Remembering Sarah Palin
It's not that Sarah Palin didn't want to make herself more available for mainstream media interviews. It was just that, when you're in the middle of running for vice president, who has time for that kind of thing?
Now that that bit of business is over, however, Palin has become a regular camera hound. Last night, Fox News aired an extensive interview with Greta Van Susteren, in which Palin discussed her possible Presidential plans for 2012:
This is what I always do. I'm like, "God, if there is an open door for me somewhere"--this is what I always pray--"don't let me miss the open door. Show me the open door and even if it's just cracked a little bit, maybe I'll plow right on through that, maybe prematurely plow through it, but don't let me miss an open door." And if there is an open door in '12, or four years later, and if it's something that's going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door.
Meanwhile, she's plowing into our TV news screens with a vengeance. Palin was on the Today Show with Matt Lauer this morning. Later she talks with both Wolf Blitzer and Larry King of CNN.
The reason for the interviews is pretty obvious, as the Van Susteren interview quote indicates: enhancing her image for a possible Presidential run next time out, or at least burnishing her status as a party leader. But why now? After all, the campaign is still very recent and some of the lingering questions pretty hot. (Lauer, for instance, asked Palin about some of the charges of runaway wardrobe spending, some of which she denied as false, others of which she not-quite-denied by instead attacking her critics as anonymous chickens.) Why not lay low?
While Palin may have years, or at least long months, to plan her next move, she'll only have the white-hot pop-cultural attention—already starting to cool—for a while longer. That leaves this as her best chance to make voters' last memory of her, before her eventual re-introduction, as a positive one: a scrapper, a go-getter, a charismatic folksy pol (hence all the interviews in her kitchen with the family) who was in no way to blame for the McCain-Palin ticket's loss.
That, whatever she thinks of the mainstream media, takes mainstream media attention to correct. And she needs to plow through that door while it's still open a crack.

Grr...Sarah Palin needs to go away. Her most striking flaw is her insincerity, and everything she says in public now just spotlights that.
-
2
I understand why Sarah Palin is putting herself out there, but I am completely befuddled at why the tv media are bothering.
.
We know there is no particular demand for information regarding the Alaskan gov ( who was the state's top executive before Palin?), is the market for losing vice presidential canidates that strong? -
3
Hmmm...isn't she supposed to be doing something else? Like governing Alaska?

It needs to be said:
.
Chuck has been the best show on television this season. Last night's episode continued the trend.

@chaddogg: I wasn't nuts about HIMYM last night, but I'll have a post up about it later.

I forced myself to sit through the entire Fox News interview and was reminded about why I can't stand Sarah Palin. Can the woman not string together one coherent sentence? And make no mistake, that "interview" was just a puff piece. Greta didn't ask Palin any probing questions, didn't challenge Palin when she was clearly contradicting herself. No, Greta just let Palin go on and on. Anyone can sit around and talk about themselves. Did it do anything to help Palin's reputation with the people who disagree with her or don't like her? I doubt it. If you love her you still will, if not, your opinion likely wouldn't be changed by this "interview".
-
7
So some of you think Palin is running around asking for all these interviews?
Palin 2012. This will be your next President when the Obama train wreck is over...
-
8
Too little, too late, too trite. BTW did she have anything to wear?
-

If Palin is the best the republicans got - they aren't going to the white house in 2012. If anything this looks more like the whig party, except the whigs at least accomplished their goals. I'm surprised the base is so enthusiastic about her, it's kind of embarrassing really.

The anonymous internet users are what really shellacked Palin in this last election. Every snafu and gaffe she made was blared throughout the loudspeakers of the web at a million decibels, her mistakes (some might even call it "pure, unadulterated idiocy") on infinite repeats. The internet has stepped up and shown the world that its not just losers sitting home surfing for porn; they probably did more to take down the McCain-Palin campaign than the "liberal mainstream media." TIME, for instance, as well as many other "mainstream" news sites, often linked to YouTube for some of their (admittedly humorous) political insight.
That said, I think if Palin steps on the campaign podium again, I truly believe the internet will tear her down again. The thing is, she could barely handle the scrutiny running for VP... imagine what would happen if she ran for President?

