American Idol Watch: Dodging a Ballot

Ray Mickshaw / FOX

Ray Mickshaw / FOX

Spoilers for last night's American Idol double-elimination after the jump:

I could practically feel the breeze in my living room last night, as the judges and producers of American Idol exhaled in relief as Anoop Desai went home. Having puzzlingly saved Matt Giraud last week, the judges left themselves open to having an actually save-worthy contestant go home tonight.

Sadly for those of us hoping that the no-takebacksies double-elim would unleash chaos in Idol-land, America let us down, sending home Lil and Anoop, both of whom seemed due if not overdue for elimination.

So the only drama on the hourlong program—which I watched, for once, more or less straight through (damn you, Lost clips episode!)—was the horrific medley by former disco greats, capped off by Harry Wayne Casey of KC and the Sunshine Band, looking like an extra Paulie Walnuts might have beat down in an episode of The Sopranos. Some genres of music do not lend themselves to career longevity. And was anyone else terrified that Thelma Houston's gown engineering was going to malfunction? This is live television, madam!

Now we look to be in for a couple dull weeks of a so-far dull season, as the question becomes whether Matt or Allison goes home next. Any upset predictions?

@James - well said, on all counts. I was freaking out, because it is 'that time of the season' for a shocking outster, and when Allison was on the chopping block I figured she would be going home, and this would be the karmic kick-in-the-bum to the judges/producers for wasting their save on an undeserving contestant. So, yeah, everything happened just how it should have, as it has kinda tended to do all season (with the exception of Alexis, who should still freaking be in this thing, instead of either Matt or Anoop).
    .
Well, except for the guest performances. Well, I'll qualify that. I was expecting to totally HATE little David A's song, and I was rolling my eyes and sighing when it started, but it actually grew on me as it went on. Kinda like 80s new age weird but interesting... It sounded like like his voice has been changing on him a little and he's still getting used to it, or something. So, me and Mr. Shara Says gave it a resounding "not as bad as we were expecting, and it eventually made us smile". But the others? Seriously, show, WTF? That was totally uncomfortable and awkward. The first lady couldn't hit half her notes, and seemed to realize it too. The second lady could still sing really well, but her dress was really scary. The top wasn't big enough or stable enough, and the hemline was totally dangerous - so double danger. We were definitely anxiously awaiting a wardrobe malfunction, and terrified for the people on the front row. And HWC just freaked me out in general, that was weird and uncomfortable all around. I couldn't even look at the TV most of the time he was on. I don't want to think about any of it anymore.
    .
So, predictions. Lil and Anoop's voting blocks are up for grabs, where will they go? I have a feeling that Adam has about reached critical mass with his level of fans, that he is polarizing enough NOT to pick up a boatload of new votes. I have a feeling that Danny and Kris are going to get a boost from the Anoop voting block, because I am convinced that there is a whole voting block of women (of various ages) who love sweet, nonthreatening guys, and that Danny and Kris are the obvious fallbacks for all those ladies who supported Anoop. I'd hope that Kris gets the biggest boost, because he is far more vocally talented and more well-defined as an artist, or whatever, but I guess we'll see. I don't really know about Lil's votes, I think that Allison will get a boost for being the only girl left and I'll just hope that Lil's votes don't go to Matt.
    .
I think Matt goes home next week. Then Danny. Then Allison. Then its Kris and Adam in the finale - but I'd be happier if it was Kris and Allison in the finale...

OMFG... Why why why why why do we need to see washed up "singers" that will just embarrass the crap out of themselves on national TV?? I was so uncomfortable and embarrassed FOR them.. KC?? Its like you took an old guy off a construction site and said hey "Come on down and dance around with some hot girls! It'll be fun!!"....
    .
This may have been one of the worst Idol episodes ever..

Lil's sub-par performances, predictable song selections, and lack of originality have more than qualified her for the chopping block since the judges built their Top 13, so naturally, I'm surprised that she even made it this far - my only explanation would be that America needed to keep someone in the competition WITHOUT some kind of shtick (blind pianist, deceased wife, male wearing too much eyeliner, etc.).

I couldn't decide what was more shocking - last week's decision to save Matt Giraud, or this week's elimination of Anoop Desai. With the exception of one sour note, I believe Desai's potential as a professional recording artist far surpasses Giraud's, who sounds a bit too much like Justin Timberlake and John Mayer.

And Allison in the bottom three? I wish I could gain some insight as to why America seems to dislike one of the most acclaimed contestants this season. Her range is almost profound, and - at least for me - much nicer to the ear than Adam Lambert and his sonar screaming.

American Idol holds the top spot with more viewers than any other program on television. I find it hard to beleive the producers could not find any real "talent" for last nights episode. It was beyond horrific...
This years talent is impressive. I feel saving matt was a waste of a save. He does not have a chance at winning. Lil and Anoop did not have a chance at winning and would have gone anyway. But Allison is very talented and keeps ending up in the bottom 3. The save should have been reserved for her. The 5 remaining are correct and could of had Anoop instead of Matt. Either way, Matt will be gone next week or the next. He will not win.
AMERICAN IDOL, PLEASE DO NOT SUJECT US TO ANOTHER EPISODE LIKE LAST NIGHT!!!!!

