The Morning After: Training Day

NBC

NBC

A lot of new TV last night, and I'm not sure when or if I'll get around to blogging it, so let's make this a true Morning After post: feel free to weigh in on the debuts of Southland, Parks and Recreation or Harper's Island (which I dropped after one episode when I realized I wasn't going to review it, but may return to), last night's double-shot of The Office and 30 Rock (which, depending on time, I may post on later), the premiere of Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire (which had its moments but was too much of a bad National Lampoon movie for me) or any other of last night's schedule. Whew! We need a second Thursday.

P&R turned out to be a lot funnier than I had originally expected. It takes a lot of cues from the Office (and how easily to realize this when it's in an Office sandwich), but it still had its own personality, own environment and own characters that all seemed pretty hilarious. I will continue to laugh all day today picturing Amy Poehler rolling into the pit.
    .
I'm also very, very happy that they've injected some of those Office-esque, heartwarming moments with the guy from Elizabethtown helping out a friend (and lov-ah?)

P&R was good, but I'm not sure it can match The Office. What ultimately makes TO so great is the supporting cast. Aside from Aziz Ansari, I'm not sure P&R has as good a cast. we'll need more development, but it's more promising than most other comedies on TV right now.

Who had you ever heard of on The Office besides Carrell? I don't think I can make many judgments on the cast with one episode. I enjoyed P&R, but it was a little Officey.
    .
That said I thought The Office got a little silly. I know it's always silly, but that was too much, and I didn't buy it at all.
    .
Also, it's weird seeing Stringer interact with everyone. Not in a bad way, it's just funny.

I liked The Unusuals, Southland and Harper's Island, all for different reasons. I was entertained though. I will be following them (DVR them for later).

Idris Elba may be TVs second-best antagonist (next to Michael Emerson, of course . . .) He brings a real sense of menace to the Office; it's heartbreaking to see likeable, people-pleasing Jim completely cowed by his lack of affect and unpredictability. I mean, who's favorite sport is SOCCER? How can you plan a suck-up strategy around THAT?!? Though Andy did a good job . . .

Of those shows, I only watched Southland. I found it enjoyable -enough so that I've added it to my DVR's weekly list for now (The Unusuals, too). At the very least I'm going to need something to watch after FNL and T:TSCC end their seasons this week. Between that and BSG, Life and Big Love ending recently there isn't much left...except for Lost of course.
