Heroes Watch: Kiss of Death
SPOILER ALERT: Before you read this post, open the hilt of the samurai sword I've placed in your desk drawer. Boy, was it hard getting that thing past security!

So, Nikki Reed's loss was Missy Peregrym's gain was Candice Wilmer's loss. Peregrym (the original illusionist-villainess Candice on Heroes) was cast over the summer to replace Reed on Reaper, leaving a gap in the Candice department. Not the worst of casting problems, you'd think, since the character was by definition able to make herself look like anyone. (Note to actresses: avoid roles like this. Zero contract-negotiation leverage.)
But Candice lasted all of one episode in her re-shifted form, killed by the still-alive Sylar (a "surprise" NBC blew weeks ago in the promos) in a vain attempt to steal her power. This after not only saving his life but offering him a twins fantasy! The ingrate!
All in all, an episode full of kisses and foreboding. Peter, having proved his worth to the Fake Irish in the robbery of one of those sports books they're so fond of in fake Ireland, kissed Little Miss Fake Ireland as we watched the tattoo briefly shift into the shape of the Squiggly Thingy of Death. Claire, meanwhile, was swept literally off her feet by Flyboy, who smooched her before revealing that he had once been captured, and marked on the neck, by a man who answers to the description of HRG. Which kiss was later echoed in the painting, predicting HRG's violent death, that Isaac left behind after his death. (He just keeps churning out posthumous work. Dude's the Tupac of the psychic art world.)
A lot of balls in the air here--I counted seven storylines treated in this episode, and I may have missed one--and while we can complain about the show having re-dispersed the heroes for no discernable reason, what's done is done. At this point, I'm going to try to suspend judgment until we have a better sense of how these balls are going to collide and carom off one another.
But it's as good a time as any to poll you on the various plot threads: which ones do you care about? Which ones can you do without? And does adding Nichelle Nichols to the Nikki/Micah storyline redeem that one for you? I don't know, but seeing as how the Star Trek franchise is getting Zachary Quinto, it seems like more than a fair trade.

I don't think Candice is actually dead, could it be an illusion? That ending sent a chill down my spine though, HRG dying would be sad... very, very sad. Wouldn't it be an amazing twist if HE was in fact the person that Molly Walker is so afraid of... oooh... spooky.
Anyway, last nights episoded excited me considerably more than the previous 2. Let's hope for 15 more good ones.

@Karma:
It's a good theory about Candice, although I hope not, only because a show can do only so many fake deaths before it loses all sense of urgency. The argument in favor of Canddice actuallly being dead is that she seemed to show her real (i.e., overweight) form, which she never has, though that could be a necessary ruse to convince Sylar. And it would explain why he was not able to take her power.
I'm still banking on dead for now, though.

Have we ever proven that Candice could ever see her own illusions? It could explains Sylar's apparent lack of power.
Weird twist possibility of the day, The Nightmare man is the undead mind of Mohinder's father (his dreams from Season 1 must have come from somewhere?)
As far as Chuck goes, I have to give the show credit for not falling into the trap of being a gadget-fest of technobabble and overused nerd tropes (like a lame Star trek episode). Instad the "missions" tend to be more a MacGuffin for actual character devlopement. It's a little bit like The Office, but with more death, explosions and kung-fu fighting.

Someone at some other place noticed (i did not) that when Maya and her brother got into the car of that person they met in Jail he was driving a Nissan Rogue that looked suspiciously like the one that Claire had stolen. I think her flying friend works for the company and is trying to turn Claire against her father... dun, dun, dun.
Also, as we learned from last season. The paintings do not always come true. I think it's going to be a bit trite however if they keep discovering these lost paintings. I do think it's slightly realistic at the moment though because he did just recently die and knew it was going to happen so was probably working hard to figure out what would happen next.

Speaking as an artist, I have more boxes filled with old sketchpads, doodles, illustrations and negatives than I know what to do with. It is entirely possible that Isaac did as well. Plot wise it may seem contrived to you but it would be very familiar to any artist.
True, many of his earliest sketches would have to do with his comic strip or whatnot but the show has already proven a.) the comic strip was presentient(so clearly he had been unknowningly predicting the future) and b.) you must interpret Isaac's paintings correctly in order to guess the future. Kind of like Nostradamus. You can make the pictures tell whatever story you like.
I can see Isaac's paintings being useful for the first half of the season but after that, I'd imagine it will be "Isaac who?"

Yeah, what I ment really was that as a plot device it would be tedious if everything revolved around the pictures again.
I disagree though about the Nostradamus thing, at least in this case, because the pictures are supposed to be in order. That one last night was 8 of 8 and the with Taiko dead was 1 of 8, so what happaned to the other ones?

