The Morning After: They Are Coming

Last week, I gave you my thoughts on the excellent miniseries Torchwood: Children of Earth. Now it's your turn to tell me what you thought of the first night. I'm particularly curious what Torchwood fans thought of it, since (1) I'm not one and (2) I've heard (and written) so much about its appeal to non-fans that I wonder if fans notice much difference from the tone of the series.

Tell me what you think, but no need to repeat it in unison. That gets kind of creepy.

Big Hurrah for Russell T Davies and BBC-A, for putting on an excellent show (T:CoE). Loved it! Brilliant writing, directing and performances, even the production values were refreshingly upgraded. Now that's wassup.

Didn't pay much attention to the beginning as I was busy explaining the background of Torchwood and Dr. Who to my roommate who was watching as well, but I think I caught enough of it.

Full disclosure: I haven't seen Torchwood since dropping it after the first season, with some subsequent episodes sprinkled in.

Not much to say for this first episode, as it was pretty much all set-up for the next four episodes, but it was very good. The characters all seem deeper, more fleshed out and comfortable in their roles. For some reason, I can never get over Gwen's tooth gap, but there is no denying her character has come a long way. I like that her boyfriend (fiance?), Rhys, has broken out of his clueless oaf archetype and is now fully in the loop with her career and actually demonstrates some critical thinking.

I'm a bit behind on canon, but there is another organization as out there as shadowy and badass as Torchwood? Also, can someone tell me where Sato and Owen are?

Never seen a lick of either of the source materials but I liked this a lot. Parts were a little tv-movieish but most of it was creepsters in a good way. The two male leads are existing characters, correct? As a newcomer I was unaware that they were gay so the jokes at the beginning of the episode probably played a little differently with me. The immortality thing was introduced nicely also.

I've never seen Torchwood before, but really liked this. I watched the "what's happened before" special that aired right before, so my mom and husband showed up right as the actual episode was starting and they spent the first half hour asking me questions that I couldn't answer, but once everyone settled in we really enjoyed it. I thought it was a good blend of creepy and interesting and funny, and made me very upset with myself for not having tuned in to this show earlier. It was a lot of setup, but it was done in an effective way - and effectively brought in new viewers without hand-holding or much expository (is that even the right word?) dialogue. I thought it was excellent and I'm very much looking fwd to tonite.

Also, can someone tell me where Sato and Owen are?

    dead (permanently).

As for the show, I was delighted with it. I watched the "pre-show" show that gave us an hour of Torchwood background with growing trepidation, but once "Children of Earth" started, I was hooked.

I especially liked the fact that they shot and killed the guy who was being set up at the "new team member" for the first hour of the show --- the willingness to mess around with the conventional approach to series development is a very good sign....

I consider myself a fan of Torchwood. I've seen all of seasons 1 and 2. I thought COE was a marked improvement over their regular offering. For one thing, Russell T. Davies was able to keep his cheese in the can. Anyone who has seen the Doctor Who (2005 iteration) season 4 finale will know exactly what I'm talking about.

Any idea if this will be available online?

I am watching all 5 hours of this today - just finished ay One and am quite hooked. I have been a Torchwood fan for some time - though not a Who fan since the 80s...

I think that Davies hit the perfect stride with this first hour and I am loving Day Two thus far! Really, quite well-done.
