Heroes Watch: History Repeats

NBC Photo: Dean Hendler
So nice to see HRG back to being a badass again! Or at least an essentially-good-but-forced-to-be-bad-for-the-sake-of-his-family-though-it-may-come-at-the-cost-of-his-soul-ass. Killing someone for information is bad. Taking someone's memories for information is bad. But taking someone's memories to extract information, knowing all the while that you're going to kill them anyway--that's a reminder of the extremes of coldness of which Company Man HRG is capable, and it's to Heroes credit that the show's willing to remind us of that, even now that he's a nominal good guy.
Otherwise, a great deal of jumping about in this episode, which I'm inclined to fast-forward you through, TiVo-style. Maya's still taken in by Gabriel/Sylar, who's still evil and giving big evil-ly speeeches -- boo-boop! -- Claire and West prank the head cheerleader in another boilerplate high school story that invites unflattering comparisons with Buffy -- boo-boop! -- Monica has her abilities spared and receives the iPod of power --- boo-boop! -- Mo partners up with Niki, raising hope-against-hope that the show could somehow manage to kill them both off at once -- boo-boop! -- Hiro gets his secret found out by the swordmaker's daughter and kisses her so hard he breaks history -- boo-boop! -- Wait, am I missing something? Let's rewind -- boo-boop! boo-boop! boo-boop! --- Nope, nothing to say about Kristen Bell at all.
Which brings us up to the final minute, where we got a sense of where this season is going. Peter and the Irish Spring lass fast-forward themselves to an extremely fakey-looking, Sears Portrait Studio set of Times Squaare, where they discover... a massive disaster is going to strike New York City in the near future unless they prevent it! Wait, are we sure they didn't just visit the past? As in, last season? Nope--as the next-episode preview informs us, this year's Big Bad is bigger and badder, in scale, anyway, as something has killed off 93% of the Earth's population; my bets are on an outbreak of the runny-eye plague.
And that brings us up to speed for this week. I've been trying to be patient, give the stories a chance to develop and avoid prematurely judging season 2, but I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that creator Tim Kring just addressed some of those criticisms to the LA Times. According to the Times, Kring told the paper, "'We haven't deviated that much' from last year's formula."
Um, that's kind of the problem, no? (Granted, "formula" was the LA Times' word, but can anyone argue that it was the wrong word choice?) Don't get me wrong: I believe that serial shows like Heroes and Lost need time to develop before you write off entire seasons, and I actually still have faith that even Hiro's samurai sojourn will end up being relevant to the larger story. My problem with the season so far is not too many extra characters or storylines; it's that the strategy, as far as I can see one, has beeen to reboot the show and try to give people something as close as possible to the show they liked last year. Thus the arbitrary scattering of the Heroes to the winds just so they could come together again--because that's what they did last year. Thus Claire experiencing the same issues in high school, thus another scene of devastated Manhattan.
I'm willing to give Kring the patience to see where he takes the story. But I hope he gives his audience the credit for wanting something more than a second version of what he gave them last year. Just ask Hiro: going back in time and recreating history isn't as easy as you might think.

I already can't wait for season 3. I'm expecting a season long clip show combining season 1 and 2.
Remember, 2008, that's next year!

Oh and I'm expecting an outbreak of the Shanti virus among the general population. The runny eye thing seems more like a chemical attack then a biological one to me.

I enjoyed last night's episode, I definitely appreciated seeing several storylines start to have points last night. However, I am officially (and for the first time) really freakin' bored with The Wonder Twins and Sylar Go To New York. That storyline should have taken maybe 3 episodes, and here they are JUST CROSSING THE BORDER. There had better be one heck of a payoff from that whole storyline.
So I guess the Company gave Sylar the same thing that Boss Man wanted Mohinder to give to Monica? It seems pretty obvious that the virus that wipes out 93% of the world's population is gonna be something similar to what Mo was predicting would happen if the Company kept messing around with their power-controlling virus - it mutates and gets into the general population. Maybe not, but if it isn't, then they sure are wasting a bunch of time on false foreshadowing.
And I can't figure out how to interpret Boss Man's whole thing to Mo about the Company needing Mo to be their conscience, and his subsequent paternal scene helping Monica embrace her powers. The whole thing seemed contrived. Are we supposed to think that Boss Man just gets carried away with his job, but that he is just a real person beneath all that (with a soft spot like Noah)? Was this all a test to see how far they could push Mo? Was this all a plot-device so that Mo can make dire predictions about the future, to echo what Peter soon witnesses in the future?
And what has happened to Mohinder? The EW TVWatch made a really good point - they are having a conscience-driven character violate his conscience for purely plot-driven purposes, which is irritating the heck out of me, because I had never liked Mohinder, and then this season started out and he was all super-cool, and now I'm all disappointed again. He is a whiny, whiny dude.
And his partnership with Niki? I couldn't get a good read off Niki - was it really Niki? Was it Jessica? Have the two been more effectively merged? Was the actress doing a good job, by playing things ambiguously, or was she doing a bad job representing one personality or the other? Niki is one of my favorite characters, but she has had the lamest storylines to work with.
Lots of questions. Loved HRG in the Ukraine (except the blue screens are obvious and driving me nuts!!!), and I liked seeing a little more of the influence (probably negative) that West is having on Claire. The prank-the-cheerleader subplot was silly, but the bee-atch did deserve it.
So I liked the episode but am starting to let a bit of frustration seep in. I've been a freakin' paragon of patience so far this season, next week had better be really really good. I am looking forward to the future episode next week, although it does have the feel of "been there, done that" to it.

