Lost Is a Hit Online, Even When Off-Air

Nielsen reports some figures this morning on the most popular TV shows streamed online from network websites. In December, the ratings company says, Grey's Anatomy was the third-most streamed show, with 879,000 unique viewers. Maybe a bit surprising, since Grey's does not get online buzz in proportion to its network ratings, but it's a big show nonetheless.

Second place: Saturday Night Live, with 1.1 million. Not a shock, since SNL has done a good job leveraging itself online. (As has been reported, and as I note in a piece about  online TV in the next TIME, more people saw Tina Fey imitate Sarah Palin online than on TV.)

In first place is Lost, with 1.4 million viewers. A good finish, when you consider that it's far from the top-rated show on TV. But again, not unexpected, since it has such an Internet following. Until you consider that in December, Lost was not even running new episodes: that was entirely catch-up viewing.

Or was it people watching future episodes of Lost in the past? I'm getting a nosebleed.

The most surprising thing about this is that out of those three shows, Lost is the one to have more of a niche audience. Anyone can watch Grey's Anatomy or SNL and enjoy it for its brief hour of drama or comedy, but Lost has so much history and storyline that to find an audience that large seems pretty amazing. Maybe Smokey is prowling the Internet, finding people's wandering minds and dragging it back kicking and screaming to the temple of Lost online...with all limbs intact.

Then why are you posting under Tom Shaw and not Dave Shaw?

LOST on ABC.Com is AWESOME - this news surprises me absolutely zero. I watched all Lost episodes leading up to the 3rd or so episode in S4 on ABC.com in HD with excellent audio and gorgeous picture.. MUCH better than my 20 inch picture-tube TV at home.

Literally, I am almost (ALMOST) tempted to skip watching the night it airs and watch the next day online because I enjoy it more.
