Vacation Robo-Post: It's One of the Top 10 Most Wonderful Times of the Year...

It will not surprise you that I am starting to work on a top 10 TV list for 2007. The top 10 reasons that it will not surprise you...

1. I work for a magazine.
2. That's what magazines do.
3. And even though you may hate to admit it.
4. Magazines know you.
5. They realize that it is almost impossible to stop reading information.
6. When it is presented in numbered list form.
7. Even a stupid list.
8. Especially a stupid list.
9. Like this one.
10. See?

Actually, as I've done once or twice before, I'm doing two top-10 lists: one for new shows that premiered in 2007, one for returning shows. The theory is (a) when you combine returning with new shows, it's hard for newbies to crack the list, and (b) that way you get another list. But you could argue that that's wimping out, and that one list should cover everything.

So I'll leave it up to you. What's your list--and/or lists--of the top 10 shows of the top 10 TV shows of the year? Yes, I know it's early, but don't worry; we've got plenty of time to milk this topic again in December. And with this out of the way, you'll have so much more time for Christmas shopping!

Frankly, I do not eny your task of coming up with a list of TEN new shows, given the largely dismal crop of 2007 (further compromised by the writers' strike, which has robbed some series of the opportunity to grow creatively). I don't actually have a list for you, of new or returning series; this is simply my attempt to commiserate with your predicament, if it is such.

  • 12

    Mad Men
    30 Rock
    Lost
    Colbert Report
    Pushing Daisies
    Ugly Betty
    Project Runway
    Doctor Who
    Dexter
    Rome

  • 13

Pushing Daisies is the most original TV show I have seen in decades.

Chuck (the TV show) is fun to watch, mostly because the actors and actresses playing the lead characters are all drop dead gorgeous.

Chuck (the character) on Pushing Daisies is also drop dead gorgeous. It is gratifying to see Kristen Chenowith FINALLY find a TV role that uses her amazing talents.

there aren't enough good new shows to justify a top ten, so here's my top 17 list.
    1. LOST
    2. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

    4. CALIFORNICATION
    5. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
    6. SPOOKS / MI-5
    7. 30 ROCK
    8. MY NAME IS EARL
    9. THE AMAZING RACE
    10. EXTRAS

    15. NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE
    16. CHUCK
    17. JOURNEYMAN

Whilst I appriciate it may not be a popular choice I would like to nominate Studio 60 as one of the best short lived shows of the year!
Californication would come a close second.
30 Rock would be in third.

  • 16

    1. Battlestar Galactica
    2. The Wire
    3. The Office
    4. Colbert Report
    5. Dexter
    6. 30 Rock
    7. South Park
    8. Reaper
    9. Ugly Betty
    10. Aliens in America

(And while I haven't seen Rome or Mad Men, I definitely plan to because they look great.)

  • 17

Only one "must see" show for me this year: 30 Rock.

  • 18

I don't watch 10 shows regularly enough to rate them, but I will put in my 2 cents that Chuck is phenomenal. I never thought a TV show would keep me watching on chick-flick credentials alone, and the nerd who's a secret agent with all the Bryce stuff in the background is all gravy.

Flight of the Concords accomplishes something that Television has been attempting make work for decades. It is a musical comedy television show. People love narrative comedy...and they love music. This show melds the two in a way that just...works.

Duchovny should get most improved actor for his work in Californication. Light years beyond what he did in X-Files. The writing and direction is top notch and while some of the supporting actors are less then talented...you can actually sense them trying to keep up with Duchovny. He seems totally relaxed in his character.

The The TiVo Guy episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm is something I have never seen before in a narrative television series. Art imitating life...and being topically effected by life. It is amazing to think that Larry's TV show friends are the same as his real friends...and they are affected by his real divorce...but still able to make light of it. It was like watching Larry David's life through a slightly warped mirror...fascinating.

    1. Flight of the Concords
    2. Californication
    3. Curb Your Enthusiasm.
    4. Rome
    5. So You Think You Can Dance
