JPTV: What I Can't Entirely Explain Why I Won't Be Watching Tonight

I've thought for some time that I should have a term for a show that I generally admire, enjoy whenever I by chance end up watching it, then promptly thereafter forget its existence for months, for no reason I can satisfyingly explain.

Maybe I should call this kind of show a "Scrubs." When it came on the air in 2001, I gave it a very good review and have ever since enjoyed it so much that I hardly ever watch it. I can't quite tell you why. True, I'm not a big fan of the fantasy sequence-itis. (David E. Kelley called! He wants his narrative crutch back!) But Scrubs is hardly a non-sequitur-fest like Family Guy; it's funny but also has heart and a little pathos, and ooh!, that Zach Braff! I could just eat him up! And yet I don't watch. Show somehow never closed the deal. So it remains a "Scrubs" for me.

But somebody's kept watching, and tonight it comes back to kick off its final season. Will you be there? And what show is your personal "Scrubs"?

Boston Legal is generally my "Scrubs"...I TiVo it (I have space and nothing else in that time slot), but frequently never get around to watching it. When it is on, it's background for whatever else I'm doing....while I enjoy the show and frequently find it amusing, it's hardly appointment television, or something I actively keep up with.

@James - Does Daniel Dae Kim's DUI arrest mean Jin is getting killed this season?

    Another Lost DUI!?
The producers should write mandatory Steering Wheel Breathalysers into all of the cast's contracts.

Also James you're not missing much on the Scrubs front it has followed the typical sitcom pattern of the characters slowly devolving into caricatures and while i used to enjoy Scrubs very much now I find my self thinking, "Well this is just stupid."

Yeah, after the first couple seasons I stopped watching new Scrubs episodes, but have caught up on most of the newer ones thanks to constant Comedy Central re-runs. The show definitely lost something. I would say it used to be a 8:2 good to bad joke ratio, but now it is about the opposite.

Way too much wackiness for me. It kind of seems like they are trying to make an "adult" version of Saved By The Bell sometimes...

Stopped watching Scrubs a while ago. Alternately too melodramatic/too cutesy-poo. And too much of the "willtheyorwon'tthey-itis."

Also, the weird scheduling didn't help.

CSI: The Original, Part One, is my Scrubs. It's semi-interesting. The writing's not bad. And whenever I catch part of it in syndication somehwere, I'll watch, but I just can't make myself watch it when it airs on CBS.

Scrubs is my Scrubs, but also this season My Name is Earl. I don't know why, but it's just languishing on my DVR as we speak.

I have to admit that I have never seen a single episode of Scrubs.....not even a single second from flipping thru the channels. Since I've never watched, I really am not qualified to comment, but Zach Braff always "seemed" to have that Steve Guttenburg and Matthew Broderick quality of mugging and playing to the camera. Does he? Also, he and the bald black guy (I have no idea who he is) both look like they are in high school instead of adult doctors. It just never attracted me.

Actually, I have a lot of "Scrubs" in my TV viewing.

My Scrubs is Prison Break with Heroes is threatening to join it as Scrubs #2. Both are serials but easier to follow than say, Lost, if I skip a few episodes. That's not saying I would skip an episode of Lost, because I couldn't do that, in fact, I don't think it would be physically possible.

I don't have any real "Scrubs" right now (other than Scrubs) but when it was on "Everybody Loves Raymond" was a huge Scrub.... a great show, enjoyed it everytime I watched it... but never made time for it.

  • 10

You asked: "...what show is your personal Scrubs?"

I have a couple of them... "Ugly Betty" is the first one that comes to mind. It's clearly funny, well-written and well-acted, gets great reviews and I've enjoyed it when I've watched it... but I can't get motivated enough to even TiVo it. Too many other shows that take up my limited TV time. I highly respect the show, but from a distance.

    I do watch "Scrubs", though.

Three talk shows make up my Scrubs: The Daily Show, Colbert Report, and Conan. I just never remember to watch (or can't stay awake), but when I do, I laugh and laugh.

  • 12

    I really love Scrubs.
I'll admit that the second and third seasons are the best.

  • 13

I'm still a Scrubs fan, although I can't deny that the earlier seasons were better.

But my personal Scrubs is probably 30 Rock, and I can't explain why either. I think the show's hilarious, and am a HUGE Tina Fey fan (I've practically stopped watching SNL since she left), but I always seem to go to my other recorded shows first - maybe because a lack of cliffhangers? I'm never dying to know what's going to happen next, like in FNL or even The Office.

I feel like I have a TON of Scrubs shows--I could probably count on one hand the number of shows that I regularly DVR and truly look forward to and would be disappointed to see cancelled, versus shows that I'll watch while I read the paper. Honestly, I think the ratio is probably 1:5.

But if you're talking about shows in that second number that I always enjoy when I get around to watching--as opposed to just tolerate--I'd say "Everybody Hates Chris." It's always funny, but I've just never been able to get excited about it.

I have been watching Scrubs since the beginning and occasionally watch the rerune on Comedy Central. And I can honestly say that I can't tell the difference between any of the seasons. It's always been the same goofy show. Are seasons 2 and 3 really the best? What happened in those seasons? What distiguishes them from the others? Maybe I just didn't notice any differences because it's a show that I never put much thought into outside of the 22 minutes it is on the air.

As for my Scrubs. I would say House. I have never been bored with it but I just don't get motivated to watch it.

The tivo has definitely changed the landscape of 'scrubs' shows. I do watch Scrubs and am more apt to always hit the sitcoms that I record.

The shows that I do let languish are the procedurals, L&O SVU, Numbers, CSI, Criminal Minds... all varying degrees of actual goodness and since there is not so much an ongoing story I don't feel bad if I tune out for a while.

It doesn't hurt that I always watch that whole lineup:

My "Scrubs" is probably Without a Trace. I've happened to watch a few episodes and they seem good, but I've never added it to my schedule.

@Chaddogg: My first thought when I learned about DDK's DUI was "But I don't want Jin to die!" At least now we'll see if that rule only applies to Tailies.

I got the opposite, series that I think sucks but that i continue to watch anyway. Big Shots, I can't for the love of god understand why, but I do. I can only hope I get over it...

  • 19

@San - That show for me was Surface. I kept watching to see if it just might get better. It never did and was thankfully put out of it's misery after the first season. Should have happened sooner.

  • 20

@San--So good to know I'm not alone. I blame Tivo. I was much more discriminating before I had this technology.

The show i watched and never knew why..and hate it sooo much that when i hear the word "New York"
    I cringe...Im talking about VH1's reality show
I Love New York...after watching one episode and seeing these gurly men after a manufactured girl.
I couldnt wait to wait until the following sunday to see if what her reaction was..although i would never dicuss this program amongst my friends and family, my mom viewed it once and hastily grabbed the remote to change the channel....Its just something about men chasing after one woman and fighting over her like she was the last one standing, thankfully now i have ceased all viewing of the show at least the new season.

Friday Night Lights is my Scrubs, for some reason. I love it, but immediately forget about it.

Anyone who hasn't seen Scrubs needs only to turn on the television at anytime of day since it seems to be constantly playing on some channel, somewhere.

@San: Heh. Kind of like a guilty pleasure without the pleasure? Yeah, I have those shows. Actually, Big Shots is my current one, too.
