Vacation Robo-Poll: Best Sportscaster
My favorite's Bob Costas. I'm not sure he should wear that as a badge of honor, because as I have said often, I don't watch sports. But he always radiates this lively intelligence and curiosity, which makes me think that I'd love to hear him take on topics other than sports. Which he occasionally does, but the man's a sportscaster, so I have to deal with that.
I'm not sure, on the other hand, whether we can still consider Keith Olbermann a sportscaster, but nominate him if you like. Or anyone from the burgeoning wide world of cable-sports-talk shows that I almost completely ignore.
Or, if you're more like me, just nominate your favorite cooking-show host. Could we get Anthony Bourdain and Costas a show together?

Costas is great, but he's more of a studio host, and less of a "sportscaster."

I'd nominate any/all of the following: Keith Jackson (its not college football without Keith Jackson), Cris Collinsworth (one of the best at the NFL), Al Michaels (he still has it, and I'm personally excited because I think he and Collinsworth are now teamed in the NBC Sunday night booth), Vin Scully (the only correct choice on "best baseball sportscaster" -- plus, he works ALONE), and Gus Johnson (always excited by great plays, and someone that CBS should get to work as many NCAA basketball games as possible). -

Harry Caray will always have a special spot in my heart, maybe he wasn't the greatest, but he was always fun to listen to.

ESPN's Mark May. He actually seems to know what he's talking about, doesn't take himself too seriously, and grounds a team than can often devolve into inanity. Of course, my loathing for Lou Holtz probably makes May seem better by comparison, he's still probably the best guy I know by name (I only really watch college football).

I miss the Keith Jackson-Dan Fouts combo, although Jackson is 80 years old, so I don't begrudge him his retirement. I miss Vin Scully since I moved for school and no longer get Dodgers local broadcasts. I don't like the Dodgers (Padres!!!), but Scully is great. Chick Hearn my basketball soundtrack when I was young, the voice in my head as I shot baskets in the driveway. He will always be my favorite sportscaster.
As for my favorite current national sportscasters:
Baseball: I like Jon Miller, but I hate Steve Phillips, so Sunday Night Baseball is less fun this year.
Basketball: Jeff Van Gundy
Football: Dan Fouts
Sportscenter Anchor: Jay Harris (too many try too hard to be funny. Harris doesn't.)
Sideline Reporter: Of course, Erin Andrews. -
