Actually what bugs me the most about the whole Sanford story, is how not a single journalist has asked the Sanford about his dereliction of duty for a week and who exactly was in charge of SC state govt during the days he was gone incommunicado.

I've been going back and forth in my mind on the Sanford thing. Although I'm pretty irritated by the hypocrisy of a publicly-judgmental family values guy committing adultery, I do tend to find Sanford a LOT more sympathetic than most other politicians caught in similarly compromising positions. He appears to really be in love with this woman in Argentina - it doesn't sound like it was a casual sexual relationship with whatever willing skank (or boytoy) was handy. I'd give him even more of a pass if he actually pursued that relationship, rather than stay in an unsatisfying marriage just to get back on the family values bandwagon.

The pandering to get interviews thing seems (to me anyway) to parallel the recent discussion about bloggers getting paid to endorse products - with the big question being: to what extent can journalistic integrity survive in the context of orchestrated friendliness at the outset of reporting? I don't have a decent answer in either context, but I think its an important question - especially considering the growing need for journalists/bloggers to find reliable sources of revenue.
