Dead Tree Alert II: Nurse Jackie Review

Showtime

Showtime

Elsewhere in this week's TIME, I review Showtime's Nurse Jackie, with Edie Falco, which debuts Monday. I like it, a lot, and you can read why here

A brief note on the headline. The original headline was "Our Bitter Angels," which plays off the whole angel of mercy / fallen angel contrast I set up in the lede (and which the opening of the pilot, which you can watch online, makes pretty plain), as well as, of course, being a pun on "the better angels of our nature." Crazy, huh?

Anyway, the layout for the piece change, requiring us to cut down the hed, and it became "Bitter Angel." Which sounds a littler more dour than the show actually is. But it would make a pretty good band name.

I really liked the show too and will be interested to see what a typical episode is like now that we know the ways in which she's fallen (your original headline was definitely better - love it). This is a character I can see wanting to spend a lot of time with, however it progresses. I'd quibble with your characterization that she's moral in her professional life though. (Spoiler:) Faking a signature on a donor card, throwing out the ear, reluctant to give the Heimlich on her off-hours, being high at work ... none of that is what I'd consider moral for a health care professional, and while we can see the humanity or justification behind some of those decisions, I think it's all part of how she's fallen, too.

Wow. Watched the pilot online. The half hour flew by, I'll be very interested to see how the show settles out on a weekly basis (not that I actually have Showtime...). Edie Falco is such an amazing, intense actress. Yeah, I guess it would be hard to review without discussing the end reveal. Definitely looks like an interesting show - and Peter Facinelli as the doctor was cracking me up in multiple ways :) So different from his recent Dr. Cullen turn... And Father Intintola!
    .
Question - was she getting "high" at work or getting "right"? Because I think that's an important distinction - was she losing her clear-headedness or was she regaining her ability to do good work?

@shara I think she (and House) would say they need the pills to do their job, and the audience can accept that's true - except it's also not the whole story, or why is she snorting it and getting it illicitly? (She'd be likely to become unemployed for that, not for taking prescribed painkillers). I think that's what makes the character interesting. All her "immoral" actions can be justified, but only by ignoring another side to them - it's all grey area instead of black and white.

wow. I am shocked at this reaction. I did not like the show at all. Thought the characters were bland and one dimensional. I found myself staring at the iTunes clock halfway through. I wrote a review for another website and thought that the show was driven so much by Falco the writers would have been happy with it just being her and no one else on the screen. I guess my biggest problem is that when it comes to the anti-hero, we the viewers must connect with their good intentions in spite of their indiscretions. I just didn't get that sense. I never warmed up to her character.