Ugh. I've seen enough of Sarah Palin for a lifetime. I'm not wasting any more brain cells worrying about her right now.
.
In other news, I thought that T:TSCC had an exciting, entertaining episode last nite. I'm really digging the direction choices for TSCC this season - the shots, angles, music have been really interesting - and last nite was a very well-put-together episode. The piecemeal revelation of the big picture worked well, it was one of the best episodes of the season, I thought. MAYBE SPOILER ALERT? There was development on the John-Riley front (although I'm having trouble sussing out the extent to which they do or do not have a physical relationship, the show is being kinda vague and I'm not sure if they're being intentionally vague, or if I'm just waaaay slow to catch on), several awesome shootout scenes, and a believable breakdown for Sarah there at the end - it all worked. And the scene with John and Cameron in bed ("I know how lonely it is to be John Conner") was all kinds of creepy and sexy at the same time. Mr. Shara Says and I agree that she should wear daisy dukes and undershirts more often ("I don't like how he responds to you. . ." hee hee). I like this show more every week, and other than Supernatural its the show that I most look forward to. I hope that Chrome Artie returns at some point, he was definitely a worthy adversary who got more interesting the more we saw of him - this week and last week were really good showcase episodes for him. I want more Charley Dixon, also. I dunno where he's gotten to, but he brings a lot to the show and I wish he was around more. Now that he's Not Penny's Husband anymore, he can continue to crush on Sarah without as much interference (although I imagine the guilt that he's carrying around is rather burdensome).
.
I really enjoyed Heroes too - but then again I'm obviously a fangirl. Every week Mr. Shara Says and I say "OMG, that was awesome! Yea!!! Surely nobody could complain about that episode!" and then I check the blogs the next morning and am always surprised. But it seemed that the character reveals served to make all the folks showcased more interesting, more well-rounded characters. It answered questions, provided interesting insights, and FINALLY gave Kristen Bell something decent to work with. This was probably the very first episode with her in it where I felt that the story/dialogue was worthy of her talents. Then, it brought the whole story full circle. I thought it was definitely a step in the right direction. Not a lot of plot happened, but it focused on the characters and the conflicts they face, and that was always my favorite part of the show anyway. -

@brainh: Welcome to the 21st century. You are right that if she couldn't hack the VP slot in a campaign,/i., there's no way she could handle the presidency. But there was great hubris in the idea that they could manage the message when the Bush presidency had shown the American people that they can be bamboozled by that strategy.
-

Sarah Palin couldn't handle the scrutiny as a VP candidate, and she certainly won't be able to handle it as a Pres. candidate. Can you imagine if she had to go through all of the debates that Pres. Elect and Sen. McCain went through.
.
She simply has risen to her own level of incompetency. Whether she is good for Alaska is still, as yet an open question. Let's see how she does when oil prices go down and her folks are receiving stimulus checks anymore. Let's see how she does when those pork-barrel bridges to nowhere stop be being appropriated.
.
Folks, Sarah Palin is in way over her head, and boy, will her supporters be surprised to see her break down under pressure over 22 months on the campaign trail. I don't think she'll find the type of support that she will need to win. She's going to head-fake like she wants to be president, but look for her to be doing a book deal or an occassional television show. And ask yourself one more thing, why is it that unlike Tim Kaine, Kathleen Sebilius, Newt Gingrich, Chuck Hagel, Tom Coburn, all tough politicians she can't or is never asked to actually sit in and have a discussion on Meet-The-Press, etc. There are no follow-up questions. There are no tough situations. She is simply out of her league. The sooner she and her supporters get that fact then the better off the Republican party will be. They just like her plain-spokenness, but they discount her lack of intellectual curiosity, her inability to engage in complex argument, etc. What is the most sophisticated writing product of Sarah Palin? My friends, Presidents are elected for their ability to handle pressure, analyze difficult problems, make coherent rational decisions and communicate to the American people and the world. Period. Sarah Palin has not provided any evidence that she is capable of such a feat. -

Sarah Palin will not make it to the White House because she is too controversial of a character for the GOP to support at this stage. The GOP was incredibly weakened by the recent election, and members have began to argue amongst themselves. If it is to gain strength, it needs a figure that everyone in the party can support. Sarah Palin is not that leader. She has vast appeal to the evangelical right, but doesnt have much support outside that base, including the more moderate republicans responsible for choosing candidates in the primaries. This is in addition to her lack of knowledge of basic economic and governmental principles. Additionally, whether it is true or not, Palin now has a widespread "diva" image, which is deadly to anyone looking for high political office.