Okay so usually I keep my humble opinions to myself, But I just can't keep my mouth shut about this.... Matt Giraud.. Most people who are skilled in music and art do so by taking classes, repeated lessons from early childhood, they learn how to sing properly, hit the right notes move across the stage, milk every heart string they can with the drama of it all. Most People.

Now Matt Giraud is not one of those people he didn't even start singing or know he really could sing until he was in the 11th grade in high school. He picked up piano not because mom and pops said let's give him piano lesso a and see if he likes it... He saw a piano and wanted to play so badly he started teaching himself... And now he is a duling piano player, playing and singing at small bars and parties in his home state. Matt plays for anyone who will listen (yes even sometimes for free in the lobby of Hotels). When someone has that much raw natural talent and wants nothing more then to make something of himself, I can do nothing more than applaud him for REALLY trying to make it.

And let me just add that Matt Giraud is THE NICEST, MOST KIND person I ever had the pleasure of bumping into (just last week). I liked him before, but even more now. can't read minds but I can feel hearts and he has a good one.

We understand Lil losing out ... her heart clearly wasn't in the competition the past several weeks, likely wrecked in part by the "judges" wacky jekyll and hyde comments about her performances. She clearly was dispirited. But what explains the weird and exceptionally rude way she was dumped last night? Something clearly went on behind the scenes. What was it? Did she ask to be let go?

We thought the "save" for Matt was badly misplaced and again a sign of the judges' bizarre and unprincipled behavior ... sorry. We don't have anything against Matt, but for drama's sake would have preferred that he go last night. It would have been the best lesson for Simon and the so-called judges. Matt certainly didn't do anything on Tuesday to justify jumping from the lowest rung into the top 4.

My Fiance and I have watched and pretty much agree on a couple of things on Idol!! Why do all these young females vote for Adam Lambert when all he has is a high pitched girls voice, he will end up either a one hit wonder or a great vegas act!! sorry to burst your bubble people! also kris (gumby ) for his crooked singing style and so he has some talent he does not posses any real vocals? We believe that there are two clear choices for fans and that is Danny Gokey< regardless of his personal woes! This young man has some real talent and can go along way ! Then theres Allison just Raw talent to be molded however the music industry wants!! So bottom line Lambert, Kris, and Matt need to go next if this is truly American Idol. Please stop this from becoming a teenybopper who's the cutest guy with no talent contest!!! And thats my opinion,,

I think that Adam Lambert is scary..infact I think that anyone that wears guyliner and hides behind their half bangs is scary. He reminds me of Marilyn Manson..I could imagine him in a one peice unitard singing about cockaroaches and worms..

I completely lost respect for this ever growing trashy show! From almost the beginning, Anoop Desai has been treated like crap. Anyone who watched the show and didn't pick up on it is either stupid or in denial. This guy actually brought some class to this cheesy game show, as well as a beautiful voice. He sang all of his songs better than the original artists! He's the only one I can remember with such a down-to-earth, friendly, intelligent, and compassionate personality! - A true American Idol! I look forward to purchasing his records!

  • 10

And by the way . . . I really do question the whole "voting" process.
Interesting that Matt went from lowest vote to top 4 so quickly. Have to wonder if the producers were saving face.

  • 11

Okay the FACT that Matt wasn't even in the bottom three this week proves that uh... YES he has ALOT of fans... Sorry... Actually I'm not sorry not one bit they saved this young man because he can sing, flat out sing, u can't take that away from him! I don't care who your favorite is... The boy is talented. I was listening to his studio recorded version of the song "you found me", he killed it! And I love his version of "let's get it on"! His recorded voice is so nice to listen to, smooth with the perfect amount of grit. Listen to them yourself before u judge!

Will Matt win? Probably not because it seems everyone is under a Adam trance (even Simon)... But Matt deserves RESPECT for his musical capabilities, not hate.

  • 12

OMGG! I sooo agree with you Artistnme!! Thank god I found someone who also says exactly what I'm thinking about Matt! I'm so sick of people talking so much crap about him! I think he is extremely talented and I don't understand why alot of people are so negative about him?? I'm really tired of the judges being so hard on him when he doesn't deserve it!! Grrrrr..yes there has been a couple times where the critism was warranted but I think overall he has a AWESOME stage presence and actually looked like a TRUE entertainer when he sang Stayin Alive and danced! and looked very HOT doing it to! The sad thing is he's not going to win because everyone keeps trashing him via the internet (saying Adam and Kris are just so wonderful..blah, blah, blah) and plus the judges aren't helping his cause one bit BUT I do truly believe he is going to go far even after he is voted off so I'm not too worried about it and like you said The Guy wasn't even in the bottom three so obviously there is alot of people out there that love him as much as myself!!! GO MATT!! I can't wait to buy your first big album!!

