Air Peacock: NBC Finds Last Captive Audience
Time Inc. has a corporate-travel deal with American Airlines, which, in the old days, used to mean that, when I would fly out to L.A. for an interview or set visit, I would finally catch up on Everybody Loves Raymond, via the CBS-produced in-flight entertainment for AA.
Now NBC Universal has announced a deal that may find me confronting Knight Rider or Crusoe on future coastal business trips, should they (or I) last so long. NBCU has contracted with American to provide 90-minute TV-and-film segments, putting Ben Silverman's programming in front of a valuable audience who can't dive for the exits.
But how many people actually pay attention to inflight entertainment reels anymore? Airline amusement is more a la carte now than it used to be. The last time I flew American, in December, I spent the entire flight immersed on my self-provided screens as long as battery life would allow: first my iPhone, then my laptop, on which I surfed the Internet on the optional in-flight wi-fi, at least on the one leg of the trip when it worked.
Personally I'd take wireless service (even at the discounted charge of about $10 a pop) over an inflight movie or sitcom anyday, supplemented by my own DVDs. Then again, I'm one of those obnoxious people who brings along my own elaborate homemade sandwiches whenever I fly. (Returning from L.A., I have been known to buy a couple animal-style In-N-Out burgers and stash them in my carry-on, safe food handling be damned.)
Beyond that, I enjoy the seatback TV in JetBlue when I'm able to fly it, but I'm sure NBC prefers that American flyers not have more options to tune elsewhere. (They have that problem bad enough when it comes to terrestrial TV watching.) As for the rest of you: what do you like to do for in-flight entertainment?

On a short flight like NYC to LA I generally just read a book. I am not a big reader, and flying is one of the few places where book is my go time-passer (the other is courthouse, the last bastion of the luddites). I always have my laptop with me, but I generally just use it in the waiting to board segments of travel. If I ever break down and get good headphones, then maybe I would watch more dvds in flight.
.
Do you have like super fancy tv critic headphones that use with your laptop? The sound is always off when I try and listen on a plane.
.
A quirky problem I have run into is that I no longer buy dvds, I've moved on to all Blu-Ray for home entertainment, which means I need to either get a blu-ray laptop (which I don't think exist at a reasonable price just yet), by dvds just for flying, or revisit something I've seen a bunch which. Not great options, so I read a book.
.
For international flights across the Atlantic, I pretty much always end up watching the in-flight entertainment. Which is a movie featuring dogs like 1000% of the time. I have specifically not gone and seen Marley and Me, because I just know I am going to see it a few months from now on a trip to Japan or something. -

I usually go with books too, it's nice that they're not battery-dependent. And I'll get so absorbed in a good book that it really makes the time pass in a way that TV or movies can't.

I forget which airline it was, but about five years ago I remember watching an NBC package. I learned that Becker was just as awful at 20,000 feet as it is on the ground. I'm guessing the same is true for Kath and Kim or Knight Rider. -

If there's a movie, I'll probably watch (that's how I caught Fey's Baby Mama). Otherwise, I'm either reading or trying to sleep with my earbuds in (usually listening to Harry Potter).

I just bought a netbook in anticipation of a couple flights in February and March (and for easy reference to IMDB, etc., while watching TV)--I'd gladly spend $10 for on-board wireless. The movies are almost NEVER anything I'd want to see.
But, more importantly, I'm disappointed to learn that James is one of those people who bring fast food on the plane. The people sitting around you don't want to be forced to smell that, James. It can be really nauseating in such a small space.

I don't fly all that much, but the last couple times I flew I did the same thing: enjoy the ascent, lose myself in my imagination while I stare out the window, then burn out the battery on the laptop. If there's still time in the flight, I'll pull out a fun book for easy reading. I tried reading semi-deep theology on a plane once... yeesh. Eventually, my head did stop spinning.

What? I'm kinda confused, why would you have anything to do with Crusoe? It has like 2 episodes left. Speaking of Crusoe, how dare they end Saturday's ep with such a cliffhanger!

What's with the hate against NBC? You do know that ratings doesn't equate to quality? While Knight Rider and Crusoe are certainly crappy shows, CBS's lineup is filled with unadulterated dreck. ABC is only slightly better. All the while, NBC has shows like 30 Rock, Chuck, Friday Night Lights, Heroes, Life, My Own Worst Enemy (while cancelled, this show is still better than most of CBS and ABC lineup), and The Office. Most of CBS and ABC's shows can't compare, even if they trounce in the ratings.

What I do... 1) read the newspaper - the one they print on paper. 2) clean out my email. 3)Listen to/watch on ipod. 4) Maybe watch a movie if there is an in-seat screen; never on the horrible projection you have to crane your neck around someone's giant head to see. Definitely would not watch a network sitcom of Travel Channel show.
