Dead Electron Alert: Making a List, Checking It Twice

EVERETT
Now live on time.com: that list of great holiday TV programs that I told you I was working on earlier. Happy last day of November!
You might ask, James, do you honestly think these are the greatest holiday shows of all time? And I would answer, well, sorta. It's a list of seven memorable, distinctive holiday TV treats. (Why seven, you ask? Because time.com asked me, "Do you think you could do a list of, say, seven to ten holiday specials for us?" And being the hard-working writer I am, I replied, "Why yes, seven! Seven would be exactly perfect!")
But it's more a tally of personal favorites than a carved-in-stone all-time greatest list. So it's subjective and impressionistic. I didn't go back and--as I did when doing my top-100 TV shows list--exhaustively watch archival episodes to be sure there was nothing I considered better than the Festivus episode of Seinfeld. But that is the holiday episode I have the fondest memories of, in part because it was about a holiday other than Christmas. (Forgive me, KwanzaaBot.) It's just my list, and if you don't like it you can kiss my, um, mistletoe.
I will note that I left off holiday movies that rerun on TV--you have to go here for my take on them--because I didn't want to get into the business of refereeing an entire additional genre. And I pretty much punted on selecting a favorite version of Christmas Carol (not a personal favorite to begin with)--but I will piss off the Muppet fans and admit that, if I had an 8th choice, it would have been Mr. Magoo.
Go read it, and feel free to pelt me with cheese balls and holly berries.

My favorite Christmas episodes of TV shows:
Bones: The Man in the Fallout Shelter, The Santa In The Slush (Bones always does Christmas really well)
Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Amends
Seinfeld: The one with Festivus
How I Met Your Mother: How Lily Stole Christmas
Smallville: Lexmas
The Office: A Benihana Christmas
South Park: Mr Hanky, The Christmas Poo
Beavis and Butt-head: A Very Special Christmas with Beavis and Butthead

Good stuff, although Santa Claus is Coming to Town is my favorite of the Rankin-Bass specials. When I was a kid we had it on tape and we would keep replaying the part where Burgermeister Meisterburger says "A yo-yo?" And, as Wikipedia tells us, "The Burgermeister Meisterburger is symbolic of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi reign of Germany and western Europe in the 1940's." I love that so many kids shows and movies subliminally taught you to hate Germans and Russians. In sixth grade we had an exchange student with a German accent and I punched him in the face just out of habit.
And this might be one of my Generation Y/"Echo Boomer" deficiencies, but I've never heard of the Yule Log channel. Do they have it on YouTube? (er "YuleTube"?)

i was never a big fan of Mr. Hanky.
My favorite South Park Xmas is "Christmas in Canada?" Overall, the episode was hilarious. It's too bad the boys didn't get to have their Christmas adventure. lol.
As for non-Christmas tv episodes, how 'bout Friends and the Holiday Armadillo? "If Santa and the Holiday Armadillo are ever in the same room for too long, the universe will implode. Merry Christmas!"

4
Simpsons first season episode where Homer works as dept. store Santa and family adopts their dog, Santa's Little Helper.

I thought these were supposed to be "essential holiday programs."
The Bowie/Bing duet is a great "christmas moment", but that doesn't make the whole program great (As a star driven Xmas special, Judy Garland's was far better as a whole)
--and your last three don't even come close to making the list. The Festivus show simply does not belong on the list as "essential" holiday viewing.
And while I love the South Park's "The Spirit of Christmas", it really isn't a holiday tradition -- its tough to find anywhere. Mr. Hanky The Christmas Poo would be a much better choice, because it manages to be both satirical and maintain the "Christmas Spirit". (I personally prefer "Woodland Christmas Critters", but that is way too dark to be "essential.")
And the "Yule Log"?!?! I mean, get serious.
I agree with Chas -- the Simpson's episode deserves a place on the list.
As does your eighth choice, Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol.
And perhaps Amahl and the Night Visitor..

Ok seriously folks who don't know about the yule log, it can still be found on christmas on some of the randomer local stations, although many ruin it by playing songs:

You are a sorry bunch!
There is not a single mention of why we celebrate the birth of out Savior and Lord "Jesus Christ".
Christ came to save you from your sins and your eyes and hearts are hardened.
May God have mercy on your souls. Our Nation sinks deeper in the secular mire.
Praise God in the Highest.

For my money, nothing beats the Claymation Christmas special--put it back on TV! I do also love Santa Claus is Coming to Town and I agree w/ Vinny C. about Friends--that would make my top 7 list!
