The Sarah and Dave Show: The Outrage-a-Thon Continues

So, as I type this, it's 9 a.m., and the lead story at the top of the hour on MSNBC is a Democratic and a Republican strategist debating each other on the feud between Sarah Palin and David Letterman. The news judgment shouldn't surprise me, I guess: Palin launched her latest broadside against Dave on NBC's Today Show, with Matt Lauer, so there's something in it for NBC News here.

All this makes me feel slightly guilty about adding to the publicity, but hey, this isn't Swampland. In the interest of completism, then, here's the interview:

We've discussed the original Letterman jokes, which I agreed were scuzzy, in a couple earlier threads, and by all means have at them again if you like. But let's not pretend this is about the jokes anymore. Once you have expressed your outrage at remarks about you and your family, then done it again, then gone on the number-one morning show in the country to re-express it—it's no longer about the outrage.

Or rather, it's no longer about your outrage. (Nor, sorry, is it about the gas pipeline that provided the fig leaf for the coverage.) What it is, is another of those carefully maintained outrage-a-thons that were so delightful throughout the 2008 campaign. What it is—with the references to the "Hollywood / New York" mentality and the media not getting "our" values—is about positioning Palin for 2012 as the Agnew-esque candidate of cultural resentment against the media, Hollywood and "elites," with a 21st-century twist of identity politics. Because we saw how well that worked last time. (When, as I've said repeatedly, I voted for her opponents, so consider the source, etc.)

At the same time, she's punishing Dave by providing him tremendous exposure as he's facing a new competitor on NBC. (Who the Today Show is thus indirectly undermining. The ironies don't stop!) And upping the ante by deliberately refusing to say that her spokesperson was not calling Dave a child molester: "Take it however you want to take it."

What's curious to me is the question of just how eager Middle America is to hate Dave. (Also, calling America's sweetie Lauer "naive" on TV seems a little off to me as a PR move, but we'll see.) I mean, you have to take the targets that opportunity presents you, but this is not exactly like going to war with Eminem or Jeremiah Wright. First we were hearing that midwesterner Dave was mainstream America's late-night host because he wasn't goofy and lewd like Conan O'Brien. Now mainstream America's going to recoil from him as the face of snotty, out-of-touch Hollywood?

You tell me. Is anybody winning in this thing?

    My god this woman got even dumber over the last 6 months. Miracles do happen.

  • 2

    Much as I loathe her as a politician, I have to admit David Letterman has handed her a win on this one. Yes, I know this is an outrage-a-thon, and no I don't think it's going to catapult her to the whitehouse (God help America). But...this was a REALLY bad joke. I would be fracking pissed if someone made a lewd joke about my 14-year old daughter. Saying "oh I meant your 18-year-old daughter" is only better in a rather twisted universe. I agree it's ridiculous to suggest he's a pedophile,...on the other hand if he said this about my daughter, I wouldn't let him around her for sure.

    Doesn't Letterman have "fact checkers" to screen these jokes?

  • 3

    Wow, she just wont quit. I think we need Dr. Phil to step in and solve this feud. For anyone who doesn't care about the pipeline stuff, the Letterman part starts around the 3:30 mark.

  • 4

    Yeah. . . Letterman needs to drop it as well

    After Sarah Palin took her 14 year-old daughter to a New Yoork Yankees game, this is what leftist loser Letterman said: "One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game, during the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez."

    -

    Now that leftist loser Letterman has been exposed for promoting the rape of a 14 year-old girl because she is the daughter of a woman he hates, leftist loser Letterman has attempted (and failed) to defend himself by falsely alleging that he had no fantasy involving the rape of 14 year-old Willow Palin by a New York Yankees player. His "defense" now is that he was merely "joking" about the rape at Yankee Stadium of another teenage girl Bristol Palin (who happened to be in Alaska at the time Sarah Palin at Yankee Stadium in New York!) Leftist loser Letterman is as sick and stupid as his audience.

    -

    Also, I particularly enjoy seeing leftist loser Letterman's identically like-minded useful idiots in the Washington/New York press corps attempting (and failing) to defend him. Time magazine has actually alleged: "Palin launched her latest broadside against Dave on NBC's Today Show ...." Got it? Palin is the person "launch[ing] ... broadside[s]" and not the sick leftist loser who promoted the rape of Palin's 14 year-old daughter.

