@dolleyes: despite those movies you stated bombed at the box office, some of those are pretty good despite some minor short comings. Sunshine and Event Horizon were decent.

Virtuality is "I'm a Celebrity in Space" with endless bickering, short on sci fi and long on "virtual" clips of Earth. A bunch of reality show contestants head off into space then spend hours watching virtual images of...Earth. Virtuality breaks absolutely no new ground except in the many ways it annoys. The plot is a mismash of Solaris, Sunshine, Mission to Mars, Event Horizon, Black Hole, Sphere, Supernova and every other "mind frak in space" movie. These movies also bombed at the box office, yet Fox trots them out again, limp and soggy and again failing miserably to gain viewers.

I've never seen a more complex show. There's so much going on it's like walking through a Science Fiction megamall. Influences from the obvious (2001) to the contemporary (Lost, of course) to outside of the genre (the ship feels like the Russian sub from Hunt for Red October more than anything else I've seen).
.
The saddest part, for me, was the last 5 minutes, which could have been about 6 episodes worth of material straightening out all of the twists, but instead rushed through in a montage voice-over.
.
The cast is excellent and their interactions are prickly (maybe explained by the reality show angle?). Ritchie Koster is terrific, like always.
.
Also worth noting the first gay couple that I've seen in Science Fiction. On the other hand, the cast was pretty tilted towards white males (one would think that a reality show with a 5 billion audience might pay a bit more attention to demographics).
.
There's so much left to talk about - the virtual reality, the psychologist/show producer (there's a Mephistophelean combo)... it's an amazing creative glimpse.

Yeah, too bad if Fox doesn't change their minds, the show looks like it could have a lot of potential.

well I watched it and liked it a lot (the slingshot sequence sent me to my happy nerd place), and am of course immediately sad that it wasn't picked up. sigh.

I hadn't heard of it until yesterday. And I hadn't heard the part about it not being picked up. It sounds amazing though and I'll make sure to watch it. I didn't get my soul crushed with Dollhouse so really Fox owes me one.