Hiro only thinks he damaged the timeline. The painting Isaac made last year suggests Hiro's actions are a part of the main line of events in the 1600s.
I really want to see more Hiro. I'm fed with Peter, Sylar, and Claire.
Unfortunately, I'm sucked into this like a Wheel of Time novel.

I agree with the crowd: the 2008 plague is the Shanti virus. The "surprise" is that it is released by the Company for good reasons, i.e. that the (long time special) founders decide their children (both literal and figurative) have caused too much trouble and decide to neutralize them all. Problems inevitably ensue.
But I wouldn't be so quick to fast forward entirely through all the side stories:
West and Claire: I thought it would be revealed that West was brainwashed into working for whomever, but with his ubermensch comments, I think he is legitimately working for some violent, radical, Special Power group. Ironically, they are probably after HRG because they think he's still with the Company. West and Elle could be the beginning of a Magneto/Xavier conflict over the future of Specials and humans.
Mohinder: I thought this was a hamfisted way of trying to illustrate that there has been a regime change at the Company and that they are arguably on the good side. It wouldn't surprise me if the Parent-killer (who is not Parkman's dad, he's as targeted as the rest of them) is a Company agent working on the side of the angels by taking out the dangerous, evil members of the last generation. Plus, when HRG destroys the Company, it'll turn out to be the worst thing he could have done.
Hiro: Not much of a surprise here, messing with time travel always goes bad. Hiro could have picked a better enemy though: comics have firmly established that regenerators grow to adulthood and then are essentially immortal (e.g. Wolverine); I fully expect Kensei to be waiting for Hiro when he gets back to 2007. Or have we heard him mentioned already: notice the Adam name tag. If I'd been around since ~1650, I'd start to think I was the first man too.
Sylar & co.: Actually, I have nothing to add here. This whole plot thread seems to be a mess. Is this really the best way to get Maya on the dark side / throw doubt on the origin of the plague? I'm just not feeling it.
But seriously: "New York is screwed in the future - again!" Worst. Plot Thread. Of The Entire 2007 TV Season.

"Unfortunately, I'm sucked into this like a Wheel of Time novel"
Now THAT is an evil comparison.
I accept a slow build as just part of Kring's storytelling style and I don't think that will change no matter how many seasons Heroes goes.
As far as the separation of characters, I don't find it nearly as unreasonable as most fans. I think that people were going into S2 expecting the Heroes to form a Heroes Academy (despite the fact that would cause everyone to howl about how badly Heroes was ripping off X-Men) and start fighting crime together. Instead, they tried to go back to some semblance of a normal life. There was nothing binding these people together. HRG knew he had to hide from the Company. Parkman wanted to pursue his law enforcement career, with a hell of an advantage. The Petrellis were mourning Peter. Niki wanted to try to get on with her life with Micah now that Linderman is dead. And Hiro unfortunately would up in feudal Japan.
We could find out in the flashback ep that this is all some sort of conspiracy between them, but for right now, I'm accepting that they were trying to put the events in NYC behind them in the best ways they could. Of course, if they were successful at that, we wouldn't have a show.
-
7
@ Anonymous: I completely agree with your assessment - I didn't expect them to band together forever after the NYC incident last year, these are all people from different places, with lives and families and goals of their own, who will be trying to move on after the craziness they experienced. Perhaps the end of this season will forge some more long-lasting links that future seasons could build on, but it seems a natural progression of events for many of these people (most of whom were only VERY BRIEFLY ever thrown together) to have gone their separate ways, only to have their separate journeys again be interconnected with each other's journeys (only now with a more historical/generational component!).
I am really enjoying watching things build, I have really enjoyed this season so far and continue to have high hopes for the rest of the season, minor frustrations aside.

