Robo-Post: Minutes to Midnight

What do I, a professional TV critic, watch on New Year's Eve? The inside of my eyelids. I pride myself on passing out well before the stroke of midnight these days, partly from parental exhaustion, partly because Mrs. Tuned In and I throw a New Year's Day Open House and I need to wake up and cook, and partly because I hate New Year's Eve TV. Dick Clark, Carson Daly, MTV, VH1--I just can't stand the forced jollity of it all. (Although I remember flipping the channels just after midnight on Millennium Eve 2000 and seeing two Weather Channel anchors with party hats and noisemakers. Good times!)

Am I missing something? Do you have a favorite Auld Lang Syne TV hangout? Or are you saving it all up for the Rose Parade on HGTV?

I usually do something that would otherwise be fun, but is crushed under the expectation that it will be The Most Fun Party Of The Year.

This year I'm in Dunedin, New Zealand, a little college town about 1,000 miles in each direction from civilization, so I'm doing the eyelids thing, too, I guess. Either that or go to the town square and watch the Mika cover band that was practicing earlier...

Eyelids. New Years Eve is amateur hour out at the bars, and TV is pretty terrible. Last year, I set up Quicken on my computer so I could start the New Year in good financial health. I imagine I'll do something similarly "good" for my outlook on 2008 this year...

@James - Too heck with New Years Eve. What is your address and what time does the open house start?

@ Chaddogg-Ooooo! Good idea! I may just have to do that myself.

As for me? I'll be cleaning my apartment and hopefully watching for fireworks over Manhattan. Always good to start the new year off on a clean clutter free foot!

I was in New York -- Times Square, to be exact -- yesterday afternoon. I scurried out of town and back home to Boston just in time to...watch the Times Square ball drop on TV.

I can't really figure out why the networks even bother - they are not really promoting shows, showcasing talent and probably not pulling much of a number once you divide the audience of (myself included) loser shuti-ins among the participating networks and cable shows. I guess CBS agrees by airing Letterman re-runs.
