TV Poll: No Such Thing As a Second Chance?

Apropos ABC's remake of Cupid, joethefinancier writes:

On one hand, I'm glad that Cupid is getting a second chance, on the other hand, I'm almost positive that this version is going to be the Knightrider remake all over again. Bobby Cannavale is NO Jeremy Piven, and I will have to reserve my opinion on Sarah Paulson, but Paula Marshall set a pretty high bar. And can the writing be the same quality? What's next for TV Primetime remakes? Hillstreet Blues? Golden Girls? Sports Night?

Sounds like a TV Poll! But let's make it a little more specific. Seems to me you could distinguish between the 90210 / Knight Rider school of remake (new versions of past successful shows) and the Cupid school (second tries at past not-so-successful shows).

Let's look at the latter. What brilliant-but-canceled show would you like to see remade? Freaks and Geeks is perhaps my favorite such show of all time, but I'm not sure I could bear a remake, even if creator Paul Feig (now a producer on The Office) could be brought back. (Forget Judd Apatow, but my fellow Michigander Feig conceived the show and the characters.) That show was so dependent on the outstanding casting that I'm afraid even a faithful remake would seem like an abomination.

On the other hand, I could see, for instance, a second shot at EZ Streets, which I also loved but I think could survive the re-casting of Ken Olin and Joey Pants. Likewise, I could go for the return of Wonderland (not Wonderfalls), the 2000 ABC Peter Berg drama set at a mental hospital... if any network were, as it were, crazy enough to try it.

Your candidates?

Tenspeed and Brownshoe. Hopefully, with Jeff Goldblum in the mix. Maybe not reprising his original character, but...

Are we limited to shows canceled in their first season?
    .
My pick would be American Gothic.

  • 3

hmm, interesting question, while there are shows that I wish hadn't been cancelled, but I don't necessarily want them to be given a second chance because either the cast will be old and possibly not funny (if a comedy) or possibly not the same chemistry or if its a remake with a new cast, I just don't see lighting striking twice on the excellent show factor.

That said, giving Arrested Development a second chance either through a movie or show (but they must have the same cast) would make me happy.

Going to side with Ashman: assuming one season or less only, I'd go with American Gothic (though didn't Fox do a midseason show with essentially the same concept recently?).

Snarky runner-up: Someone beats the importance out of Sorkin and puts him to work on a Sports Night remake.

In the one season or less vein, I always like the premise (if not the execution) of Jack & Bobby -- the idea that we were watching a major future President of the United States grow up, all the while learning of some of his great triumphs and political defeats in the future via flashforwards. Plus it seemed to have a successful idea, mixing the idealism of the West Wing with CW (or was it WB then) teen drama.
    .
I also liked the chemistry between Rosemarie DeWitt and Ron Livingston on Standoff.
    .
As for other shows, you of course have to go into the Arrested Development/Veronica Mars well of shows cancelled cruelly before their time...

Now wanting to get into semantics, but if you maintain the same cast (as would be necessary for Arrested Development/Veronica Mars/Firefly/etc) then it is so much of a remake as a, I don't know, return to television. The current Family Guy is not a remake of the 2000 Family Guy. It is the same show that was canceled, it just sort of came back.
    .
There are a lot of canceled shows I would love to see return, but most of them would require all, or nearly all, of the cast to return as well. This makes their return unlikely. Top of that list is Deadwood.
    .
@Tom Shaw, I think you are referencing Point Pleasant of 2005? Which certainly has some thematic parallels, but wasn't nearly as good.

Haha, yeah Ashman, guess that's "-10, didn't answer the question" to me, but I also tend not to watch the first season's on shows or at least not until I stumble upon them midseason so I don't really have any good answer for that single season shows that should be remade.

    I vote for Firefly!

    @ Tom Shaw

Agreed on Sports Night. Not that I'm not looking forward to the Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Musical, that he is supposedly writing, but I do miss his TV writing. Aaron Sorkin needs to get back on the acid, shrooms, qualuudes and cocaine (but needs to learn to leave them at home when he goes the airport. Seriously who does that?) and start churning out Sports Night scripts again. After all, we never found out if CSC was acquired by Quo Vadimus or if Casey and Dana would never stop dancing around and get busy already. Damn, that was such a great cast of characters. Now you've made me go all nostalgic.

I'm just glad you brought up Wonderland, because I loved that show and on the rare occasions it's remembered by anyone, it gets criticized!

  • 11

I second being happy to hear that Wonderland is remembered. I read somewhere that the first six episodes were shot before it was canceled, I've always known there was no way that it could ever be put out on DVD but I now can hope that it will somehow end up on the internet.

I would like to see Nothing Sacred brought back. I think more than ever it could say interesting things about the state of our society. And I also think that Karen Sisco and Maximum Bob were sharp, clever adult shows that never got a chance to grow an audience.

Speaking of remakes, saw this at imdb.

    Stamos Plans Full House Remake
    4 December 2008 10:59 AM, PST

The cast of 90s U.S. sitcom Full House is planning to return to the small screen in an up-to-date version of the show that launched the careers of the Olsen Twins.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen found fame sharing the role of little Michelle Elizabeth Tanner in the comedy, which ran from 1987 to 1995.

It also made stars out of castmembers Bob Saget, John Stamos, Jodie Sweetin, Dave Coulier and Candace Cameron Bure.

And Stamos is plotting to reunite at least some of the cast for a "semi-remake".

Cameron Bure tells Ok! magazine, "John has been working on a semi-remake of Full House.

"I know it would involve me and Jodie Sweetin. We would revive our characters, but today as young women."

The only show I want to come back is The Dresden Files, but not remade, just not be cancelled anymore.

The only show I can think of that I wouldn't being remade would be Dr. Quinn, MD.