Loved Heroes last night. Loved it!!! Loved watching Parkman and Mohinder bicker like an old married couple. They're so cute!
Not crazy about West, still. Dude seems wicked sketch. And did he not see Claire's dad when he almost hit her with the car back on the first day of school? Guess not (or did he? Maybe his whole focus on Claire is BECAUSE he recognized her dad. Hmm, paranoid much?) But maybe he will turn out to be OK once he learns a little more about how things have been going down. Other angry heroes have gone after HRG and are now working with him, so maybe Claire and HRG can recruit the kid in their resistance movement. Good grief, I don't want HRG to die, he is the best actor on the whole show, and one of my favorite characters. Maybe that will be the future they thwart at the end of this season.
I never had a problem with the Nikki/Micah storyline - I like both of them and really wanted to better understand what the heck was up with Nikki/Jessica. Plus she's way hot. Glad they're back. I also don't have a problem with the Wonder Twins storyline, and REALLY HOPE that they will delve more into the 'twins' aspects of both those storylines (like expanding on how being powered twins allowed Jessica to merge into Nikki, or whatever the heck she did). I really like that twin dynamic and hope it gets explored further soon.
I can't wait for Peter to get out of Ireland. I'm not really into that particular storyline, but I'm also assuming that everything has a purpose and that he is going to gain important insight or go through important character development there. His reunion with Claire is going to be classic, whenever that happens. She, of all people, would be able to help him find himself again. The tattoo thing was cool. Somebody remind me - in the future episode from last season, did Peter not have at least one tattoo? My memory is fuzzy, but I am just wondering if this tattoo thing is an inability of ink to stay on his superpowered body or if there was something particular about the tattoo itself. Any thoughts?

Wake me up when Kristen Bell is on the show...until then, I'm firmly in the "ehhh" camp on Heroes this season. I'll tune in or watch on TiVo (abiding by my own "serial programs need patience from the audience to build quality storylines" decree from a few weeks ago), but it's clearly NOT appointment TV for me right now.
In related news, Bionic Woman - off my TiVo Season Pass, and out of my life.

I was not a fan of this episode of Heroes at all. I thought most of it was lame and cheesy. It seemed like something I could have written when I was 14. The dialog between Claire and West was also LAME. I'm hope Kristen Bell's character isn't lame. Maybe she should have gone with Lost after all.

Put me firmly in the Yawn Camp so far. Almost every one of these story lines is lame:
Hiro in ancient japan- so predictable, plus a total tease that -oh please oh please- it was coming to an end but also no. Plus writing to Ando in the future...sorry what? If you can move thru space and time just go forward and tell him the story when you're done.
Peter and the O'Badaccents- Really? He doesn't want to know who he is? Really?
Clair and Emo boy- this just seems really contrived.
Mohinder Infiltrates the Company & Parkman investigates the Geriatric Heroes are probably the two most interesting plot lines which is good for
those two guys since the whole my two dads thing requires a good deal of suspended disbelief.
Sylar- Look out for the Smoke Monster buddy.
Here's to hoping they get going somewhere with all soon there's only so much making out i can watch. -

West sort of gets on my nerves and I really don't trust him. Anyone who skulks outside of a girl's window and sarcastically tries to out her to others is not okay in my book. Besides, he's miffed at HRG and pitting Claire against him (whether he did it purposefully or not). I just don't trust him.
As for Micah/Niki .. I've never really cared for that SL but I did perk up when I saw who was playing the grandmother. Maybe it'll start getting better (though I still don't care for Niki).
I read an interview with the woman who plays Maya (her name escapes me at the moment) and when asked how her power works she replied to the effect of: "I don't want to spoil it - but let's just say that you shouldn't make my character cry or make her angry." So I'm guessing she goes black-eyed when she's upset. Hence the reason she set up the cops to upset her, knowing exactly what would happen (which I thought was pretty spunky of her since she spent most of the episodes running and crying - it redeemed her SL just a little in my eyes). And on a sidenote - it's hilarious that we got to see Claire's poor car again. If HRG bites the dust I'm going to be incredibly upset.

Three episodes in and I see big trouble, this has started off very, very lame.....
Jump the Shark watch has begun...

chris larry,
Where have you been? Jump the Shark on Heroes has already happened. I think the show Jumped the Shark when fly boy took cheerleader girl on the Superman and Lois fun ride in episode 2. I kept waiting for cheerleader girl to say "....if you need to be loved, here i am. Read my mind."

coolrrpublica,
Wasnt the "superman 1" season on episode three? But details aside I think I agree with you....

Here are a few of my crackpot Heroes theories (well, mine and my friends theories):
Remember what Claire's birth mom was going to do when she got the money from Nathan? Take the money and go back to Mexico? How much history could she have in Central America? Enough to give birth to twins?
Could powers evolve, along with people? Is it possible that Claire or Peter could focus the healing powers on other people? I've seen other sci-fi stuff that relates self-healing to ultra-long life, since aging could be looked at as your body breaking itself down faster than it can repair itself. If someone had control of their powers for long enough, could they (more or less) choose to age? If that's the case, how many white guys have we seen with British accents that have healing-related powers? I'm not sayin'... I'm just sayin'.
I still say that the only weakness the show has is too many storylines. It seems like all they've been doing since the first season was build. We expected a climax or some resolution in the season finale, but all we got was more building to the future.
Oh yeah, one more thing... how do we know that Isaac's paintings haven't all come true? Is there one that definitely has not come true, or are they all either true or not true yet? One thought line in sci-fi of playing with space-time is the inevitability of events. If we can see what happens in the future, can we stop it? Or will whatever action we take cause it to happen? Or would it go Terminator on us and the Judgement Day event just keeps getting pushed back?
One final thought... when is Claire going to get the adamantite blades put into her arms?
