Your TiVo Hates the New Fall Season

addison_tivo_web.jpg
Addison is #18. But is there a bullet? RICHARD CARTWRIGHT / ABC

It's pretty fascinating, the little tidbits of info about viewing patterns that TiVo is able to accumulate, if you can get past the creepy, a box-in-my-living-room-is-reporting-back-to-corporate-HQ aspect of it. For instance: after a summer full of hype and advance screenings for new shows, only two fall debuts are in the list of top 50 most common TiVo Season Passes: Private Practice (#18) and Bionic Woman (#43).

That's the bad news. The good news is that your TiVo hated last fall season even more. Only one new show made the top 50 then. (Studio 60. You can delete that Season Pass now.) New shows--like Heroes, which started at #85 and eventually rose to #6--take a while to make it into the pantheon. And the top 10 this season is little changed from last year; Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives were #1 and #2 then and now. The full top-10 rundown:

1 Grey's Anatomy
2 Desperate Housewives
3 House
4 Lost
5 CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
6 Heroes
7 American Idol
8 24
9 The Office
10 CSI: Miami

Three top 10 spots go to American Idol, Lost and 24, which don't return until midseason. In other words, my TiVo wants to know what happened to Jack and Kate off the island, and wishes it were February already. Much like its owner does, except for the weather.

Those of you with DVRs--now that we're a couple weeks into the season, what new shows have you given a Season Pass to so far? And have you cancelled any already?

    Monday:
    Chuck

    Tuesday:
    Reaper

    Wednesday:
    Bionic Woman
    Dirty Sexy Money
    Gossip Girl
    Life
    Pushing Daisies

    Thursday:
    Nothing

    Friday:
    Moonlight

So these are the new shows that have earned season passes on my TiVo. Moonlight is a guilty pleasure pure and simple and I will keep the pass as long as the show survives (not very long I assume).

I am holding onto Reaper, Pushing Daisies, and Gossip Girl (of the new shows). Already abandoned Dirty Sexy Money (couldn't even make it all the way through the pilot), and Bionic Woman (without even watching the pilot, Wednesdays are just too crammed).

My TiVo loves (or, at least, is willing to see again for future dates) the following new shows: Pushing Daisies (actually, that one is full-on, unabashed love), Chuck, and Life (which evidently is pretty polarizing).

TiVo went on a date with Bionic Woman, but hated it's morose tone. That slot may be given over to Private Practice out of sheer boredom, at least until Lost returns at 8 pm central.

I don't mind that Tivo monitors my viewing habits. I just wish that such reportage would be included in the Nielson totals so My Vote Would Count.

  • 5

The only new shows I'm continuing to watch are 'Life' and 'Pushing Daisies'

  • 6

@Samson: Actually, a big change that's going on this season is Nielsen's reporting of "plus seven" (i.e., over the course of the whole week) ratings. I'll post about it sometime, if I can stay awake through it.

    Keepers: Chuck, Reaper, Journeyman

Not sold on(yet): Cane, Pushing Daisies, Bionic Woman

    Life Support: K-Ville, Life

  • 8

Keeping Chuck, Journeyman, Heroes and Pushing Daisies

Life & Bionic Woman: jury is out.

Your mention of Tivo reminds me: One factor sharply curtailing my sampling of new shows, especially of the serialized-drama variety, has been the fact that many networks no longer put their shows on iTunes. It used to be, if I missed an episode, I'd download it and watch it later. (Or, if a show built some buzz over the course of a season -- as "Friday Night Lights" did last year -- I'd catch up on what I missed by downloading the series from episode 1.) But I missed last night's "Dirty Sexy Money" thanks to its being scheduled opposite "Top Chef"'s live finale, and with no other way to view it -- I'm a Mac user, so watching it on ABC.com is out of the question -- I'll probably just let the show drop.

Chuck and Reaper are the only new shows I'm watching. I may start watching House though which for me would be a new Show.

  • 11

New season passes for me: Chuck, Reaper, Journeyman, Dirty Sexy Money.

