The Morning After: Sing Sing Sing

Robert Voets/CBS
So despite the warnings of the industrialized world's largest force of trained television critics, did you watch Viva Laughlin anyway? Time to chime in on that or any other of last night's TV. The Office was nice and poignant, though I'm eager to get back to the half-hour format, while 30 Rock absolutely killed. Kenneth's walk-and-talk scene was just inspired, as was everything else involving Kenneth ("...and I guess we have to get married now") and Liz's awkward attempts to bond with / manage Tracy's wife ("Bling bling bling! That's ghettofabulous!" "This belonged to Brooke Astor.").
Also, I'll have a Mad Men post later this morning--keep your shirt on!--but if you just can't wait, be my guest. Sing it like you mean it!

James, Tuned-In cannot be caged. A bird must fly. A fish must swim. And a tiger must turn into a Chinese dude at midnight.
(That being said, I was kind of disappointed in 30 Rock's inability to use Steve Buscemi more productively. This show has been built on the awesome guest star appearance, so I had high hopes for Buscemi, and was a little let down...)

Re. Mad Men 0MG! Wonder if Peggy will give it away - how could she have NOT known? Will the lovely Dept. Store daughter stay away that long? Betcha the crazy neighbor lady in her bedroom slippers does her family in - there was no such thing as postpartum depression in 1961. And Don's wife is becoming suicidal, I think. The smug smarminess of all the male characters (actors doing a very good job at that, I must say)made me recall how crappy it was workign in the 60's. It was, indeed, just like that. Well...I will miss this show immensely! Does this mean I have to watch Men In Trees now?

Ugly Betty seems to be a bit more surreal (or at least more comfortable with it's outrageousness) than it was last year. A good thing, in my opinion, but I wonder how far they can take it before they alienate people.

I'm going to watch Viva Laughlin online -- it is far more important to catch Its Always Sunny in Philadephia to keep that on the air.

chaddogg's right: steve buscemi's role was lame. but kenneth more than made up for it with his walk-talk bit. that's pure genius.

Re Ugly Betty: I thought it was allright. Amanda was back in form last night, at least. It was hard for me to reconcile Betty from last night with Betty from a year ago - she is supposed to be the individual, the strong one, the moral backbone for everyone else, and here we see her being insecure and weak: waffling and lying and plagarizing. It did make sense, in that it showed how she is A) starting to see moral grey areas; B) gonna have to deal with the fact that she isn't perfect, and probably needs to take a small step of her high horse; C) needing acceptance and approval in some area of her life; and D) that working at Mode is having small, creeping influences on her personality and her decisions.
The baby-is-Henry's-4realz twist was way obvious from the moment Henry started the tutoring of Justin and was trying to be like superdad. That sucks that the baby is his - sucks for Betty anyway. Sucks worse that he knew for 2 days and just kept stringing her along - like he has THIS WHOLE TIME. I am tired of their back-and-forth, it is getting really old. Henry isn't treating Betty with any respect in this, and he is a total wuss for staying with Charlie just because she is pregnant with his kid. Yes, he should be there for his child, but that doesn't mean returning to an unfulfilling, committed relationship to a crazy ho. From the previews, this issue is still not over, so we'll see. . .
Re Office: Yay! I am a major fan of the hour-long episodes, sorry to see them coming to an end
I do kinda wish that they had spread them out throughout the season, but no complaints from me. Loved Jim&Pam Go To Schrute Farm. The moment with Jim and Dwight on the stairwell near the end was perfectly played, as was Jim's kiss and declaration of being "in love with". . . Italian food! I so love how the show is handling their relationship. Kelly and Darrell crack me up to no end, Darrell is probably the only character on the show that could potentially ever get/keep Kelly in line. I like their chemistry. I thought it was hilarious to watch Michael function in his 2nd job. I really appreciated the resolution at the end with Michael and Jan, finally we see a spark of why they are together, and Jan shows some well-deserved appreciation for Michael putting up with her crazy bum. Can't wait to get home and watch Supernatural!

Also - the Daniel/Alexis relationship on Ugly Betty totally rocks the house. I think that Willi has unintentionally solidified her opposition - both Daniel and Alexis made such major advancements in being honest and close - his confession, her forgiveness, and the whole thing with him standing up to the Van Der Be-Jerk ad guy for Alexis. The two of them apart could never challenge Willi effectively - but together, as a family, Daniel and Alexis can become a real force to be reckoned with, the only thing with real potential to overcome her evil schemes. Yay!

Viva Laughlin didn't seem like a horrible show like some critics have made it out to be. It's not dynamic or particularily original, and some of the dialogue came from the cliche handbook, but otherwise, I liked the cast and the premise and am looking forward to more Melanie Griffith and Hugh Jackman.
As someone who walked out on Across the Universe, I enjoyed the actors singing with, and not replacing, the actual performers. They're like backup singers. I wish that they would have more creative song selection (maybe some Wilco in the future) but I am glad these are not original songs and the actors aren't belting them out.

@chad, I don't usually disagree with you (I miss the Lost Discussion Group) but i like buscemi's role. When he takes that diet coke out of his pocket takes a big drink and puts it back, killed me. Also picking up the cigar, peeling out every time in his big ol Capris Classic for no particular reason... i dunno he was making me laugh.
Other than that:
"You smell like Enorme and brass polish, you been at a strip club!""My cousin Tim rigs NBA games..." Brilliant.
"A lone soldier walks through the desert, the year 1861, the place... Mars."
Ok I'll stop now.
