskers in his kitchen.

As a very satisfied iPhone user, I'd recommend busting the budget and getting the iTouch *and* the larger Classic. And don't make any decisions about the video until you have seen the screen -- it's fantastic, and amazingly sharp. Everyone I've shown the phone to has commented how it would be great for watching something on a plane, subway, etc. Of course, it's no substitute for a regular TV... but it's not intended to be.
Right now I have about three hours worth of TV shows and one full-length movie (the 95 minute long What's Up Doc) on my 8GB iPhone... along with about 30 albums... and I still have 1.5 GB free.
It's a snap to rip just about any movie you have on DVD to the iPhone using HandBrake... a great, free little program; that's what I did with "Doc" to determine how much space it would take up (it eats up about 1.2GB).
So break the bank -- I mean, these banner ads on the sidebar gotta bring in something! And can't you write off part of the cost seeing as it's for your job?
And maybe if you wait a couple of months, Jobs will cut the price by a third... but I wouldn't hold my breath.
