Judging American Idol: The Final 4

This was rock night on American Idol, which meant a visit from Slash, and, in the great tradition of Spinal Tap's Stonehenge, a pre-show stage accident that kept the Final Four from singing a run-through. In addition to the solo performances, each Idol sang a duet—an Idol performance night first—which makes it a little confusing to understand how to score them tonight. Do the duets count for half? Do we ignore them? Should we consider the singers running mates? Or are they dueling against each other? You decide, America.

Predictions: Adam is a whole lotta safe. Going home should be Kris or Danny—based on tonight's performance, probably Danny—but after the judges' inexplicable undermining of Allison, I'm more worried for her.

I'm thrilled with this final four. FINALLY!!! Now I am going to hate to see any of them go, but someone's gotta. I happen to think it should be Danny as well. Even though he was my original pick to win, but since the auditions I have grown to love Adam, Chris and Allison. And I too wish they would leave Allison alone. She rocked it(as usual).

I could not believe that the judges were so hard on Allison - her Cry Baby was the high point of the night for me. I'm still humming it this morning and grumbling that she got screwed over by the judges. All in all, this was definitely Allison and Adam's night - they wiped the floor with Danny and Kris ten different ways. I think Kris is probably going home tonite, but I'm holding out hope for the top 3 upset being Danny not making it. An Adam-Allison-Kris top 3 would be awesome. I think that Kris is more versitile and talented than Danny in general, so I hope this bad night isn't it for him... I really want them to do the hometown thing in Conway, I used to live there.

But this top 4, in general, is pretty awesome. I really enjoyed everything Adam and ALlison, and I thought their duet was fantastic - very smart to have the two of them together, rather than pairing them with Kris and Danny - that would have just been unfair to Kris and Danny

I was altogether unimpressed with the performances and I thought Slash was a complete waste as a mentor, but then I hate the whole mentor part of American Idol.
    .
I wasn't quite as enamored with Adam as the judges obviously were, but compared to everyone else he was phenomenal. Even though he toned it down (just a little) he stayed true to himself and I agree with the judges, this is the type of music he should sing on a album.
    .
Unlike Shara, I didn't think Allison performance of Cry Baby was all that great, but I also think the judges were way off base. Simon was correct when he said later that hers and Adams duet will probably save her. It'll all come down to fan base. Does Allison have the fan base to keep her in the competition. Both Kris and Danny have solid fan bases that could push Allison out the door.
    .
As for the first duet, it was painful to watch. You could just tell that neither Kris nor Danny were thrilled with the whole duet idea and they certainly didn't work well together.
    .
Last season, Carly Smithson (one of my favorite from season 7)sang Come Together on Beatles night and she was fantastic. It's one of the few season 7 songs I still have on my iPod. Danny's version was just too bland and the judges were spot on (for a change) in their assessment of the performance. However, I think Kris will carry forward to the final 3. He has a strong fan base who like his pretty boy looks and soft spoken singing. They may forgive his performance since rock isn't exactly his style.
    .
Oh, Danny boy! What a nightmarish performance. When he started screaming I had to change the channel. A rock theme was sure to trip Danny up since it's even less his style than Kris. This was y far the weakest performance of the night, but Simon is probably right: Danny will be safe. He may end up in the bottom three, but he's probably safe.
    .
I'm really looking forward to the elimination show tonight. At this point in the contestant it comes down to fan base. Kris and Danny have strong fan bases. Adam is popular with the judges but I don't think his fan base is as strong as the other two. Allison is probably the weakest of four in this area, but her great duet with Adam may help keep her in the competition.

Another great performance from Adam. He never fails to amaze and entertain. Loved, loved, loved him. I thought Allison did well. I loved the song choice for her. She has never been my favorite, but tonight was her best performance for me. She and Adam were great together as I knew they would be. It was their night for sure. They are all such talented performers and singers but, it was just a mess for Danny, and Kris wasn't much better. I personally think Adam should win the whole thing. What talent he has!!

i cannot believe allison got the boot! i thought she was great. not the best song for her, but joplin is so the right vibe. people gave danny a pass, i think. that note...was note-orious.

shara: the reason why the judges were not so impressed by Allison's performance is because she performed after Adam and we all can agree that Adam was the best in the rock genre. Probably if Adam performed last, the others' performances could've been more appreciated.

jdt67: I agree that overall, that night was a failure. And Slash did not make it any better.

Well my take on this would be, it's either Kris or Allison who'll be voted off but I still think it should be Danny who should go after that SCREAM.
