Idol Watch: Your Final Two

Brief spoilers for the American Idol elimination after the jump:

I was busy last night first watching the Lost finale and then writing it up, so my viewing of American Idol's results show was limited pulling it up on Tivo, seeing that Gokey was singing the swan song, then turning it off. Which is really how all Idol results shows should be watched.

Well done, America. I feel a little bad for Danny, given that he began the season as a favorite but since has had the tide of fan and (especially) critic attention turn on him. He's a fine singer and he had a good run, but it was his time: he never really showed any ability to stretch beyond his soul crooning, whereas Kris has demonstrated more versatility and Adam more performance skill.

Now what? As I've said, Idol is like a political primary; every time a candidate drops out, the equation changes as his or her voters must go somewhere else (or stay home). I can't say I know who the Gokey voter is, exactly. I'm guessing, given his retro stylings, that they're a little on the older end for Idol voters. But does that help Kris (because these voters are more musically conservative and likely to be annoyed by Adam) or Adam (because they're not tween girls and thus less likely to be gaga over Kris)?

I don't know. But it's certainly time we stop treating this as an Adam runaway. If I were the online-betting type, I'd like the odds being provided on Kris right now; he's definitely got a fierce fanbase. Adam, meanwhile, is polarizing; and he's become such a media sensation and judges' favorite that some voters may just be sick of feeling he's being forced on them as a fait accompli.

The one thing I'm not sure I buy is the argument that Kris will win because the teenage girls love him. That may be true—I just don't know how much that vote matters given Idol's current demographics. Last year, David Archuleta lost, even though he had the big kid vote, as you'll recall from this video. Bottom line, it's anybody's contest now. Your bets?

This is definitely a good top 2. Better than it would have been if Danny was still around. I don't care who wins at this point, they've both done a great job and been interesting and consistent all season - just in different ways. I'm gonna go with the power of the sweet, nonthreatening guy here - Kris and Danny have been splitting the sweet, nonthreatening guy vote up to this point and I have a feeling that Kris will get a major boost. But we'll see :) I didn't watch it either, but I have family/friends who send me facebook messages during Lost so I'll know whose going home...

I have to echo Shara's sentiment: does it really matter who wins at this point? Both of these guys will go on to record deals; how much success they will have is anybody's guess. Of the two, I think Adam has the most "star quality" and could really be something to reckon with when he can get out from under Idol's thumb. Kris is talented and he might have a successful career, but there are so many singers out there like that he could just get lost in the shuffle.
    .
Who wins will come to down performances and fans. And no one should underestimate Kris' strong fan base.

Fyi, for the folks who've only seen the bottom line, Ryan announced that the top two were separately by only a million votes, out of 88 million total. So definitely no-one should assume this is a runaway for Adam. In fact, I'd probably also give the edge right now to Kris.
    .
Having seen up close what happens when you mobilize an entire state to root for a native son on AI (in my case, Alabama for Ruben and Taylor), I have to believe the kind folks of Arkansas will be dialing in force for Kris next week no matter what happens during the actual show. I'd bet as well that most of Danny's voters will gravitate towards Kris.
    .
But, Adam has had some bravura moments during the season and likely the most downloads, so ultimately it may come down to whether one or both of them manage to pull off a truly show-stopping performance (good or bad) next week. Which in the end, is where you'd really like the competition to be at this point, yes?
    .
In any case, I couldn't be happier with how it worked out. Part of that is the producers not getting their predetermined match-up, but more importantly, I like both Adam and Kris as people, and they seem genuinely to feel the same about each other. Style-wise, they're not just apples vs oranges, it's more like apples vs chili peppers, but I can honestly enjoy both.
    .
I'm absolutely looking forward to next week, because for a change I can root for both of them, and I hope that carries over to them just bringing their best without stressing over who wins.

@livebyonefive: my Arkansas friends/family inform me that Kris Allen's ascension to the finals is being hailed with as much enthusiasm as if it were the Second Coming. So, we can probably consider that vote appropriately mobilized :)

I think Simon is going to turn on Adam next week -- Simon knows that Kris is a lot easier in terms of marketing (he's Murdoch's answer to the Jonas Brothers -- or Sanjaya with a little more talent) and marketing is what the show is really about. Adam, of course, is infinitely more talented, but talent means little on AI...

Ryan said that only a million separated Kris and Adam, so if the Danny voters go to Kris, he could win, which would be totally exciting. I really wish Idol would make it so each person can only vote once. . .

@chelsea, shara and plukasiak: why are u guys so into kris even though WE all know that Adam deserves to win. Plukasiak said talent means little on AI but talent is really what the show is about. Why else do you think would the judges be FOR Adam. But yes i agree some Danny voters might go to Kris but don't forget about the voters for the other eliminated contestants, they probably would base it on who really deserves to win. Kris for me is a second coming of Archuleta and history must repeat itself, let's go for the BEST America!

I don't know about chelsea or shara, but I'm not into Kris. In terms of talent, he's a mediocrity, but mediocrity has never been an impediment to success in the music business if you've got the right "look"--and the right backers.
    _
(of course Adam is more talented, but AI is, first and foremost, a popularity contest, and being more talented doesn't make one more deserving of victory.)
    _
my point was simply that, in terms of Simon's agenda (and that of the other owners of AI) Kris is a more suitable choice. Idol winners have a shelf life of only a year or two by now, and Kris is perfect for the "exploit his fan base before they grow up" kind of marketing that is perfect for AI winners.
