Happy New Year! And welcome to the Tens, or the Teens, or the Teenies, or whatever the hell we’re going to call them! More important, congratulations on making it through the last decade, which some newsmagazine termed The Decade from Hell.

As you’ll recall, the previous decade began with the dire prediction that a computer bug would cause the Internet and all forms of technology to seize up, returning us to the dark ages. (I remember it well, having been a new TIME staffer, drafted to write a cover story on end-of-millennium burnout.) Fortunately, it turned out to be an overblown concern, and absolutely nothing bad happened for the rest of the decade!

But as we head into the next decade, let’s pause for a moment and look back, with Mr. Leonard Nimoy, at the apprehensive way we began the last one. (“Do not use plastic bags for your toilet!”)

Enjoy the disaster nostalgia, and let’s hope this coming decade is a better one. I’ll see you all on Monday.
