Rate It! What's Your Fall Season List?

OK, we're into the third week of the fall season. It's decision time. It's TiVo-disk-space, evening-time allocation time. What new shows this fall are you actually still watching? Here's my list:

1. Pushing Daisies.* This gets an asterisk, as it has the advantage of having aired only its pilot.

2. Tell Me You Love Me. Not sure if this counts--since I've actually already watched the entire thing--but I'm listing it because (a) probably no one else will, and (b) this list is short enough as it is.

3. Aliens in America. But this may become one of those shows I admire more than I actually watch.

4. Chuck. See Aliens in America.

5. Reaper. And falling, after this week's episode. (Which was, more or less, last week's episode.)

5 1/2. Kid Nation. "1/2," because I fast-forwarded through half of it last week. I still have some interest, but this could drop off the list any minute.

6. Gossip Girl. In theory, I'm still interested in this soap... in practice, last week's episode is still unwatched on my TiVo.

And that's it. I'm not counting shows that--like Dirty Sexy Money and Bionic Woman--I'll keep up with for now, for professional reasons. And which of these shows would I watch every single week, if I didn't write about TV for a living? The top two, maybe. Nothing else compelling enough to break my existing network and cable habits.

Your turn. You don't have to annotate your list (I did because, eh, that's what I do). Maybe we'll make this a weekly thing and see how your lists evolve over the fall. (Maybe Women's Murder Club and Viva Laughlin will make your lists, except that they won't.) I have a feeling these lists could start getting really short, really fast.

    1. Journeyman
    2. Chuck
    3. Pushing Daisies
    4. Bionic Woman
    5. Reaper
    6. Cane
    7. Life
    8. K-Ville

I hate throwing things away, and I hate dropping shows that may turn out good if given time. That's why I'm holding on to Cane, Life, and K-Ville.

    1. Bionic Woman
    2. Reaper - but I'm losing interest gradually
    3. Chuck - but only because its been rerun on Fridays otherwise I'd never see it (no Tivo and I'm not invested enough to tape it).

  • 3

First off, what's up with all the critics all of a sudden turning their backs on Reaper. You guys loved the pilot and know the premise. So far it has been following the premise. What were you expecting from this show? I kind of agree that the capturing an escaped soul every episode can get old after a while. Season 1 of Smallville did the same thing with the meteor freak of the week but they eventually started arching out the storylines.

However, the Devil seems to be asking the question "Why do people do the things they do?" in different ways. Which goes with the bigger picture of working versus doing nothing.

    here's my list.

    1. Reaper
    2. Pushing Daisies
    3. Chuck
    4. Gossip Girl
    5. Dirty Sexy Money

DSM has to improve if I'll keep watching.

@ Chris Kw.: Well, we--which is to say I--expect development and evolution, for starters. Maybe not everyone needs that, but it's hardly a special standard that I apply only to Reaper. (I'm seeing it in Chuck, for instance, even though I thought Reaper's pilot was far better.) The pilot looked to me like it had the potential to be more than Law & Order: Escaped Souls Unit. And it may become more, but for now, I'm basing judgment on the show it is, not the show I hope it will be.

I've had the same concerns about Pushing Daisies, btw, hence the asterisk.

TELL ME YOU LOVE ME. End of story.

I've only got 3 newbies I really like:

    1. Chuck
    2. Reaper
    3. Gossip Girl (despite the loud, frequent, pained protests of my husband, who can't tolerate it)

I thought I would be watching Journeyman still, but I just didn't feel like it this week, and don't know if I have the time and energy to stay up late (yeah, sorry, 10pm is late for me) to watch it. That's a show that I'll rent when the whole season is released, and watch in a weekend.

Let me tell you what I don't like. Bionic Woman. Just not doing it for me. At All. I only gave that one 2 weeks, and nothing I saw made me want to watch more.

On Chuck: This show improves upon further viewing. I have enjoyed every single episode MORE watching them through a second time. It is clever and funny and is building some sweet, interesting characters. I have no complaints yet.

On Reaper: The show is establishing a groove. It can evolve into something more once it gets its groove established. Buffy and Smallville (and even Supernatural to some extent) took awhile to get the big arcs and mythologies going. I like watching the boys getting used to their new job, and I like the themes that the show is addressing. I can't believe that people are already complaining about it. There was way less whining and more stepping up in this episode than last week's episode - so, forward momentum in my eyes.

