The Morning After: So You Think I Should Watch?

This summer, I have vowed to make a good-faith effort to watch So You Think You Can Dance and see if I can get into the show. Because I am a man of very modest ambitions. This commitment, however, doesn't extend to the audition rounds. Did any Tuned Inlanders watch last night? If not, what's on your summer viewing calendar? (I'll start: I just discovered I have the Tennis Channel. Oscure clay courts of the world, here I come!)

I was roped into watching SYTYCD last summer, and nearly a year later my memories of the show include a raging age-inappropriate crush on Kherington; a Pavlovian response (flinching, not salivating) to the voice of Mary, the judge; and a few good dance numbers toward the end of the season. I dimly recall enduring the auditions and wondering why Fox was going to all the trouble of airing blooper reels as a first-run broadcast. Once they arrive in Vegas it's a pretty good show -- there's a lot of energy, and much more of a group dynamic (which makes the competitors seem less helpless) than what I've seen of American Idol -- but the interminable auditions, presented as they are, are a cast-iron waste of time.

van68 summed up my experiences with the show better than I could ever hope to (also funnier), but that's not going to stop me from being superfluous.
I like SYTYCD because my limited knowledge of dance makes the whole thing much more impressive than Idol and other singing/music performance equivalents. In fact, the show has given me some of the best TV experiences of the last few years; specifically some of the more avant-garde numbers. Even if I do my share of the mandated squirming-at-the-judges, this lot seem a lot less annoying than Cowell & cohorts, and Cat Deeley is a really good host.

Skipping the auditions are a good call. While they are not nearly as hellish as the Idol Auditions, they are certainly the least compelling portion of the show and not representative of how awesome it is. I hope you enjoy the show once it reaches the Top 20!

Beyond SYTYCD, looking forward to some new cable stuff (Nurse Jackie on Showtime and Hung whenever that hits HBO), whenever Project Runway surfaces on Lifetime (August now?), Entourage, Weeds, Mad Men and clearing my DVR below 95% capacity. Just finally starting watching Season 2 of Damages yesterday!
