Judging American Idol: The Final 5
It was Songs of the Rat Pack Era tonight on American Idol, so that meant... Jamie Foxx as mentor? Because he played Ray Charles in a movie? Why not Don Cheadle — at least he played Sammy Davis Jr.! Why didn't they get Joaquin Phoenix for country night? Foxx is at least amusing, delivering some Tracy Jordan-esque lines like "he's not trying to sing the Throat Olympics" to help pad out a full hour with only five performances.
How did the songs for swingin' lovers measure up? I'm guessing Matt goes home this week, though Allison would not surprise me. And I'll guess Kris for the last bottom-three spot, although this could be the week Adam gets his first bottom three scare for being a little too, er, "theatrical" for the Idol audience. Read on for the reviews...

Anyone else think Matt Giraud looks like Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake's love child?

Last night was much better than I expected, considering that I pretty much hate Rat Pack stuff. I thought that Matt stood alone as the most horriblest.
.
Kris - the dude continues to impress me. He is smart and knows how to pick songs, and he has a good sense of when to change them up and when to honor the original. Very talented dude, I'd love to see him in the finals (or top 3 at least).
.
Allison - I thought she picked an excellent song for her voice, she got to slow down and connect with the song while still bringing that cool edge she's got, I thought it all worked for her last nite!
.
Matt - I don't like him and want him to go home! That whole song was lame-o, he sounded off key most of the time, it was boring, go home Matt!! Again, he picks a song I HATE and then does a bunch of stuff with it that I don't like. That's apparently his thing...
.
Danny - OK, I'm not a Danny hater I just haven't really seen what the big deal is. Last night, I was prepared to be bored but would up liking it a lot once he got going. He totally did have a boosted-up stage presence, like he was confident and having fun. I was getting a very Bruce Springsteen/Eric Clapton vibe off Danny, which is what he really needs to keep doing, and I really liked it.
.
Adam - Really liked it. I thought that the song had some parts that were a bit tuneless, and definitely thought it crossed the line into over-theatric, but the good stuff definitely outweighed the weaker stuff - and that bit at the end? Awesome. In terms of being comfortable with himself, confidence, and 'performing' to the crowd, he is miles ahead of everyone else. And he's definitely the most interesting person around this season. And I do love a guy who can pull off drag... I really don't think that he's gonna pick up a lot more votes from the Anoop-Lil voting blocs, I have a feeling that those votes are going to Danny and Kris. I think that Danny's performance was more upbeat and exciting than Kris's, so Danny might pick up more votes going in, which could put Kris in danger...
.
As long as Matt goes home, I'll be totally happy, and this season will have the RIGHT top 4, and I don't care what happens from there. -

Would it have been too much to ask for the show to make it work out that someone could have sung All Along the Watchtower for Final Five night?

@shara says: Never a big Rat Packer myself, but check out The Wham of Sam! sometime if you ever have a chance. Convinced me that Sammy Davis Jr was underrated.

Jamie Foxx for "Rat Pack" night? They really should've had Harry Connick Jr. be the mentor.
Another random thought: why don't they have a "Hits by Former American Idol Contestants" night? There is now more than enough material for the contestants to choose from.

Watching Adam Lambert ascend the crystal staircase of Idol is kind of like - no, EXACTLY like - having one of those four-month-long high school relationships:
.
It was puppy love when he crooned "If I Can't Have You." When he sang "Mad World," I realized that we had a lot in common. Then I almost cried during "Tracks of My Tears." Like a school dance, he embarrassed me a little during "Play that Funky Music." "Ring Of Fire" not only bored me to death, but I felt this strong, inexplicable urge to throw something at my television. And, just when I decide to dump him, I realize that he's the most popular kid in school.
.
The verdict: you have to be sixteen to like this guy. His pared-down vocals are moving, but the antics and the screaming don't hold a candle to the sweet and sophisticated falsettos coming from the likes of Kris Allen and Matt Giraud.
.
And what's with the black nail polish, eyeliner, and overcooked hair? Sorry Adam, but the title of Pete Wentz is already taken. -