  • 13

I've loved Matt all season but meeting him in person hearing his story and seeing that Matt has an awesome personality to go along with his insane musical skills... I'm a fan too for life!

  • 14

Hey Artistnme..where do i go to hear his studio recorded version of his song "you found me"?..by the way I LOVED his "let's get it on" version also!! I'm glad a found another fan of Matt's! Yayyy!

Go to American Idol . Com and click on his name it will take u to I t u n e s

  • 16

    Hope it works

  • 17

@lemosa I agree, a Danny/Allison sing-off would be a great way to end this exceptional season of Idol (It seems that I'm the only one who seems to be enjoying our current lineup)

@artistnme Don't get me wrong, I think that Matt Giraud is extremely likeable - if I ever met him, as you have, I'd probably want to be his best friend! And I do think that his smooth, soulful voice is a gift; I just would have liked to see him use it to its fullest potential. There's no doubt in my mind that if he teams up with a great producer and really finds his own unique style, he could be a huge hit, probably even overtake whoever ends up winning.

Which, at this point, looks like it could very well be Adam Lambert. I have a bone to pick with that hair-gelling, eyeliner-wearing poser-ruining-all-of-my-favorite-songs. Trust me, if Adam ends up on top, I'm hoping that Matt makes a comeback and shows him what vocal talent really is about - WITHOUT all the smoke and mirrors.

  • 18

Yayy Kimsavestheday... That would be the best outcome to that situation! It's funny because I met people here who have voted (by texting) OVER 1,000 times for Matt last tuesday (one of whom was my crazy friend haha), and alot of times anywhere around 30,000 votes seperate the idols... when you think of it that's ONLY 30 PEOPLE voting 1,000 times haha... well I guess I'm a true Optimist but I think he has a shot.

Muddster88 Now you know TWO Matt Fans! Woo-hoo!!

  • 19

Count me in. I am a huge fan of Matt. Damn! he's amazing. If he sucked big time before, it really didn't matter to me at all because everybody has flaws and the pressure is beyond them. I don't assume much about him winning this competition but who knows, right? maybe, after all those harsh comments from Simon, that will help him boost up his confidence and do more amazing performances. There's a few more weeks, they're down to five...I mean, things could happen in mysterious ways. Let's just be positive and wish them all luck especially to Matt. I am from the Philippines and it's frustrating not to be able to vote for him. *sigh* Next week is jazz week...might be an advantage for him bc he has this soulful, bluesy voice...let's just see.

  • 20

Hi my fellow Matt friends! :-) I voted for him over 50 times calling in and this week I will probably vote 100 times at least!! Yayy Matt!! love you!!!

  • 21

Ha. Whatever contestant has individual people voting for him 1,000 or more times on competition night should win no matter how talendted he is compared with the other contestants -- just to keep the most prolific voters most happy. Did Simon give each of "Matt's friends" a personal wake up call? Now, what I want to know is whether those 1,000 votes also inspire the voter to buy a new Ford.

I think I'd like to see Richard Daley on the show some night as a guest judge. He won't be very talkative, I don't think, but he should be inspirational.

  • 22

Yeah I got a "wake up call" bdivad..
I realized that me voting 20 or 30 times isn't going to do much for the guy I think is the best on the show. So what do I now need to do? I have to vote 500 plus times so I can match the computer software some other idol fans use to vote for there faves... Trust it's not just one group of fans doing it it's All of them. Matt needs the same dedication. You're right. I wish there was a cap on how many times one person or (system) can vote, but until then I guess I have to try and keep up. If Matt goes... I guess I couldn't hang.

  • 23

Artistnme, I'm not voting for anyone this year, but, in the past, when I have voted, I normally have capped it at 10 votes max for any one contestant. But I have experienced voting problems, busy signals, etc. getting through at times and wonder what that is about. It makes me a bit suspicious about the show manipulating the votes. Who audits the vote? It's not scientific and it's not democracy either, although it seems to be in large part (mostly) youthful enthusiasm, so maybe that translates into bucks. I don't know.

And, even though I'm not voting this year, we do own three Fords, so I hope the sponsor is happy anyway. :-)

  • 24

bdivad, oh how I would love them to post every week, or at the very least every eason EXACTLY how many votes each idol got each week! I have a feeling that it would be off by plenty.

I also think that they dont personaly change the votes (at least I hope not) I think they manipulate America in other ways...
like spending sooo much time on one persons history/life... like Danny Gokey in the earlier part of the season they spent so much time on his story you start to feel like you "know" them. Then later there new golden boy Adam was highlighted with the dramatic lighting, one on ones with Ryan and for some reason seems to go last or near last ever week (hope that changes soon). Matt had almost no air time before he made the top 10...we at home never got to see him singing! or his "story" only about 30 seconds of his stunning Hollywood week performance of "Georgia".
It's kinda funny because during Hollywood week a producer of AI said that Matt is the best musician we ever had on the show... I was at home thinking well why dont you ever show him! lol.
