Vacation Robo-Post: How's Your News?
As you see, I have not posted a Lost review this morning. (The time.com honchos say they plan to have a guest poster review, so if it hasn't gone up yet, be patient. If all goes according to plan, I will not be watching until tonight on TiVo, so I'll be avoiding the comments until then.)
One side effect of writing my Lost posts Wednesday night lately, though, is that I end up catching the local news at 11 while I'm finishing up. I rarely watch local news (except for cable's NY1), so it's been interesting to see what's changed about it. Namely: nothing, except that it now seems to consist of about 50% Weird Crap That Someone Caught on Camera and Posted on YouTube. To be fair, cable news does its share of this too, but local news seems to have positively fallen in love with YouTube amateur video as filler. We talk a lot about online sites pirating network video, but it's nice to see there's a venue where old-fashioned TV can return the favor.
But local news has always been an easy target. Maybe I'm being too harsh, or painting with too broad a brush. So my Robo question of the day: do any Tuned Inlanders watch your local newscasts? Do you have anything good to say about them?

I only semi-regularly watch morning news, because the stories are quick, and there are frequent breaks for traffic and weather. But when I watch the 5 or 6:00 news in the evening, there isn't too much filler, though I rarely watch the 10:00 news (Central time, btw).

James, I was hoping your post was going to be about MTV's strange, yet intriguing show, How's Your News? I can't help but watch it and fall in love with the reporters, especially when they're being dragged around with John Stamos, learning how to pick up girls.
.
But to your original questions, I barely watch the local news, if ever. The local news has become a parade of murder, politics, and crime, so pretty much everything you see in Gotham pre-Batman. I'm much more likely to sort through online news sources to find actual substance, instead of waste away in front of Supertan 1 and Supertanner 2. -

I sometimes watched the local news in Chicago, but, since I moved to LA, I almost never do--they lost me the night that Britney shaved her head, and it got wall-to-wall coverage. The few times I've caught snippets here, it's reminded me of the "news" clips they would sometimes show on "Arrested Development." Besides rarely covering actual news, the local news shows seem very dated, very Ron Burgundy.

BTW, it's not just local news that uses You Tube video. I'm always amazed when I see CNN showing You Tube clips, especially because it usually shows them weeks after they first drew attention. So not only is CNN obviously looking for filler, it's also behind the times.

We don't watch local news. From what little I've seen, its all overdramatic and depressing, with stupid teasers for "exciting" news that they save till the end, and its never that interesting, and they won't tell the weather until almost the end also, but tease the heck out of it. So we catch it every now and then, if something major is going on locally or if we really want to hear the weather, but almost never.

How is this post not about the MTV show? Weird. Just like that show. I can't really watch it myself. For me, it's still skewed a little too far toward exploitation. Also when I watch MTV it feels like I'm watching a television show which consists of commercials only occasionally interrupted by programming.