    I said it yesterday and I'll say it again today: this is lipstick on a pig all over again. No one that has two brain cells to rub together can possibly believe that Palin is genuinely upset about this, not given her track record for dealing with these sorts of situations that she established during the campaign. Letterman explained the joke and admitted that it wasn't the highest caliber attempt at humor. Palin isn't owed an apology. Clearly Letterman isn't a pedophile and for Palin's people to let that allegation hang in the air like they did is just mean and dirty. If they're trying to teach Letterman a lesson, the only thing they're really conveying is how low they're willing to go to get back at someone. Is this really what a presidential hopeful wants to convey? The only people that could find anything to like in that sort of behavior are the Fox News wingnuts that she played to so hard at the end of the '08 campaign.

    So a priest, a rabbi, and a minister walk into a bar . . . and Sarah Palin says "Hey, I wonder which bar they're at . . . maybe I should stop by!"
    .
    Most jokes are not literal, and are not tied to a physcial reality. That's kinda the whole point. So for her to think "Willow was the only daughter with me, Dave must have been talking about her" makes her seem even denser than when Putin was buzzing her house in his MiG.
    .
    Dave isn't without blame, but he's gonna win this one, for a very simple reason: when he acts the fool, his ratings go up. When Sarah acts the fool, she loses elections. Entertainers (Dave, Jay, Rush, Hannity, et. al.) make more money when they say outlandish things. Politicians usually get punished for it in the short (and long) run . . .

    Any mother or father who would allow their children anywhere near a sick 74 year-old leftist loser like Letterman is as stupid and naive as any fool who believes leftist loser Letterman's "explanation" that he was merely promoting the rape of an 18 year-old girl and not promoting the rape of a 14 year-old girl.

  • 9

    Whose audience has the bigger collection of kooks, dupes, freaks, fools and idiots: Leftist loser Letterman's, Jon so-called "Stewart" Leibowitz's, Stephen Colbert's, Cooper Anderson's or Bill Maher's?

  • 10

    "he was merely promoting the rape of an 18 year-old girl "

    Actually, he was making a joke that played on the public's perceived promiscuity of Alex Rodriguez and Bristol Palin. Rape, statutory or otherwise, was never a component regardless of how often Palin and her people say otherwise. No one who heard that joke could reasonably feel otherwise.

  • 12

    @Poniewozick

    Just the repeated phrase "leftist loser Letterman" says quite a bit about Textee's perspective, but, yeah, using Jon Stewart's birth name in that context adds another layer to it doesn't it?

  • 13

    I agree that by this point, the situation has a, "Help! Help! I'm being repressed!" quality about it. Were the jokes in bad taste? Yes. Were the jokes made about the adult daughter? Of course they were; she's the only daughter most people know or care about. Were the jokes about rape and pedophilia? Again, not in the context of the jokes - the first people to bring those ideas up, and the idea that this was about the younger daughter, were the Palins. I agree the Palins may have been upset, and had a right to be. Now, they're exploiting the situation and their daughters in the process.

    @textee: "Jon so-called "Stewart" Leibowitz's..."

    "Wow. My first impulse was to delete this, but I kind of think it ought to hang out there where people can see where you're coming from. My second impulse was to ignore it, but I would love to hear your explanation as to why this particular entertainer's having changed this particular name is relevant to you here."

    -

    Thanks for the question. I mention said entertainer's actual name, and it was almost deleted by Time magazine? I particularly enjoy seeing those on the left claim "hate speech" when their actual names are uttered. Maybe you should ask the entertainer why he doesn't use his given name. Is he ashamed of his given name? If I had his given name, I wouldn't be ashamed and afraid of it. I'd be proud of it.

    -

    Also, you say: "I kind of think it ought to hang out there where people can see where you're coming from." Don't know where you think I'm coming from, but I can help you out. I'm not a leftist like said entertainer. We do share one thing in common, however. Neither one of us is funny. Got it?

