Actually, I agree that TNG is superior overall to TOS, but their selection wouldn't fit with your "begat" criteria.

Captain Picard as The Borg should have become a mini-series in which The Federation would have had to make a choice between killing the Captain or letting The Borg destroy The Federation. The carnage that The Borg would have caused would have been so cool.