    Returning faves:
    Supernatural
    The Office
    Heroes
    Prison Break
    Ugly Betty
    Bones

My Ugh I Can't Believe I'm Watching This Show Again That I Gave Up On A Long Time Ago But Dangit If They Didn't Go And Put My Favorite Actor In It But Aren't Giving Him Nearly Enough Screen Time To Justify The Time Expended Watching the Stupid Thing:
    Desperate Housewives (go Captain Mal!)

    New Shows:

Moonlight - Giving it a try, but interest is waning. Angel did the whole vampire/PI thing a lot better.
Chuck - So far, my favorite new show.
Bionic Woman - Enjoying it, it could stand to pick up the pace a little, though.
Life - I enjoy the quirky detective angle, but it's performed a little better on L&O: Criminal Intent and on Goldblum's short-lived Raines.

    Returning Shows
The Unit - Still love it, though I have to admit that I often skip the portions with the wives.
    NCIS - Interest is waning.
    Supernatural
    Smallville
    Bones
    Heroes
    Jericho

Chuck and Reaper are the only new shows I'm watching. I'm enjoying both and don't see myself dropping them, mostly because I have nothing else to do when Netflix hasn't come yet and I am out of school work. I would have REALLY loved to have seen Sam come around and offer to go to school with Andi.

I can't imagine any situation in which I were single and said "No, I wouldn't like to go see monkeys with you." That seemed really forced to me. All in all though I think they are fleshing out the characters beyond their regular shtick. The devil is clearly not just evil, he almost seems to care about Sam. Whether that is simply because a happy worker is a good worker or some other reason is beyond me though.

Law and Order: Escaped Souls Unit is funny though... and considering those girls used to work on that show I could see them falling into that mold which would make me sad.

Remember, the X-Files started as Monster of the Week "crap" and they were going to cancel it after the first season. I think (hope) they're just laying the groundwork for the characters before letting loose with some real story.

Chuck is ok, it's very funny, but mostly I just miss Jayne "Public Relations" Cobb so seeing Adam Baldwin in a similar role puts a smile on my face.

    1. Pushing Daisies. Still need to point out we've only seen one episode.

    And rapidly waning, in order:
    2. Reaper/Chuck/Journeyman/Bionic Woman. Are these shows going anywhere?

I won't quite say this is a lost season (2002's quick execution of Mann & Co.'s Robbery Homicide Division and Whedon's Firefly is tough to top), but I am wondering when The Shield and Lost return already.

  • 10

    Tell Me You Love Me
    Mad Men
    Californication

Only seen half of Pushing Daisies 1st ep

The rest? Forget it. Which is a relief because the DVR's are already filling up with great non-new stuff, and there's that pile of books next to the bed...(remember books?)

  • 11

Pushing Daisies - if only to find out the answer to the question "What if they made a TV series about The Princess Bride?" (the tone of the two feels exactly the same to me)

Chuck - I wish it had more soul; I worry that it will become Ed + explosions.

Reaper - currently suffering a TiVo conflict right now, hoping to catch up with it in repeats/downloads

That's it. There's other stuff I'll watch for relationship reasons (Journeyman, Moonlight, Life is Wild) but these are the only ones that interest me.

  • 12

    1. Pushing Daisies - I don't care that we've only seen one episode. I'm riding this one as long as it's on the air. Fantastic casting, brilliant premise, amazing chemistry...basically, one of the most original shows in tone on television.

    2. Chuck - this show is growing on me. Zachary Levi (is that his name?) is pretty excellent, Adam Baldwin repeatedly steals scenes, and I like the chemistry between Chuck and Sarah (who, I should add, is rather attractive). Plus, the play the nerd card in non-obvious, ingenious ways (was that seriously a Dark Crystal reference last week? And the "Bob Ross-ian" painting?)

    3. Life - the "House as a police show" entry of the season. Damian Lewis makes this character work....not surprising, given his excellent work on Band of Brothers. I'll keep it on the TiVo for now.

And that's it. Bionic Woman was bionic in its joylessness and bleakness; I won't watch Dirty Sexy Money because I know that like Desperate Housewives, it can only truly be decent for one season; Reaper interferes with House/Bones; I gave up on Grey's so I'm not going to follow Addison into Private Practice; and nothing else looks remotely interesting. Wake me when "The Sarah Connors Chronicles" debuts...

As for returning shows? Friday Night Lights, 30 Rock, The Office, CSI, Bones, House, Heroes (which has been disappointing so far), Dexter, and (yes) Boston Legal. Once they return (or if they do in some cases, due to the pending writers' strike), I'll be tuning into Lost, 24, and The Wire.

