Judging American Idol: The Final 3
This is what American Idol thinks of you, America: you are a sap. You are maudlin and sentimental and the way to your heart is with a big, sloppy ballad, the more power notes the better. So for the penultimate Idol of season 8—and holy crap, there have been 300 episodes of this show?—judges and contestants alike served up the slow-dance tunes, with not a rocker or dance song to break the monotony. (Lambert! I was counting on you to bring the glitter rock!)
So who made it on your dance card, America? I'm thinking that if Danny survived his "Dream On" disaster, he goes through to the finals on his decent showing tonight. Which probably leaves Kris the odd man out—but I agree with Simon that Adam is by no means a lock.

I think what we've got here is a singer (Danny), an artist (Kris) and a performer (Adam) ... and I'm still holding out for the artist and performer to make it through to the finale.
.
It was a bit of a letdown that even Adam kept it relatively safe, but it's sort of understandable. Landing in the bottom two after his 'theatrical' performance undoubtedly made him think twice about overdoing it and alienating the audience. How many folks have ever won Idol by taking a big risk at this point in the game anyway?
.
After thinking about it, I wonder if the producers realized most of the actual 'singing competition' last night was going to be fairly snoozy, so they told the judges to amp up the conflict between themselves to keep it interesting? Or maybe Simon just decided that on his own. -

Who cares? Today is the last LOST DAY of the year!!!!
.
(Sorry to invade the strange, foreign territory that is Idol-Watch. Since I don't know the secret handshake and have never seen a minute of the show, I will now slowly retreat and wait for James' Lost Discussion Group post...) -

Completely agreed.
.
I missed the first 25 minutes, but tuned in just in time to see Adam sing One. I liked both Adam songs and the one Kris song I saw. I just want Danny to go home now. -

@Chaddog - HAPPY LAST LOST DAY!!!!!

kris allen kicked some gokey ass last night. glamberace ass too. i think he came through as the most exciting, and original of the three. i think that means gokey is on shakey ground.

I hope Danny goes on to win the whole thing, but i'm not sure about that happening considering that America will vote for the flambouyant one. Kris should perform for some disney shows, he's got the tweens appeal to be a hit

Thank you for acknowledging that the background vocals on Adam's performance of 'Cryin' were completely messed up. He wasn't off pitch, they were, and it was obvious the sound was bothering him when he took out his in-ear monitor to hear himself better. I've never voted for anyone on AI until last night when I dialed for Adam... a lot.

I don't watch most of the performances, but when I saw that Adam sang One, I had to find the video and watch it. I was expecting to love it, but I think that since I love the song and U2 so much, it really didn't impress me. I don't know if the AI site was cutting out parts of his performance or if he sang a really abridged version, but the song was over before I realized it.
`
I was hoping I'd get on AI for chasing after Danny's limo when he was driving past my work, but nobody told me they saw me. Sad. (Actually, he was stuck at a red light, but I did run, just a little. It was hilarious.) -

@Dave - the AI contestants only get a couple of minutes to sing each song, so their televised version is almost always abridged. However, the "studio version" which they record separately to be sold on iTunes is usually the complete song.
If you meant you chased Danny's limo when he went home this past weekend, they didn't really show any highlights of the visits last night. They'll surely roll some of that footage tonight as part of the results show, so you may yet have your shot at infamy

@Dave- how could u not like the version of Adam? Maybe the reason why u weren't into it is because you were expecting it to be sung the way U2 did and Adam wont win AI if he just mimics songs. He's sure to be safe anyway with the comments of the judges, for sure it will have an impact on the voters. :p
PS: I think Adam and Kris will be in the finals. :p

personally, i don't think it was adam's background singers who were flat last night. and i tend to agree with the singer-artist-performer deal, but i actually think adam is all three. he's so not my favorite, but i think in a lot of ways, he's years beyond kris and danny. then again, he SHOULD BE (he's had much more experience on stage, i.e. "wicked".) listen, i'm a danny fan, but he might not be in the finals had he performed like this on the show: watch GOKEY FAIL...

@raddify - After listening a couple times, I think what bothered me most is he turned it from a great song into another cookie-cutter AI pop song.
`
I readily admit that I'm totally biased towards the hometown guy (Danny), and while I follow the show to see how Danny does, I rarely watch performances. I just really didn't like how Adam sang the song. *Shrug* -