Alright, in an attempt to inject SOME semblance of Lost-style theory/mythology into Heroes (although this entire effort may be futile...), here's my theory:
Elle and West are brother/sister. They're aligned with a number of others in hunting down last season's "good" heroes and turning them to darker, more nefarious purposes (or else eliminating them entirely). In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to find that Kensei is evil, too, and present back in 1600 Japan to neutralize Hiro (who the evil forces somehow figured out had gone back to that time period). Elle is after Peter. West is after Claire (last night made it perfectly clear that West is evil; the whole "we're better than them because we have powers" speech is straight out of evil guy dialogue 101). Kensei is after Hiro. And once these evil forces "get" those three heroes to join them (or kill them), they will be unstoppable and able to do whatever they want (like unleash the virus?)
So how's that for a theory? Not as good (or fully developed) as the famous "Charlie is evil" theory of Lost Season 3, but it maybe sets out some type of theory that would make this season of Heroes at least slightly interesting.

Why is it necessary for a serial-type show to close with "To be continued..."? Isn't that kinda assumed?
-
10
I'm going to go ahead and be "that person." Time online has serious issues with typos. PLEASE, all you need is a basic spell-checking program to catch most of the errors I find on your site everyday. Even the "quote of the day" had a problem this morning.
Oh, yes, Heroes is awesome.
-
11
"Thus Claire experiencing the same issues in high school, thus another scene of devastated Manhattan."
'xatly.
I'm really getting annoyed by the claire-storyline.
And I should have started counting the times I yelled 'again?'
this season should be called "back to square one". jeez -
12
Nat X... go away.
I'm posting from work and don't have access to a "simple spell-checking program" unless I want to copy and paste what I write into word and then fix the changes then recopy. That's too much of a hassle to comply with your tear stained request.
-
13
I'm assuming Nat X means me, in which case he's right. I can't speak for the rest of time.com--my problem is that I tend to write straight into Moveable Type when I blog. There's no spelling check on my browser and it's impossible (for me) to proof in the tiny text-entry window. I tend to preview and proof or post and correct, but even then, frankly, I'm not the best proofreader of my own work.
And yet I've always been anti-spelling checker. (Only witches use "spell checkers"! See, I can be pedantic too!) They flag too many words that aren't actually misspellings, and tend to miss things like doubled letters ("too" for "to"), which are my most common errors thanks to a heavy hand on the keyboard. And those Autocorrect features, which do catch things like doubled letters, drive me insane. There's just no technological substitute for a good old-fashioned public shaming.

That LA Times article said Cane had experienced alarming declines, does that mean we might get Richard Alpert back on Lost after all? I hope so.
-
15
It's hard to want to watch next week when it feels like I've seen the same exact story before in some other show...oh wait, it's the same show. I'll keep checking the recaps. Let me know when things start picking up again.

This may be a random tangent but I feel compelled to blather for a moment on the subject of expectations.
I suppose I'm not a terribly sophisticated television viewer - the last time I followed a series on TV, George Clooney was rocking ER and I was in my senior year of high school. That said, I am enjoying Heroes, and maybe it's partly because I don't have a whole lot of comparisons to make, show-wise.
I didn't have the unreasonable expectation that Veronica Mars was going to 'save Heroes,' so I didn't feel crushing despair when she was just another fleeting occurrence on the show. Nor do I feel compelled to endlessly compare and contrast Heroes to Lost (which I've never seen). I don't squeal about 'Jess' every time Peter appears on the screen since I've never seen Gilmore Girls, either. (Although, Milo Ventimiglia is worth a few squeals, all on his own.)
So, I'm enjoying this season, mostly, though I wish the writers were a bit less heavy-handed. In their efforts to establish moral ambiguity in Mohinder and Bob, especially, they've turned them from characters into caricatures. And speaking of such, I half expect Sylar to start talking to the camera, Ferris Bueller style. Zachary Quinto is a great actor - it's almost criminal to stick him in the almost criminally stupid, boring, and lame storyline he's trapped in. I hope they save him soon.
(I've seen a few people looking for a Magneto-type storyline and that'd be nice. I wouldn't even mind them ripping off X-Men to do it. If they must steal ideas, at least let them steal the good ones.)
-
17
Oh no, I didn't proof read enough either. Darn me to heck.
-

I'm late, this week was full of real life demands and I just now watched Heroes. Thank God for Tivo.
@Nat x: chill. @James: if you install the Google Toolbar into your browser it auto-spell corrects any text box. It just told me "Toolbar" is spelled wrong. And "Tivo". I couldn't live without it.
@Laurie: You poor girl. Clooney may have been good on ER but watching Heroes when you've never watched Lost is like Wimpy arguing that, while he's never tried it, a hamburger must be almost as good as filet mignon.
@Chaddog: Good theory. I was starting to think West was evil too. I was vaguely hoping that he'd turn out to be another illegitimate Nate child and therefore Claire's brother but that might be a little too Maury for the show.
Is it just me or is there nothing as eerie as the Haitian with his popped collar and far-away stare?