  • 15

    It's interesting how only 1/3 of the interview covered how $26 BILLION of our money is to be spent to provide a pipe for Alaska, Exxon and other self interest groups while the rest was spent on remarks by an entertainer. This unread, demon hunting, ex-weather girl scares me greatly. Yes, demon hunting. Her church/cult believes that areas of the world and our country are infested with servants of the devil with cities being the largest concentrations. Thus her remarks to rural areas being the TRUE America. Having a religious wingnut in ANY position of power is frightening. She's sure that she's going to heaven - why not push the button. The presidents comment about keeping family out of things was a political agreement and in no way affects the entertainers. Unfortunately for Dave she has a thread of truth about statements pertaining to women as demeaming and carrying on old ways. We've obviously gotten over race; now we need to get over sexism. Religion is still suspect though. For anyone interested I'm male and a dietest like our founding father.

  • 16

    Cover the rape of the American people with silly allegations about humorist who some times aren't very funny. I draws attention away from the real villains who are funneling more money into the very oil company that killed the economy with high cost at the pump.

  • 17

    funny, textee, how you make a point of pointing out that jon stewart's stage name is different than his given one, but you hide behind a screen moniker.

    if there's nothing worse than an anti-semite, it's one who is a coward. and i don't know how you can call stewart a "lefist loser" since he's wildly successful. of course, you probably think it's some jewish global conspiracy. you and james von bunn.

  • 18

    @ textee

    Language is a tricky thing: Letterman's omission of Bristol's name in a joke leads some to believe he is advocating the rape of a 14 year-old girl; meanwhile, your rather awkward inclusion of Jon Stewart's Jewish name leads at least three people to consider the possibility of it being an anti-semitic gesture. And if you don't think you owe the forum an explanation for that one, then, well... nice hypocrisy.

  • 19

    @Andrewstout

    "leads some to believe he is advocating the rape of a 14 year-old girl"

    Except that no one *really* thought that, Palin included.

    @Andrewstout

    "leads some to believe he is advocating the rape of a 14 year-old girl"

    "Except that no one *really* thought that, Palin included."

    -

    FACT: Sarah Palin took her 14 year-old daughter Willow to a game at Yankee Stadium in New York.

    -

    FACT: Leftist loser Letterman then said: "One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game, during the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez."

    -

    FACT: Leftist loser Letterman was promoting and celebrating the rape of a 14 year-old girl because: (1) he's a 74 year-old sick human being and threat to children; and (2) he hates said 14 year-old girl's mother.

  • 21

    @Textee

    You're omitting the FACT that Letterman addressed which daughter he was referring to. And, again, no one in their right mind would have heard that joke and thought "rape" given Bristol Palin and Alex Rodriguez's public images.

  • 22

    @JP - See what happens when you keep posting on the hot-button issues, James? Just a few little Wipeout clips would remedy ourselves of all this hullaballoo.

  • 23

    FYI, textee has been trolling the snot out of Swampland for a long time. The best strategy is to just ignore him.

    Yeah, it was a dumb joke in bad taste, but those are often the best ones. Of course, mothers often have absolutely no sense of humor when it comes to their offspring. They will never stop being outraged and calling for censorship and other nonsense in order to "save the children!"

  • 24

    @charlieromeobravo
    @textee

    I'm with you 100% on that, Charlie—Palin is indulging in false-outrage. I'm just trying to make my point within Textee's own terms so he/she sees how easy it is to undermine one's own sense of righteousness.

    Having said that, alright Textee, you've made your point in three easy-to-follow bullet-points which completely dodge my request. If you recall, I wanted to know why you felt compelled to insert Jon Stewart's Jewish name into the discussion, seemingly out of spite. Your unwillingness to explain why convinces me you had anti-semitic intentions. I'm accepting that as FACT now. Thanks.

    @27rocketpants

    Guess I learned the hard way.

  • 25

    Whether Letterman was referring to the daughter who was not at the game or to the daughter that was at the game, the fact is that Governor Palin has finally gotten something completely right and for the right reasons.

    Letterman has no excuse for referring to any young girl in this manner as part of what he considers a joke. He is a tasteless sad joke for doing so.

    With that said, the sad fact remains that Governor Palin is still a joke herself given the lack of knowledge and insightful intellectual depth reflected in her comments on just about everything else.

    Getting one thing right does not a viable future Presidential Candidate make.