The media fascination with Palin is all about advertising dollars. Advertisers know that viewers can't resist watching a public spectacle.
@reality123: aahhhhhhhh-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaaaa. Good one! -

is the market for losing vice presidential canidates that strong?
uh, yes. Generally, the losing VP candidate is considered a "front-runner" for the presidency in the next election cycle.
And while in most cases they crash and burn before they get the nomination (think Muskie, Quayle, Kemp, Lieberman, Edwards) occasionally they do get the nomination (Mondale, and eventually, Dole).
Personally, I think that Palin is going to be a major player in 2012 if she wants to be --- she may have been unprepared for the Vice Presidency a week after she was picked by McCain -- but Barack Obama was completely unprepared to be President a week after he announced his candidacy -- but after two years of media adoration (and ignoring his lack of experience and knowledge) he became a 'credible" candidate. There is no reason that Palin can't achieve the same transformation by the time 2012 rolls around.
Palin's not stupid -- she just wasn't ready for the Village media shredder to which James and his cohorts subject anyone who isn't pre-approved by the Villagers. Biden was just as gaffe-prone, and just as isolated from the media, as Palin was -- but Biden is beloved by DC/NY media axis, so he go a pass while Palin was vilified relentlessly.

Just counting down the days until that Sarah Palin - Paris Hilton reality show hits the air....

As a Democrat, I think that Sarah Palin is absolutely wonderful.
Not only does she provide great material that has made Saturday
Night Live funnier than it has been in 20 years, but she threatens
to reduce the Republican Party to the party of only a few ignorant
dogmatic racist hicks in the backwoods. The best thing that can happen for President Obama is for Sarah Palin to get the Republican nomination in 2012. Well, actually, that is the second-best thing. A Sarah Palin -- Paris Hilton ticket would be even better. And Saturday Night Live would go crazy.
And Tina Fay would get an Emmy. -

First Blog Ever-Very long . I had a lot to get off my chest.
Palin Analysis: This election year has been an eye opener! You spend day to day with neighbors, co-workers, and the general public and do not realize how polar opposite our views are until they are challenged and exposed in conversation, the media, the internet (!), etc., as they have this year. I do not understand the immediate hate and disrespect for another human being/ fellow American, that has had minimal exposure and time to "prove" herself, that has been demonstrated this year in our nation and continues. I understand disagreeing and not wanting her to be elected, but the steps taken to try to totally destroy this woman's reputation and record within days was astounding. To me Sarah Palin's message comes with a lot of conviction and truth and that is why people have an immediate response and opinion of her. Love or hate! The life choices, policies, and decisions she has made are based on the principle of "a life of accountabiliy" (my quote) How many of us live that way? Examples: In our marriages/ relationships- being faithful, in business- ethical and morally right choices, and daily answering to a cause (or a call in your life) that is bigger than you, no matter how hard it is to stand up for or how it might make you look! This "life of accountability" rejection feeling you may be feeling is the same feeling you get when you here a pastor, or see or hear the bible, or feel challenged on your belief system by someone. As I do at times.
The Alternative:
Life without accountability: Hollywood tells you live it up, have multiple partners, cheat on your spouse, satisfy every desire you have, no matter the consequence! The far left tells you no matter what ,you DESERVE what everyone else has or at least a piece of it, (honestly apply that in your life or at least invision it and see if we would be better off!) And the most controversial point of all- making the "choice" to have intimate relations, (that we all know creates life <bird's and the bees ,remember?) and having the dispicable audacity to make the "choice" to terminate life because it would be a "life of accountabilty", and incovenient.NOW--I realize not every democrat or celebrity has the same views, faith, or life experiences---BUT--- niether does every Republican or Sarah Palin.
Try to see life from others point of view and don't always be so quick to judge, they may have something extraordinary to offer our world. And don't look to PEOPLE as your God or messenger, seek what convicts you and why. I admire Sarah Palin, but I do not look at her as a celebrity or someone with all the answers. She seems to be someone that lives a "life of accountability" and I trust people like that.-- which leads to my next blog and my blog name, STUNNNEDBYTHEHYPE: Topic- Obama

Ditto 'stunnedbythehype'! I'm also stunned by Americans I've met who say arrogant, deflammatory statements about a Governor(as they admit later in conversation) they never took the time to research. Palins's accomplishments and advancements made in Alaska during her watch to-date far out weigh anything accomplished by Senator Obama to-date. The duties and responsibilities of this executive position is notably different that most of the lower 49 as well. After reading several articles via this media about McCain/Palin it is clear that it is much easier to be tear down than to build and too many who respond haven't done their homework and absorb much of what they read as gospel. I find it also interesting many of the same find it difficult know what sincerity, integrity and truth is...even when it's in their face! How unfortunate that many Americans would rather 'dog' someone or something only because someone else does. Rather high-school, isn't it?

I for one prefer to forget about Sarah Palin. Please go back to Alaska, and fade out of the spotlight ASAP!
