Happy Lost Day: Dayenu, Already!

When you think about it, Lost is a pretty Jewish show, particularly given all the Passover resonances. There are, of course, all the Old Testament references. There is an exodus from a land of exile. There's even a plague, though this one goes beyond affecting the firstborn to all Island babies and their mothers.

All of which is to say, Passover is starting, and I'll be at a seder tonight, which will probably delay my watching and posting on tonight's Lost. There will be a Lostwatch, but it may go up tomorrow morning, depending on how much energy I have left after all the wine and reclining.

Which is too bad, because judging simply by the Ben-centric previews, tonight's could be a doozy. Any guesses what's in store for him—either in the present or in any of his various pasts?

I'm really looking forward to tonight's episode. The more Michael Emerson we see, the better.
    `
But alas... duty calls. Give me good discussion to come back to, everyone!

    Happy Lost Day!

Yes, Happy Lost Day and Happy Last-Few-Hours-Of-Bread Day to all who observe it.
    .
I think it says something on our (or just my) over-reliance on technology that I honestly can't remember what I would do in the pre-tivo days when seders and other events conflicted with a TV show I really wanted to watch. I suppose I recorded them to VHS?
    .
Sorry for not answering the question, but since I avoid the ABC previews, all I ever have to go off of is what gets mentioned in the entry or previous comments.

@Matt - I only watched the post-episode preview last week, and that pumped me up a ton. I don't think it's spoilerish to say that it's a Ben-centric episode.
    `
Content of the preview aside, there are a lot of places the episode can cover: Ben and Locke in 2008, Ben and Richard in the temple in 1977, Young(er?) Ben and Widmore, Grown-up Ben and Widmore, any time along his Otherhood (Juliet looks like "her," but who is "her"?) ranging from getting there to the Purge to stealing Alex to ordering executions, his pre-316 actions, his past with folks like the lawyer or the butcher, or something totally different to throw us off.
    `
I really hope I'm not getting my hopes to high for this. But with Lost, is that even possible? :)

Judging from the Temple scene in the preview, I look forward to answering some of the Egyptian culture questions that were ramped up in LaFleur (who's the face of the statue, why does it have four toes, what's the significance of the ankh on the island, is Richard an ancient pharaoh, what goes on in the Temple, ...). Speaking of LaFleur, I think the last four episodes have been the best of the series, and I hope Dead is Dead makes it 5 for 5.

If we are dealing with a Ben flashback episode, to reiterate the apparent timeline:
    -
1977 Penny is probably running around The Island - meaning she's playing with (or at least helping to recuperate) young Ben while getting attacked/killed by him in 2007. (Possibly see a pregnant 1977 Eloise too, making Charles Widmore Daniel's father? Or is Daniel already born by now, somehow being raised off-Island without his mother? Perhaps Eloise had him while on an extended off-Island mission with some other man? Either way, we should hopefully get some answers on those family relationships.)
    -
1987 Rousseau is (apparently) having Alex taken from her by The Others - years before The Purge (and therefore implying Dharma is still around at the time). Who is taking Alex from Danielle? Who is raising her in those years before The Purge? Just how far has Dharma decayed between the Incident and 1987? We may get good intel on any or all of these questions.
    -
2007 Ben probably won't meet with the 2007 Others - or at least not until the final shot. But who's in charge there? Has Richard militarized them? Has one of the tailie kids been anointed leader now? Do they even want Ben or Locke (since each used The Wheel) back? We might find out answers to some or any of these questions.
    -
Just what are Christian & Jacob doing during any/all of these time periods? One bit that no one seems to properly recognize is that Christian 2.0 was in The Wheel cave with Locke back in the Atlantis/Statue era.. and yet he was also in (apparently) 2007 along with Sun & Frank. Is Christian selectively jumping along with the Losties? Or does he exist in all time periods simultaneously now? Why doesn't Locke get the same powers after his resurrection - is it because Christian 2.0 is indeed Christian + something else along for the ride, or does Locke not realize yet that physics no longer apply to Locke 2.0? Was Ben's real goal in killing Locke to make Locke 2.0 another "combination" entity?
    -
In any case, I wouldn't rush to summarize this episode - I suspect that a lot of what is revealed has secondary implications that will take time to reason out.

Happy P-over (thats what the cool kids call it)! Drink a Manischewitz for me!

Happy Lost Day! Can't wait for tonite :) Haven't seen previews, don't know what to expect but anything Ben works for me.

So is Locke Moses? Ben pharoah?

It makes a lot of sense to me that Hostile-DI tensions would be raised by an affair between one of the heads of the Hostiles (Ellie) and the big brain of the DI (Radzinsky). It would produce a brilliant and slightly neurotic offspring (Daniel), and make the Hostiles flip out at a new DI station being built on top of a buried bomb. Ok, maybe "makes a lot of sense" isn't the right phrase. "Kind of maybe fits" sounds better.
    `
I think Christian and Locke are different kinds of undead. The Island likes them both in different ways. If it likes them both :)

@Dave -- I just don't see Radzinsky as such a larger character in the mythos of Lost....maybe to those of us who post all the time, but the best bet is that Faraday's father is Widmore, or else unimportant (i.e. Widmore is not Faraday's father, and Ellie is not Penny's mom), or else (here's a braintwist) one of the Losties -- Hawking trying to get Jack back to 1977 so that he can meet her and be Faraday's daddy????

  • 12

@Chad - keep in mind that, until this season started (and heck, even counting this season), Hawking wasn't (isn't) a larger character to casual fans. And being Daniel's father doesn't necessarily make Radzinsky a major part of the mythos anyway... I just see him as totally brilliant and a good bit crazy. Yes, Eloise is brilliant, but Daniel's not exactly mentally stable. This is hardly set in stone (I've seen fruit more firmly set in jello), but it's something that wouldn't surprise me if they played it in.
    `
It might also explain why Hawking and Widmore aren't closer to each other in modern times.
