Long ago, before my time, the networks used to pay--and pay for lodging, expenses, etc. This created an obvious conflict situation, and the TCA dropped the arrangement. I have a few times while at Time but not regularly; it tends to draw more newspaper writers (who file daily, do interviews with hometown talent, etc.) and LA-based journalists. Time actually offered to send me this time, but for various boring reasons it didn't work with my schedule. Maybe the summer tour. No magazine goes out of its way to spend money nowadays, of course, but--not to exaggerate the importance of the TV beat--it's a pittance next to putting someone on a campaign plane. @plukasiak: multi-part answer.
