HBO Tells Tell Me You Love Me It Loves It

Doug Hyun / HBO
File this under News I Didn't Expect to Be Reading This Soon and Come to Think of It Probably Ever: The Hollywood Reporter says that HBO has renewed Tell Me You Love Me for a second season. Having watched the entire season, I'm delighted; having read the mixed critical reception and seen the ratings, I'm stunned. According to the Reporter, it's averaged 910,000 viewers, actually surprisingly high to me since that's not far from where it debuted. (Also approved: pilots for a biker drama from The Rapture's Michael Tolkin, which intrigues me, and for a medical drama from Robert Zemeckis, which, we'll see.)
Why the confidence? As long as HBO is sticking by the relationship drama--beautifully acted and finely observed, if uneven--I'm not asking questions. The Deadwood and John from Cincinnati fans may commence throwing blunt objects, however.

Has HBO lost its fastball? I have no desire to see "Tell Me You Love Me" or anything else currently on HBO outside of "Curb." "The Wire" doesn't start until next year. And the prospects of watching a biker or medical drama doesn't really trip my trigger either. But I am a Weeds/Brotherhood/Dexter fanatic. I never thought I'd be more excited about watching Showtime's series than HBO's.

You know, I do kinda miss "John from Cincinnati." Not that the show amounted to a hill of beans. But it was our hill, and these were our beans.

You have officially just made my week, James.

Wow, 910,000 viewers. Maybe every one of them threatened to stop their HBO subscription? What percentage of HBO owners is that anyway?

Here's the problem TMYLM faces in the future. If they keep the same roster of couples, the show will have to invent more obstacles for them to suffer through. Eventually (soon), the audience will get very tired of these dimwits who can't get a grip on their lives. All this perpetual anger is so contrived, unless the couples are really supposed to have the emotional maturity of high-schoolers.
The alternative would be to introduce new therapy patients, which squanders the goodwill and familiarity.

WOW. This is shocking news. Then again, it looks like a cheaper show to produce and HBO can't cancel every new show after one season. I thought that the medical drama was from J.J. Abrams. Maybe there is more than one.

Great news! Do you know anything about what kind of budget the show has, James? I would think it easier for HBO to support a simple show like this, than expensive epics like Rome or Deadwood.

I know the wild west sets and costumes and horses on deadwood were expensive and all, but all together they've got to cost less than the top shelf prosthetic genitalia needed to create Tell Me You Love Me.

this show is unlike any show i have ever watched. it touches on emotion and needs that most couples don't want to think about. bravo to hbo for going in a different direction.

I am highly surprised that people feel HBO has gone adrift with this show. I think what HBO has always done well is make great shows about the human spirit and connection between friends and loved ones. Why is the relationship dynamic between these couples any different than the ones in six feet under and sex and the city? Any fan of those show will tell you that they cried at the end of both series because of the pure emotion and love between the characters. Are we just to scarred to watch something honest on TV these days?

Never seen it, never heard of it, not interested. More low-cost TV reality shows where the lowest energy possible reigns supreme? Boring and dumb. JFC is still fresh in my mind ... I wish they had the balls to put that back on. Great writing and acting, great show, truly fresh and worth my time.

I agree with debbi! This show is unlike anything I've seen on tv in a long time and actually realate to different pieces of the couples. It's interesting to watch how someone else deals with something you've dealt with long ago. This show is amazing and if you don't like it...change the channel!

I really like the show and after reading all the previous comments, you guys just sound like a bunch of negative jack-asses. This show is actually pretty cool and interesting to watch and see these characters relationships unfold. Try to be a little open-minded...you might just seek positive therapy after watching it.

John from Cincinnati SUCKS!!! What are you talking about?

This show is actually worse than Dane Cook's Tourgasm (something I didn't think was possible).
The show is poorly written and these characters are loathsome, self-absorbed, narcissists who have no respect for themselves or for others around them. They don't reflect any of the people I know and grew up with and they don't reflect American culture today. I hate these people. I truly do.
If I see that Jamie character put her shoes/boots on furniture again, I'm going to throw something at the television set. I watch it just to see how bad this train wreck gets.
Showtime is far better than HBO right now. Weeds/Dexter/Californication/The Tudors are all excellent, thoughtful, entertaining, well-written shows. It's sad to see the network that brought us the Sopranos, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under, Deadwood and Rome fall to such depths.
At least Big Love is worth watching.

This is sad. What a waste of time. I don't buy any of the couples relationships and the characters are all boring or poorly cast. HBO keeping this while dropping the likes of John and Deadwood show their time has come and gone. I'll stick to Showtime. TMYLM won't last to a 3rd season.

Don't forget Carnivale. I would have liked to see a couple more seasons of that show. IMHO, HBO has been officially castrated.