My Tivo redeemed itself last night. I had, half way through Top Chef, realized I forgot to set up Pushing Daisies to tape. I wasn't too upset since I gravitate toward the Internet when I miss a show, but I was disappointed. After TC I checked out my recommendations to see what Scrubs reruns I had and there it was: Pushing Daises. Tivo, you really know me.

  • 12

    Keeping: Reaper, Pushing Daisies

On the fence: Chuck, Dirty Sexy Money

    Killed: Private Practice

  • 13

Sorry for the double post. My computer was jealous I was speaking so highly of my Tivo.

  • 14

    Monday: Chuck, Heroes, Journeyman

Tuesday: NCIS, Reaper, Law & Order SVU

Wednesday: Bionic Woman (have only seen the pilot so far), Dirty Sexy Money, Gossip Girl (not quite sure yet), Pushing Daisies (haven't watched yet), Kid Nation

Thursday: Ugly Betty, The Office, CSI

    Friday: nothing

Took Numb3rs, Big Bang Theory, Back to You, Moonlight off the DVR schedule so far. I'm sure there will be more after watching another episode or two. Looking forward to Project Runway starting, and then Lost of course...also, know anything about Medium coming back?

  • 15

    @karin: Medium midseason, I believe.

  • 16

    @TKC -

I can watch ABC.com on my Mac...is mine special in some way?

  • 17

    New shows:
    Keeping Bionic Woman (for now)
On the fence: Reaper, Dirty Sexy Money, Journeyman, Pushing Daisies
Dropped Tell Me You Love Me, Moonlight

Still enjoying (returning) Heroes!, Office, Earl, Lost (waiting anxiously).

  • 18

Old Shows: Lost, NCIS, Survivor, How I Met Your Mother, Gray's Anatomy (Ugh)
New Shows: Back to You, Private Practice (New Ugh)

Shame HIMYM and Lost are on different networks. The "Wait for it..." would be more endurable with Barney touting upcoming Lost episodes...

Journeyman killed Horatio Cane on my Tivo. My cones and rods had just healed from all the orange-burn from last season. On the other hand, I am going to miss seeing Mr. Caruso stand with one leg on the hood of his Hummer, the other one planted firmly behind him, bowing his head and mumbling something witty while the camera pans around him from a chopper.

  • 20

My *imaginary* Tivo likes it some Chuck, Reaper (though I didn't like the second ep. as much as the pilot), and Pushing Daisies. It also enjoys stuff like The Office, Survivor, Heroes, and anxiously awaits Lost and Jericho's returns!

    You know, imaginarily.

  • 21

Tivo and i are in love with Chuck. That got moved up to the top 10.

We haven't watched Pushing Daisies or Bionic Woman yet, so that will have to wait.

But we've already broken up with Back to You and Journeyman.

  • 22

What about Mad Men? Compare it to any of these shows and they look pretty boring. I give it three spots on my top ten list. And it's almost over-- oh no!

  • 23

@ TKC and idigress: There was a time when ABC.com did not allow Macs to view their video, but we have been able to for about a year.

  • 24

3 DVRs--2 HD, 1 analog. Sampled practically everything new, and so far, not a single keeper on broadcast TV this season.

As for cable (actually, satellite), Tell Me You Love Me, Mad Men, Californication, new Dexter, new Brotherhood, latest Weeds, latest Sarah Silverman, latest Curb Your Enthusiasm all have passes and all are beloved.

But before you think I'm a cable elitest--I also record almost all of Thursday evening: Earl, 30 Rock, Office, ER (so sue me), CSI, Grey's and Without a Trace. And of course, can't wait--CAN'T WAIT--for Friday Night Lights coming back tonight.

Seriously, does anyone think anything new on broadcast TV this year can compare to any of this?

Brian (So much hard drive space, so little to watch.)

"Chuck", "Journeyman" are the only new ones. "House", "Monk", and "Psych" remain.

We love "Don't Forget the Lyrics" FAR above "Singing Bee."

We added "Back to You" and have deleted it.

I had great hopes for "Bionic Woman" but it's too dark for our family.