  • 13

We all forgot about Lucy Daughter of the devil which is way funnier then aliens in america could even dream of

  • 14

    My schedule-altering new faves:

Chuck - Still making me laugh. Zachary Levi and Adam Baldwin are just great here.
Pushing Daisies - Too adorable not to like.
Private Practice - What can I say, I'm a sucker for Shonda Rhimes and the Grey's recipe.
Gossip Girl - How delicious is this show? I DVR it and watch it with breakfast on Saturdays...one of my favorite parts of the week.

I really WANT to like Reaper, Bionic Woman and Journeyman but I'm just not hooked into the over-arching stories yet.

    Returning faves:
Friday Night Lights - This should couldn't be any more perfect, so I'm keeping an open mind to see how they handle the Bad Thing.
Heroes - Starting kind of slow (and I really couldn't hate the new twins any more), but I'm sticking with it.
Grey's Anatomy - Because I loved the first two seasons and I'm hanging in there.
Ugly Betty - Oh so funny and fabulous.

  • 15

@chaddogg: The Wire, at least, has already wrapped production. So there's that.

  • 16

    New Shows:
    Chuck
    Reaper
    Bionic Woman
    Life
    Pushing Daisies
    Tell Me You Love Me
    Mad Men

    Returning Shows:
Heroes, Bones (this is new to me), America's Next Top Model, FNL, Nip/Tuck (when it returns), American Idol (see Nip/Tuck), Men In Trees, Ugly Betty

  • 17

All I can say is: four more months.

Four long months of sorry excuses for TV shows until LOST returns.

  • 18

@Jonathan - I wouldn't call all other TV shows "sorry excuses" (I mean, have you SEEN Friday Night Lights? Pushing Daisies? And 30 Rock/The Office remain amazingly funny week-in, week-out...) but I feel your pain.

Incidentally, great column on EW.com (a Time-sister site) by their Doc Jensen on Lost, including a Kevin Smith interview about the show (needless to say, he's a geeked out fan like the rest of us)

  • 19

Shows I can spare using my download limit on:

    1. Chuck
    2. Pushing Daisies
    3. Life

Also Heroes, House and The Office.

  • 20

    Tell Me You Love Me
    Dexter
    Mad Men
    Life
Have DVRd Damages for a long, cold winter

    The Unit
    House
    Bones
    Mystery
    The Daily Show
ER (I know, I know, but I still love it)
    Most of the L&Os
    Some of the CSIs
    The occasional Shark
    Cold Case when I remember
and Boston Legal when I miss me some little Jimmy Spader

Will check out Criminal Minds when Joe Mantegna arrives. Oh, and love Top Chef and Project Runway! And try to watch at least 3-4 movies a week, too.

    I don't have a life.

  • 21

    Melissa169a "I don't have a life."

Netflix is your friend, indulge yourself with arty foreign flicks that no one has ever heard of.

Coincidentally, I'm disturbed every time I see the Oldboy poster in the background of Chuck's room. It was a fantastic movie right up till the end at which point it lost me.

  • 22

    NEW SHOWS:
    Life
    Pushing Daisies
    ...maybe Aliens in America...

    RETURNING SHOWS:
    Dexter
    The Office
    30 Rock
    House
Project Runway (can't wait for November)
    Ugly Betty
    Scrubs (also, November, I think)

and like many have said, LOST when it returns in February Can't. Hardly. Wait.

Netflix is awesome. I usually watch TV on DVD, almost done with Buffy, then I'm going to try to get into The Wire.

  • 23

Overall list of what I watch:

    1. Weeds
    2. Californication (why doesn't James talk about this show)
    3. Chuck (nostalgic for Firefly, Jayne is in it)
    4. Heroes
    5. Kid Nation (guilty pleasure)
I tried to watch Reaper but it just is too stupid. The comic relief character is just not interesting enough. Also, that state the plot of the show every 5 minutes...that is just retarded.

  • 24

    New Shows
    1. Pushing Daisies
    2. Gossip Girl (we needed a teen drama set in New York!)
    3. Reaper
    4. Aliens In America
    5. Dirty Sexy Money (It seems to have potential)
    6. Californication (see Jamie above)
    7. Chuck
    8. Damages (what happened to the watches?)
    9. Flight of the Conchords

    Returning Shows
    1. Weeds (Again, why doesn't James talk about this show?)
    2. Prison Break
    3. Heroes
    4. How I Met Your Mother
    5. Dexter
    6. 30 Rock
    7. Lost (when it starts)

I think thats about it, I watch a lot of TV.

  • 25

The only new shows I'm sticking with are:

    1) Tell Me You Love Me
    2) Life
    3) Bionic Woman (mostly because it's turning into a BSG reunion show, and it's on right before Life)
