A blog about television by TIME’s TV critic James Poniewozik.

Programming Note

Since I posted on the season 2 debut of Breaking Bad Friday, feel free to use this post to discuss it. Also, this is as good a time as any to discuss a crisis affecting Tuned In: There is just too damn much good TV on the weekends for me to blog it all, without hiring either a personal assistant or a second father for the Tuned In Jrs.

As it is, I'm doing Big Love and BSG (only a few episodes left, but still) on a weekly basis. I've been blogging Flight of the Conchords occasionally and Friday Night Lights from time to time. Theoretically, I'd like to do more with United States of Tara (which I'm now a couple episodes behind on). This season of The Amazing Race is good enough to merit occasional comment. Now Breaking Bad is here, Kings will be along in another week—if Joss Whedon makes good on his threat to improve Dollhouse, I'm screwed.

Suffice it to say I am not going to get to it all—particularly when I'm on deadline, as I am today. I'm going to keep up the BSG Watch posts, because we're up to the finale; I'll keep doing Big Love, because I want to and because there aren't as many other critics out there blogging it. Beyond that—it's catch as catch can. I'll write on some of these other shows when they especially grab my notice and I have time. Beyond that, if I'm not writing about your favorite Friday or Sunday show, it's not that I don't care. It's just that I can't be bothered to. There's a difference!

I'll have a Big Love post eventually. In the meantime, feel free to discuss any of the rest of the weekend's TV if you care to. And if you want to write my next column for me while you're at it—hey, I won't stop you.

Yeah, me and Mr. Shara Says spent, like, the whole day Saturday getting caught up on all our Friday Shows. A few thoughts:
    .
Dollhouse: I am liking this show more every week. I seriously don't have any complaints. I don't quite "get" the main complaint about the show, which is that there isn't really anyone to "root" for or relate to, since Echo gets mind-wiped on a regular basis. I just don't think that's the case - the whole point seems to be that the mind-wipes aren't totally working, and every week we're seeing a little bit more about the person who is actually hiding in the shell, trying to re-emerge. I like finding little bits at a time about Echo - and so far we know the following: she's resourceful, she's smart, she's a creative thinker, she's loyal (see helping Sierra because "friends help each other out"), she's brave, she has an inner strength and desire to be self-aware ("I'm not broken"), and she's protective (signaling Sierra not to acknowledge her as they passed). So, my view is that this is not a weakness of the show at all - I actually consider it a strength. Its just a different way of getting to know a character, and one that fits with the kind of show this is. Theory of the Day: I am starting to feel like Alpha is putting her in situations where she has to be self-reliant, because that's what it takes to break out of the doll shell and the tabula rasa state and become more self-aware. I love that the show is asking the question of "how much of a blank slate are we, actually?" because this is something that Whedon has explored in other forms - I think that both Buffy and Angel have had episodes exploring what happens when memories are wiped in one way or another, and those have been awesome.
    .
Friday Night Lights: It seemed surprising that Jason Street was able to get that job so quickly, but I did love his whole Jerry McGuire spiel, and am glad that things are finally looking up for 6. Tim Riggins was awesome in NY, btw.
    .
Terminator: I loved this episode! Creepy creepy Cameron, killing little birds and pondering existence, giving John the "safe" button that would end her "life", the whole culmination of the WTF are Jesse and Riley Up To storyline, and yay more Derek!!! It was still a "slow" episode by comparison to some of the more exciting ones, but I thought that it had plenty of character movement and an excellent creepy-stressful tone. This show is one of my favorites and I'm really not wanting it to be cancelled.

To echo (haaah) shara says, as I mentioned in the other thread, I thought Dollhouse was actually pretty good this week. It's definitely encouraging; I just hope other people haven't been so turned off by some of the first episodes that they won't see if things pick back up.
