The Morning After: Another Shot?

RICHARD CARTWRIGHT / ABC

If anyone watched a second week of Big Shots, reports are welcome, because I can't bring myself to go near it again. Otherwise, general Thursday-night discussion welcome. Ugly Betty? CSI? The game where they hit the baseball with the baseball stick?

Ugly Betty was in good form, I thought. What is the deal with Amanda - is that actress pregnant? She looks like she had pregnant-face, and they just aren't showing her from the neck down hardly at all. I loved the standoff on the roof, with the graveyard of mannequin dolls. Willie's later meltdown (on said roof) was hilarious. I just know that Betty isn't going to kiss Henry, she'll pull the whole "you're just drunk and the baby might be yours so don't jump into anything while you're in this frame of mind". Hilda seems to have bounced back nicely, I thought that last week we weren't seeing enough of Justin grieving, but that was probably just a storytelling device so they could surprise us with the Santos twist at the end. The scene with Justin and Mark there at the end of Justin's first day of his Mode internship was really well-done - both those actors are really good in their roles.

    Ugh. The Cubs looked terrible.

That being said, I'm a Cubs fan, and irrational optimism is my default emotional point of view....three in a row, baby!

Ah, Chaddogg--you make me sad for Old Me. I've really been holding myself back after the heartbreak of 2003. I don't know if I'll ever recover--I'm watching the games (and watched a lot of the regular season) but am having a hard time generating any enthusiasm. Call it self-defense.

Maybe a little offense will help.

Oh, James, lighten up about Big Shots. It's funny, and I found it engaging, and, at times, hilarious and even a little touching. To be honest, I found the self-consciously cute writing of Pushing Daisies harder to take (if I'd heard the words,"pie-maker" one more time, I'd have thrown a pie at the TV, and the girl's description of a hug as someone putting their arms around you and a "big, wet wad of happiness (or something) comes out of your mouth" is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard come out of ANYONE'S mouth on TV --and that's saying a lot).
Back to Big Shots -- Christopher Titus and Dylan McDermott work well off each other; Michael Vartan and Nia Long have a great chemistry that I hope the show doesn't exploit too soon; and Joshua Malina, Jessica Collins and Amy Sloan are a lovely, neurotic threesome. All in all, I'll keep watching this one over poor, old ER and predictable Without A Trace.
