Idol Watch: Straight Up, Now

Ray Mickshaw / FOX
Spoilers for American Idol's elimination, after the break:
The good news was, we didn't have to hear That Awful Note again, since Danny Gokey escaped elimination. (Thus avoiding becoming the Howard Dean of American Idol, his run ended with one unfortunate yelp.)
The bad news, Allison got hosed. I'm tempted to say hosed by the judges, who were both inexplicably rough on her and easy on Danny Tuesday night, but honestly, I'm not sure how great the influence of the judges' comments is at this point. Perhaps she got hosed by you, then, America.
But hosed she was, as she showed by delivering a fine, gutsy—and appropriately tearful—reprise of "Crybaby." The bright side for Allison is that she's had ample time to have viewers get to know her; she was ejected in fourth place, which didn't seem to hurt musical guest Chris Daughtry. Frankly, I can imagine someone making and selling a CD of hers much more easily than I can with Danny. (On the other hand—Trip Home Week next week, which means we get to see Milwaukee!)
Beyond that, the, um, "highlight" of last night's show was Paula Abdul's performance. Thank God that, over the past two decades, pitch-correction technology has finally caught up with her voice! Seriously, girl sounded like a cyborg, but at least she, or her computer, was in tune. (Think of the tragedy for bad singers of her era. If only there were a chip in 1990 powerful enough to make Milli Vanilli into good singers live, their career may have been far different.)
Al this gives me two ideas (1) Idol needs to have an Autotune Night, and (2) Randy Jackson/Journey reunion, now!
Anyway, good luck, Allison, and enjoy your pity vote, Danny. How do you handicap the Final Three?

I'm just gonna sulk about this Allison thing for awhile - although she's arguably better off not winning. No way should Danny place above Allison. I've tried to like Danny, and there was once recent week that I thought he did pretty well. But I just don't see what all the fuss is about. Bo-ring.
.
Anyway, here's hoping that Kris makes the finals. And I can't wait to see the hometown visit to Conway, Arkansas - I used to live there and I can't wait to see some good Conway footage. Too bad they've just missed the annual Toad Suck Daze festival out there, some footage of that would have been awesome

I was not that thrilled with Allison's performance on Rock Night (except for her duet with Adam, which totally rocked), but I have to say she totally sang the hell out of that song on elimination night. Something tells me Allison will have a future, but it depends on how much she wants it. In the end, I think Allison was just having fun and never really had that fire to win this thing -- certainly not like Adam, who you can easily see is in it to win it.
.
That being sad, she should not have been the one to go home. Just going on performance, it should have been either Danny or Kris, but at this point it comes down to fan base and all three of the remaining contestants have strong fan bases. I would go so far as to say Danny has the strongest base of fans and could take home the prize. Unfortunately, if he does I think he'll end up being another Taylor Hicks. While Hicks is a great singer, he never really had it in himself to be star.
.
When I look at the final three and think about who could have the career of Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood, Adam is really the only one I think could approach that -- and I'm no Adam fan. Both Danny (the choir boy) and Kris (the soft-spoken pretty boy) have mediocre talent at best. -

@jdt.. You have GOT to be kidding me. Danny is exceptionally talented. I think the only problem with him has been his song choices. His vocals and delivery are spot on with every successful song choice he makes. To say he is mediocre is to be horribly misinformed about what makes a musician great.

Maybe Tom Shaw and I should paint "DG" across our chests to get on TV. -

i totally agree with jdt67 regarding Danny and i have to disagree with natego. Danny may have the voice but he doesnt have the creativity and authenticity fit for the business. He's just going to be another Taylor Hicks. If you can see each week, Adam catches everyone's attention with his originality of renditions unlike the other contestants who try to immitate the original versions of songs. This just shows that Adam is the most promising in the recording world.

@raddify.. i have a problem specifically with calling him a "mediocre talent". As for authenticity and creativity, i would not argue as much. I think he could use more originality and creativity as well.
.
And by the way, in the words of Randy "This is a singing competition ..and you (he) can sing!" -

Sorry, but I have to agree with ... {dramatic Simon pause} ... shara. With due respect to natego, if Danny has exceptional talent, it is totally lost on me. I suppose on a good day he may have some sort of blues-y vibe, but again that invites comparison to Taylor. Unlike Taylor, though, who recognized his niche and played to it, I think Danny in his own mind envisions himself as a versatile artist (which might explain the song choices), and that just isn't the case.
.
Barring unexpected suckage, I'd say Adam should sail through next round after picking up a lot of Allison's rocker chick voting bloc (esp after their duet this week), and Kris and Danny will split the "nice guy" vote. I'd really, really love for Kris to make it through because imho he's got the artistry, and the Jason Mraz musical quirkiness, and I'd buy his album in a second.
.
Can't wait to see the judges choice for Adam, which I expect will be Simon's. How is that gonna work, anyway? In the past there was one judge per final three contestant. Will Paula and Kara have to arm wrestle for the pick this time? -

@live.. He is an exceptional VOCALIST. If you want to judge talent based only on performance style and originality, I can let that go. But, to me, to say he is a mediocre talent completely negates the exceptional qualities he possesses as a VOCALIST.

@natego: Musical taste is a very subjective thing, so I'm not going to try arguing either of us is wrong or right. But personally, I totally disagree that Danny is exceptional as a vocalist, and I think you have to accept that other people feel the same. If I'm not willing to spend 99 cents to buy the studio version of his songs off iTunes (and from what I've heard, I'm not alone in that), that's a judgement based on nothing but vocal delivery, all performance considerations aside.
.
Btw, there are also lots of people who think that all Adam does is scream (and who complained similarly about David Cook last year), and I respect their view even though I (and others) happen to think Adam and David are Hot Molten Lava(tm). -
